State of Origin
StarCraft II Australia

Hi guys. While there's not too much going on before the upcoming SEASL I thought I'd gather interest for the State of Origin tournament for Australian SC2 players that I want to host some time in the future. I'd be interested in finding out who wants to play and also getting ideas/thoughts on the format and teams. If you're on the fence about whether you think you'd like to play either in the A-Team or try out for a position in the B-Teams, ask some of the familiar faces who played in the original BW-based SoO and they will likely convince you, as it was a fun event enjoyed by all!

What is SoO?

The State of Origin is a two-tier, team-based league competition on the SEA server for Australian residents. The five teams are based on the states of Australia. The rivalries between the states of Australia are some of the most competitive rivalries in sport. Each year the highlight of the sports calendar down under features State vs State competitions across various codes of football, and the StarCraft II State of Origin competition seeks to bring this same competitive rivalry to the online arena. Continuing on from the popular first SoO series in StarCraft: Brood War the competition will see defending champions Queensland[1] take on season 1 finalists New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia. Continuing the traditions of previous seasons, there will be a B-Team competition run parallel.

The matches will be best of 5 (First to win 3), "ProLeague" format with an ace match. The lineups are submitted confidentially by team captains and the full lineups are published before the match day. Each of the four state teams plays each other once in the round robin phase, before qualifying for an elimination playoff. The B-Team competition will follow the same format with the exception of the playoffs - the B-Team competition winner will be determined purely by ladder standings.

Who will play?

As mentioned, the plan is to represent five teams based on the main Australian states with a SC2 playing population. At this point, the teams will look like this:

The A-Teams will be mostly invite only unless a situation arises in which several players may be worthy of making the team but didn't. B-Teams will be part invite (a captain) and then the recruitment will be left up to that captain to either hand pick or host a tournament to recruit players.

Current A-Team rosters aren't finalised, but there are several players who come to mind when discussing the teams. The following players, for example, seem like obvious choices for their respective state teams:

QLD - SenSei, mOOnGLaDe, Jimdiddy, Azz, TargA
NSW - tgun, MaFia, Rossi, iaguz, YoonYJ, Ninja, PiG, Pokerface, Light
VIC - deth, Pinder, techtron
SA - EdgE, Satu, Bielsko
WA - yang, ChoBo, tbk

Is there a prize?

I will likely put in around $150 of my own money as well as add the $150 won by Team Australia way back in the second SC2SEA NationWars up for the winning A-Team to make a total of $300. Other donators are free to offer prizes for the A- or B-Teams if you contact me.

Why can't SEA/NZ nations play?

As much as I like to include our neighbours, the history and whole idea behind this event is focused on Australian state rivalries and including even a team like New Zealand takes away from that appeal. In addition, it would be unfair for a country to compete against a state, and for another country to win Australia's NW prizemoney from them!

NSW seems to have a lot more depth than the others

This is a minor problem, though the format means that only 4-5 players will be used in each round. This means the full weight of the NSW lineup can't be brought to bear each week and it will limit their depth advantage. Any other suggestions or ideas to even the playing field are welcome!

Note - you may only represent a state team in which you currently reside!

Haha likely the players and I will do most of the organising stuff but I will keep an eye open and see if any help will be needed. It ran quite smooth in BW with just the captain to submit lineups but in SC2 the teams will be bigger so...

Is it actually possible to lose to easy AI? I've seen a video DJWheat did teaching his 5 year old son Starcraft 2, and he still managed to absolutely dominate the easy AI.

Mate I am not doubting that Mayo if he trained hard enough could be competitive with an Easy AI, but the thing is the AI is gonna turn up every week rain, hail or shine. He is dependable and the cornerstone of a successful team - almost like a morale-boosting mascot.

Nah it's cos I made this list ages ago and that was when Ray wasn't playing haha. The old list includes a few people who have dropped off so that is why I wanted to post a thread to get it up to date!

Some of my thoughts:

NSW might need 2 teams so all players have a chance to play? PiG captains one and Mafia captains the other with the xeria boys. So you got an even 6 teams now.

