Paid GM zerg coaching

*******UPDATE*******: (havent changed original post at all, just adding!)

So the 10th (11th ) is upon us
I will now be doing coaching with a charge. As below, I charge $25p/h, or $80 if you buy 4 lessons in advance. I use paypal, or you can buy these from me @ any sydney LAN which I will be attending!

A further update on what I will be offering, and how I will be structuring my coaching lesson/s, so you dont need to just buy my lessons and hope they will be good!

When you contact me to buy coaching, I will send you a short Q&A (Should take 5-10 min, no more). This will give you a run-down of some of the things we will go through, but most importantly will set your expectations for what you will be receiving in my lessons (I can send you this before you pay, if you would like). It will ask whether you are after regular (weekly/fortnightly) coaching, in which case we can focus on 1-2 things at a time, in good depth, or whether you would be looking to just get a few coaching sessions (2-3 total) to get a broad understanding of where to improve and a general point in the right direction.

I have put alot of hard work & time into improving this, and to structuring lessons to meet students specific needs - so every lesson will be structured for you, it will not be a generic "xyz do this".

I also give the option of whether you have a specific thing you would like to improve on, or perhaps if you are a bit lost, I can simply watch some replays and provide pointers that I think are the most important (and again, I can give lots of very brief pointers, or go in-depth about 1 or 2 things depending on what you are after!)

If after all this, you are still not sure whether you want coaching (or just mine) I am offering to do a 10-15 minute "consultation" - basically this means I will watch a replay of yours (this can be done on skype or not, it is up to you ) and provide you with some information on what I think you need to improve on, and how I will help you improve on those things!
Note: this is NOT coaching, but rather a quick consultation of how & what I could coach you on, only if you are unsure of whether or not coaching is for you! This is obviously obligation free

-----

Hi guys!

So, as I have always said, the time has finally come!

Starting from the 17/02/2012 any lesson I do will be paid for. I did a free trial which has lasted the last 4 or so weeks, and have done about 10-15 hours of free coaching, i have learnt alot both about the game and especially about coaching in that short space of time.

If you book in before 10/02/2012 you can still get 1 more lesson for free, existing students will be given preference, and I will do 3-5 hours per week at a maximum of coaching (I also work full time, so time is scarce).

I will -not- be a fulltime TGM coach yet, but will certainly be, for now, a "trial TGM coach" with the possibility of becoming a full fledged TGM coach. This is basically pending student review & certain other criteria.

My coaching will be $25 per hour, and if you buy 4 lessons at a time, $80 (or $20/lesson).
What will you get for this? I will analyse between 2 and 3 replays in an hours session; I will -not- simply tell you that "you should make XYZ now", because this is less than not helpful. What I -will- do is ensure your understanding of the game improves, -why- you are able to make drones, or not make drones right now. As a wise man once said, "If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, if you teach him to fish you feed him for a lifetime".

Why would I be any good at doing this, having so little experience?

For the past 2 yr's ive worked in a sales call centre in sydney (no im not the annoying person that calls you and tries to sell you stuff ) selling health insurance. Basically, people call me, they want health insurance, I explain it and sell it to them. Health insurance really is one of the more complex things you can try and look into, and so being able to explain it in detail without confusing someone with limited knowledge of it is obviously going to transfer some skills across to explaining a detailed Starcraft 2 concept without confusing a student. I feel (and have seen/heard) that -alot- of SC2 pro's simply dont have this ability, so even if you are paying $50 an hour (or $300 to idra ) it doesnt necessarily mean they will be able to transfer their understanding of the game to you in any helpful way. As I said before, I will never say "you should be doing XYZ right now because thats just how it is".

What else do you get? Inbetween lessons you can hit me up on skype / SC2 ingame and ask a few questions here & there and I will almost always help you out, unless I am in a game at the time. I am talking small stuff though, things like "What would counter 10 thor's", "how can i better deal with drops" Anything more complicated would best be suited to a dedicated coaching session. I will not let this be abused - if you are asking me 30 questions between coaching lessons, i -will- stop answering, as I feel this would be abusive. Anything within reason

If you have questions/concerns, or want to make sure you would indeed be getting good value for your money, PM me and I can answer some questions before you buy any sessions!

