i would like some advice from you guys! i read a lot on people trying to switch race and stuff.. even i myself have such moments thus i am now a toss..
i dunno how many of you know my "past" in sc2 but i was a terran for 8 mths (since the launch) and am stuck in gold and never get to see that silver gilter of plat.. every since i switch to toss, in 4 days i got to plat.. kinda lost momentum in the 1 mth and drop to gold.. now i am still team even with plats in ladder so it's not so bad..
my point is.. knowing that you love a race but can't play well in it... would you go to that race?
a good example to use would be zerg.. knowing u cannot multi-task (lava-injects, spread creeps, and most impt scouting) well at all but u like zerg's play style would u still want to play zerg?
cos for my case, i know i am bad at positioning which it's hard to coach as it's based on situtation and personal awareness.. marine splitting requried awareness and reaction time.. which i dun have.. but i like terran.. sigh..
can anyone advice? i really want to be a diamond in S3 (really badly =D) at least i am realistic with my goals.. haha
If you like a certain race, and have FUN playing it even if you are not the best I'd say stick with it. But if you are playing to get high up in the ranks then play what you have to, to achieve that.
Haha, this is the third time I've posted something about this topic, but I don't mind, I always love adding my two cents, haha :]
Play whichever race you have the most fun with, is my own personal opinion. If you are playing the race you have the most fun with, then learning how to overcome your problems and improve should not be a problem and be part of the overall fun you're having while playing P/T/Z.
Don't worry yourself with which icon is sitting next to your name or how many points you've obtained/lost... focus on improving as a player and the promotions, ladder points and tournament wins will all flow accordingly. Because at the end of the day, in SCII; losing = improving = winning = promotion.
But yeah, to wind up yet another ramble of mine; play whichever race you have the most fun with and learn how to excel using that race. GL&HF with whichever decision you make :]
Skybreaker i read your comments twice.. lol was thinking maybe you might give a diffrent opinion on my case.. lol.. well loks like i ma play terran for a bit den.. ^^
I think that people, especially in lower leagues, put too much emphasis on race. Mix it up every so often, sometimes it will even help your play in other races. For example, I never saw the value of mutas, I would never use them, but playing as toss for a month showed me how paranoid players become when they see a spire, I took to putting up cannons and making so many stalkers just to stop what in the end never came. So just play for whats fun and mixing it up every so often can give you that edge with your game.
Oh by the way, Zerg is the best race so choose them. XD

I going to play between toss and terran and find my world in them.. lol really badly want my shiny gilttering diamond but oso love for the race i play..
*so sick of people telling me toss is imba.. just 4gate every game and u will get diamond* <--- SO DAMN NOT TRUE!

I'm a Terran player and here're my general opinions about the races.

I 3rax pushed my way to diamond when the game just launched. <-- True
Til now I'm still stuck at diamond.
I suggest playing one race first; if you enjoy terran mechanics and micro, play terran. Make sure you understand your build inside out; start with figuring out what (macro) opener to use with each matchup. Play only one style for each matchup (e.g. MMM, marinetank, hellionthor, marinebanshee) for a while, you'd have more success compared to continuously switching styles. You only need to worry playing multiple styles when you're a pro and you become predictable to everyone.

Hi spearhead, thanks your your reply!
my point is that i can't do well in tank positioning and micro marine (these cannot be coach as it's situational) knowing that you can't do these would u still go into terran?
cos it would not be playing the race to it's full potential..
As mention before in regards to Zerg's mechanics... if one love to play Zerg but he cannot multi-task at all.. spreading creep inject larva.. scouting or even map awareness which IMO not all bronze zerg players can keep that up.. is it adviceable to keep playing Zerg and hoping u can climb to GM?
Of course those things can be learned/taught. Most of it is not as situational as you seem to think it is.
Yes, it's not going to be 100% identical in all situations, but you will always be stutter stepping your marines towards the nearest choke that will stop the zerglings from getting a surround, or always parking your tanks next to objects that will stop the zerglings from surrounding them (preferably having to run a long way round to hit the tanks).
Or just spreading your marines into a nice long line so they will concave well and not just be a big ball when you are stimming in to snipe tanks.
There was a guy who Learnt a 2rax marine/scv all in and though he was gold or something as Protoss he got his account to quite high masters and beat some gm's too... (NA I believe)
This will not make you "better" long term but it will make your symbol shinier ;p
Disclaimer: good players will hold this 100% of the time as ppl are now very aware of this build.
- If I'm really frustrated with my race and don't feel I can progress with it, try switching for a short time. NA 1v1, or team games are good for this while preserving your SEA 1v1 rank (if you're worried about it.
- Trying different races might help you understand your preferred race better. E.g. I switched from P to T for a few weeks (on NA 1v1) and T build orders (because of the SCV build times) really helped me to understand early BO and macro relationships a lot better. It seems obvious know for my P play, but I just didn't 'get' some stuff before.
- If you think you know the problem with your race, spend some training time just focusing on that. E.g. I barely used sentries as P because I just couldn't get FF down. P without FF's really struggle, so I spent a week or 2 doing the sentry/HT challenge a couple of times every day, and I starting doing sentry defensive openings. Now I'm pretty good with FF's and sentries.
- Remember that the greatest of players are only human. Chances are that there are tricks or shortcuts to do things you might struggle with. E.g. as P I felt I couldn't spend the time to focus back on a pylon to reinforce a push, so I rarely build units during a push. To solve this I started to use location hotkeys (F2, etc.) to flick back to a forward pylon, quickly warp in units, add them to a control group, and rally them, then flick back to the main push. Much quicker than what I was doing before, and a nice trick (as I suck clicking on the mini-map.
Having said all of this.....REMEMBER:
The more time you spend on your race, the more you innately learn it's hotkeys, tricks, counters and other stuff that you will no longer need to spend brainpower on later. So breaks are good to appreciate other things, but the majority of time is better spent sticking to one thing.

y'all for reading this
it depends what you want out of the game. Say you were a pro player trying to make a living off the game, you'd obviously pick the race you feel you have the best chance of winning with. But for most of us mere mortals, it's better to just pick the race that you have more fun playing. Either way you're gonna lose roughly half of your games anyway (unless you're high GM or bottom of bronze), so it's more about what you enjoy. After all, starcraft is just a game
WOW thank your for all the advices! lol it realli motivates me to drop toss and go back terran with no regrets~! xD
Well is sad to see u going back to Terran again
IMHO .. u cant really blame on Protoss being not the right race for you. Its about practice, practice, practice in the end, you will be familiarize with Protoss in due time.
No offence, if u move to Terran without practice, it will remains the same as using Protoss previously.

Of course he can't blame them. I don't blame coriander for tasting like shit to me, but it's my opinion and taste. Protoss seems to just not be his taste. Terran is what he likes, then Terran is what he should practice.
How is supposed to practice Terran without "moving" to them? I don't understand. Let him play what he wants lol.
LOL SIZE! no worries... i got so much scoldings yesterday.. T.T u will see me concentrating one that one race and u will see what soon ^^ no worries.. i am here if u still wanna practice with me xD
I think the biggest difference between Protoss and Terran is that with Terran, you have to actively pressure your opponent the ENTIRE game. You have to be the one making the first moves, as if you leave any race alone for awhile, they will just easily outproduce you with their superior production capabilities until you have no units left.