Might work better as a tournament format rather than league, as there are so many events going on, playing every week might be too much of a commitment for some of the top players and you want these players to be playing in this league!

Also guys I think I linked it in the OP but definitely check out all the old threads on teamliquid to read about the history of State of Origin in SC:BW. You will see a lot of familiar names there and that is the competition that actually founded TA (we started as the NSW B-Team after SoO was over to keep up activity!). We had a showmatch with the "state all-stars" where we had 5 players from the two finalist teams play a match against Evil Geniuses (Team EG) which saw Australian win 4-1!

You bring up a good point! I'd love to have a PD and BSG SoO event running as well but that would be a lot of effort for me alone and I wouldn't want to take admins away from other international or SC2SEA events. If you wanted to organise your own I'd be happy to help you out though!

And yeah pinder B-Teams are going to be really interesting though. I think we will see a lot of players who made a name for themselves in Tiers 2 and 3 in SEACL so it should be pretty even. Most should be fielding GMs.

Ace player can be revived, or a completely different player. 2v2 is a definite possibility to even the playing field I wish 2v2 in SC2 wasn't such a joke though. If it was anything like BW 2v2 it'd be in for sure!

Not sure I agree with there being 2 NSW teams. I mean QLD will still win anyway (Proof), but perhaps limit the number of players per team to ensure team fairness?

Sounds like a brilliant idea, however I disagree with the 'no SEA or NZ' teams. I think that, as members of the SC2SEA community they have a right to bring forth a team and fight against the other locations in our community, right? I mean, State of Origin is only QLD/NSW, yet the other states are included.

I think it is a valid discussion point that all areas of SEA should be able to field a team, if they choose to. Of course, this is just my opinion, but I think it further supports our community as a whole, and brings our community closer, rather than singling out certain groups and saying they can't compete.

while it is true, nothing can really compare to the rivalry between states. It is present in almost every single thing regarding the nation, also when I heard about the first soO back in broodwar is was a great idea, so I think it is good to stick back to the roots of the first competition

We've had those competitions, they're called nation wars. This is state of origins.

For one, Nation Wars didn't include states, so it's a totally different thing. We can have states competing against everyone, as opposed to a boring Australian only competition that we so frequently see. It would be great, in my opinion to try and link up a tournament between all of the states as well as people from other countries so that they can represent themselves and fight for their geographical location's respect on our forum.

Again, I'm going to say, this is not just an Australian forum. I'm from QLD, but I'd love to see the talent of our community who reside in NZ, or Singapore etc. compete against people from my state. I am of the opinion that if you want to further esports in our community, you cannot just prevent certain people from playing because of their geographical location. It makes absolutely no difference as to whether or not they are in Australia. There WILL be an army of people supporting them just as much as there would be people supporting QLD or NSW. The whole point is to have a competitive scene in which people represent their place of origin in Starcraft 2. It's not rocket science to say that everyone on our forum should be able to partake in the tournament.

All in all, it is deL's choice as to whether or not other places are included, but these are just words for thought.

State of Origin is inherently an Australian-based competition. That's been the case for Day of Defeat, Counter-Strike (1.6/Source), Call of Duty (1, 2, 4, 5, MW2, Black Ops) and the Battlefield series.

Why are you under this delusion that holding one geographical based competition that coincides with - SURPRISE, THE ACTUAL STATE OF ORIGIN - somehow is a hindrance to eSports in our community?

It's these kind of events that tie in competitive gaming with the rest of what goes on with society that makes eSports more awesome. What do you think Barcraft is? This is a novelty event - if you try to be all politically correct by not wanting to piss anyone else off (not that they would be, this is an Australian tradition for ****'s sake) you're just going to ruin the event for everyone.

Also, while i don't want to sound as blunt as dippa did just then... I do agree with his point. State of Origin is an Australian competition, and while I'd be loath to refuse anyone entry to anything else based on their nationality, it kinda takes away from the rivalry a bit. Mainly because if we have a State of Origin (nations) version, it would end up with Australia v New Zealand anyway and would defeat the purpose of doing a SoO at all.