Previous coaching sessions I have done on stream: (These were among my first ever coaching sessions, I will have improved since these, and will continue to improve).

http://www.twitch.tv/eldridtv/b/305057392 - I give macro/transitioning/engagement & unit composition analysis on a macro ZvT, from 11:00-45:00 in the video timer with a platinum zerg player.

http://www.twitch.tv/eldridtv/b/305057392 Scouting & reaction help vs a 4gate ZvP with platinum zerg player. Time in video is from 45:10 - 1:02:00 (2 games, second game is me playing with some helpful tips and tricks).

http://www.twitch.tv/eldridtv/b/305057392 - Full analysis on a longer (and crazy at times) ZvZ. Time in video 1:12:00 - 1:47:35 *warning* not a standard ZvZ the whole way through, but I do pause for long intervals and talk about ZvZ, sometimes just generalizing, and WHY I dont feel like it's a coinflip matchup (like so many people do, including myself from 3-6 months ago!)

---
If your interested, PM me to arrange payment & scheduling of lessons!

Cya ingame guys

Doesn't PiG do it for 20/25 $$ an hour? Not trying to put shit on you as a player or a coach but I think starting a little lower, like PiG did (I think) would be a better idea. good luck with it though

PiG charges $25/hour. I think he started at $15.

Would be keen since I want to pick up zerg as my new race. Protoss is getting boring :P
But 25 dollars per hour is a bit too steep for me right at the start, so will have to consider this.

Good luck though!!

Hey man, i've thought long and hard on my pricing, and knew that everyone would compare me to pig when i started charging. Like i said in my post, I think i will be better than him in some ways, and he better than me in others, and ultimately this will even out. Thus the similiar charging.

Also, $15 an hour doesnt buy you any kind of coaching in Australia I dont think top level GM coaches should ever charge those rates, it's redic!

But thanks for the feedback - ultimately, if -everyone- says "yes i'd use you, but not for the same price as pig", i may reduce my price. I dont really agree with the notion that rank = how good the coach will be. It just isnt as relevant as people think. Artosis is worse or similiar in skill to me, but he gets like 7,000 viewers on his stream just for analysing his replays. This is not for his mechanics, but for his deep understanding of the game and ability to make complex things simple

Sorry to wall of text you :P

Hey Trinion, ill happily coach you of course when your ready, I would definitely recommend you playing the race for at least 2~ months minimum to get a good feel for the race, as at the very start coaching wont help you as much as if it was your main race!

Wasn't trying to compare the rank to coaching ability or anything. All I was trying to say is that I know how good a coach PiG is, he is SUPER organised for EVERY student, has page's of stuff written out on word so he doesn't stuff anything up. He also (I think) has been doing it for quite a lot longer then you (please correct me if I'm wrong)

like I said, good luck . I'd love if there were some competition for PiG. Maybe competitive prices will allow me to afford some coaching once in a while

You aren't just comparing yourself to some random high ranked GM, PiG is a really good player AND he is a much more experienced coach, which is why going from free to a price equal to a pig within 4 weeks is really a bit much

Please, let Eldrid fix his own prices and don't make bad publicity to him. If people prefer go to PiG they will and if PiG has too many students because he's better, then he will rise his prices ultimately and poorer people will go to Eldrid. That's just supply and demand balance law.

There is no shame in wanting to live from SC2 if you're good enough to have clients. In the end of the day, the customer is always right and the balance will determine what is the correct price for each of them.

Don't know what's with all the negativity. Eldrid's a top bloke and always bending over backwards to help others, including giving out a ton of free coaching lately. Skill does not translate directly into coaching ability (the old Michael Jordan had a coach), so for all we know Pig could be a great coach, and Elrid may be even better.

The market and prices will sort itself out, if you don't personally think its worth it that's fine, but just because it's the same price as someone else doesn't make it bad value in any way. No reason to be so negative over it all.

Gl eldrid, hope it goes well for you

When was last time you coached someone ? Or helped a player in the forum or participated in a strategic discussion ? Or added valuable content for us ? Being a awesome player is good, but you should increase the help and decrease the trolling that would be better, mate.

Linden (Eldrid) is a really nice guy who I know personally from a bunch of LANs and even gave coaching to myself once quite a while back. He is blooming into a very high ranked player and as long as he keeps pursuing improvement for his students he will be a great coach.

Celldweller is really smart with that comment. Competition does indeed create quality and I'll be watching some of eldrid's coaching and hoping to learn some ways to improve coaching myself .

A note about why I started so low, and why I took so long to steadily increase my prices. I have very low living costs and was so keen to improve my services and actually intice people into getting coaching that I put in massive amounts of extra time, bonus offers and some free coaching before I even started charging. I could afford to live off very little and was doing coaching full-time when I started. Linden has full-time work and does this as a night-job. Hence he does not need to attract as many students as I did originally.

Also people claimed there was no market for sc2 coaching in SEA when I started. Nirvana's TGM manual was brand-new, the tournament scene here was just really getting off the ground and there weren't enough casted events to keep people entirely engrossed in the SEA scene. By offering such low prices and giving the absolute best service I feel I, along with the increased scene activity helped build this market. Now Linden is starting down a similar path but in a market that is much more developed. He also happens to be coming in at a time where I am devoting most of my time to training and so welcome him taking some of the coaching load. He knows there is an established market here and so doesn't need to work for so little money. Does that mean his coaching is worse then mine as he didn't scrap his way up? Nope. Eldrid outlined above very much WHY he already has a whole skillset that is entirely transferrable to sc2 coaching and showed that he wants to increase the students understanding, not just drill them. Eldrid spent 15+ hours of free coaching in a very focused manner improving his demeanor and ability to communicate sc2 knowledge. He is going about this the right way and if he gets as many students as he wants then that's great. If he can't find enough, maybe he lowers his prices or offers more incentives, or streams more to get publicity. Who knows? All I can say is his heart seems to be in the right place and he seems like a genuinely nice dude (who sucks at 2v2 :P).

Good luck to Eldrid! He clearly cares about the game and the service he delivers so he should do well.

Price to me seems fair and if I played Zerg (and therefore no longer needed coaching from YaMaMa :P) I would totally support Eldrid by getting some lessons. I mean, if you are someone who (like me) thinks "I can invest this money, and as a result I will be a better player", I really don't see how whether it's $15 or $25 makes much difference.

Don't take this as me saying "It's only 10 bucks" - I'm a poor uni student! I don't have $10 to throw away. I just think that you can't really quantify the improvement you will make as a result of coaching and trying to do so probably means you have uncertain/unrealistic expectations. As someone with a history of paying for coaching, it's not all about the teacher. Mostly, it comes down to the student and how they work to internalise what the coach is saying outside the lesson. Next, it is the relationship between the student and coach - if you can't stand to listen to the guy for an hour on Skype, or their teaching method doesn't sync with your learning method, then you've picked the wrong coach. Coaches have a professional responsibility to make sure they are putting in 100% effort to the coaching session (which means preparation outside the lesson also) but frankly, you don't just buy a promotion for $15/$20/$25.

Regarding the complaints about pricing, Eldrid; have you considered bulk discount pricing? It's very common for coaches to offer 3-4 lesson packages for a bit cheaper, e.g. $25/lesson or 4 lessons @ $20/lesson. Personally, I love these package deals. I recommend talking to some other coaches and find out how many of their lessons are one-off vs packages, and what they prefer to book.

I just want to add that this thread is allowed because Eldrid is under trial to become an official TGM coach, he is not as known as the rest of us for now but that should change in the near future He has been giving out lots of helpful free coaching and advice and he has asked me first before posting this.

Other paid coaching threads are not allowed on our site as that constitutes self advertising, the same reason why it is banned on TL and coaches have to pay TL's sponsored threads to to advertise themselves as thats basically what it is - an advertisement.

Free coaching threads like Bard's Protoss Coaching however, are welcomed and strongly encouraged

Hey breadfan, well said and great point about the bulk buying discount of lessons. I will do this and update the OP with this info! Thanks

Added this to OP as well!

This is obviously obligation free [/B]