Lol, wanna ******* relax mate? I said it was my opinion. Everyone is entitled to their own. I said that I was PERSONALLY of the opinion that it would be better for our community if everyone was entitled to have a go. I haven't been a part of any other online gaming communities so I didn't know that it was like that. I never said a hindrance, I said it would be better for our community if we included everyone and it would help to further esports by inviting everyone to compete if they so choose. It held huge importance for the players and a win was considered the ultimate bragging rights.

If I recall correctly, the big names at the time included players such as Spud, Pinder, Frugga, Etude,EdgE, GoD, Sensei, and even Glade. The SoO was such a massive event that it even forced international superstars such as Legionnaire out of retirement/inactivity. The whole Aus community at the time would view these games, with each individual having own their equal share of pride on the line.

Changing the rules of this event and the manner in which it will be played would be a huge slap in the face to the "old-school" players within SC2 who are, unbeknownst to many, the roots of Australian StarCraft.

With deL running these events again, I'm sure the tradition behind this event will be respected and most importantly, be enjoyed to the fullest extent!

I'm pretty sure in BW it was just what state you were in at that time, but I think that was just because it was hard to fill numbers in certain areas and it just made it easier.

As mentioned this won't be opened to international teams because of historical and thematic reasons, but likewise it's not going to be a regular event. It's a bit of a one-off or special event and not a long series so the SEA and NZ guys aren't missing out on too much. They could even be inspired to start their own - I know Malaysia and Singapore have a bit of a rivalry I am sure there's something there that could be started!

Oh yeah that's something I forgot to mention - if your state isn't represented because of a lack of competitiveness I will allow you to join the B-Team and I am sure there's room in the BSG / PD teams! There's a bit of extra room to add a team or two in the B-Team competition because there's no playoffs.

I would like to do a double round robin but I don't want it to go on too long. If we keep the playoffs, which are the exciting part and will likely involve all teams, limiting it to playing each other once is probably preferred. Will see when I get a schedule though

And regarding format we probably could go to 6 x Bo3 but to limit the huge advantage teams like NSW or even QLD will show by having such a deep lineup we will probably keep 4 games + ace. This keeps all of the teams within reach of either the minor or major title!

I think a change of name should be in order... the state of origin is originally between two states fighting over who had the game first.... Footy had State of Origin for years, the only reason it stopped was because they made the V.F.L the A.F.L and it wasn't needed anymore. SoO still exists at a school level for major states so I don't get why everyone is saying that it is exclusively Qld/NSW.

Also I dont get where all these random facts are coming from, because most of them are so wrong its not funny. SoO is predominately used to determine who the better players are in each state in order to create a team for national events. Its why it still exists at a school level and is one of the major drafting tools the A.F.L uses.

This is a STATE of Origin. So this is a battle of the states. Territories are not states, so without excluding people from the ACT being allowed to compete based on the fact that ACT is not a state, they are allowed to be fielded in the NSW team, because the ACT is actually enclaved in NSW.

So, actually, it's not unfair at all. If the NSW captain decides on a strong team that doesn't include any ACT players, well, you probably aren't the strongest players in all of the NSW region. The B-teams are created for this reason.

I don't see the need for all this drama when there is something really cool and fun being organised for you.

Considering the number of requests for an ACT team, if YoonYJ wants to play for ACT rather than NSW they can have their own team as he guarantees it will be competitive enough. You won't be combined with TAS though, they will likely just be a B-Team. ACT can also have a B-Team if they want but it's not compulsory.

Playoffs will be bottom 4 play in preliminary finals, then those winners take on the top 2 in the semi-finals.

Rather than risk clashing with the next round of SEACL, we will be starting the SoO around late May or June. This clashes for some A-Team players with xGTL so the best option for us is on weekends - how does that work out for everyone? For B-teams and BSG/PD it's a little more flexible but I will leave that up to the organisers of those events.

We're having a lot of different competitions these days, so there will be more and more clashing. I think organizers will just have to make their competitions on different weekdays.

Yeah but specifically SEACL it is of a similar format and will be similar teams/players playing as it goes from top tier down to BSG. Where there's just a slight clash with one section of people that is usually acceptable because it gives the depth of the lineups a bit of a working over
