So I'm sitting there at the back of the room completely flipping out in my head. I keep looking at the time on the computer as it ticks by. It's almost 8.45pm and we aren't finished yet. You have got to be kidding me - this is about to happen.
Barcrafts have been popping up throughout the world over the last year, with the one year birthday occurring only recently. Simon, or TheSneak to many of you, and myself thought it was time we brought Barcraft to this little old town of Adelaide in South Australia.
What originally started out as a few mates from SASL looking at the feasibility of hosting a watch party of ~10 at a house quickly escalated to the interest of an entire Adelaide community. When TheSneak reached out to this community (http://www.sc2sea.com/showthread.php?t=4156), I had all the proof I needed to know an Adelaide Barcraft had potential for big things.
After visiting countless venues, sending so many emails and experiencing my fair share of managers utterly confused about what I was on about and what I was asking of them, I landed at The Metropolitan and never looked back. Besides a few hiccups here and there with the internet, the venue space looked almost perfect and was within Simon and my budget.
Arrival
So it's 6PM and I have just arrived at the venue after driving up from soccer, unfortunately missing the first game. I turn the corner and enter the door and am blown away by how many people are there. Initially I thought close to 70 people but it turns out we had almost 100 there! Hey that’s pretty gosu for Adelaide! I make my way up to the back of the room to see how Simon is doing and instantly I’m taken in by the atmosphere. "Let's hope it's a good set mate." I say to Simon.. boy were we in for a treat.
Games 2-4
So Game 2 and 3 get taken pretty convincingly by MVP and I’m a little concerned we might have a 4-0 and be done within an hour. Simon and I make the announcement that in the case this is a whitewash we’ll try get some MLG footage going. Turns out that definitely wasn’t required! When Squirtle took Game 4 I was really happy and I would have been content with a 4-1 win to MVP – after all MVP was playing exceptionally well.
I’m not going to go into detail about the match – every man and his dog has either watched it or heard about it but I did manage to catch some video footage from my phone. Unfortunately I was not able to source a video recorder for the night and my phone couldn’t handle 100 nerds orgasming but check out the footage below of the vortex!
After MVP taps out I look around the room and take in all the different facial expressions. Some people are shocked, some are ecstatic, others look like they have just popped some pills and are tripping balls.. me? I was just over the moon that I got to share this moment with 100 others.
Game 6
I look at the time. 8PM. I turn to Simon and we both are thinking the same thing. MVP has to take this game otherwise we’re in a lot of trouble as getting 2 games in 30 minutes is extremely unlikely. Why was 8.30PM such an important time you ask?
We had an agreement with The Metropolitan that we would be out by 8.30PM as a result of multiple bands coming in from 9PM for entertainment - a regular occurrence at The Metropolitan. Doing my calculations when booking the space I knew it would be tight and anything more than a 4-2 score line would be pushing our boundaries.
So it’s Game 6 and I’m loving the tank play from MVP again. The amount of cat and mouse games being played is ridiculous! Then my heart skips a beat.. or eight. To my horror the stream stops moving – it’s frozen. You have got to be kidding me. What could be the final engagement of the GSL and our internet has gone down?! Let me tell you all, I have never been more relieved to see “Waiting for Server” to appear in my ENTIRE LIFE because at that point Simon and I knew it wasn’t on our end.
So in the back of my head with every engagement I am pleading for MVP to take it out. We can’t afford another game, we have to be out in 5 minutes. Then he taps out as 8.30PM ticks over on the laptop clock. Oh god PANIC STATIONS!
Game 7 - Race Against Time
“Stay here, I’ll go talk with the manager – we are making this work” I say to Simon. I race over to the bar and more or less plead with the manager to see if there is any way the band can start some prep work while we have the stream still going. He shakes his head and says “to be honest mate not really unfortunately as we have to clear the entire room.” My heart sinks but it’s out of my hands. He starts to walk away then turns back and says to me “OK here is the deal, I want NO ONE in that room ay 8.45PM literally NO ONE.” I cannot emphasise how much he said no one. “Deal!” I replied and raced back to Simon.
I tell Simon the good news and as Game 7 starts we turn the stream audio off and make a quick announcement. “Ok guys here is the deal. There is a band coming in at 9PM and they were meant to start preparation now but we have been given an extra 15 minutes. We literally have to have nobody in here by 8.45PM so we will continue stream as long as possible but you all have to promise to hall ass out of here at 8.44PM. Deal?” A 100 strong “deal” returns back at us and as we finish talking, two rax appear on screen. CHEESE WHAITING!
Simon and I grin, we might just be able to make it. Some crazy micro later and Squirtle somehow appears to have held the push. Artosis says “This could normalize!” NO F*** OFF I think to myself. I look at the time. 8.42PM – 2 more minutes. I can’t even comprehend what is happening I’m too busy stressing out. 8.43PM the bunker goes up and a few stalkers are sniped. 8:44PM Squirtle drops his head after losing the nexus WE’RE GOING TO MAKE IT!
Then Squirtle GGs. “Everybody get out get out go go go! Thanks for coming we love you all see you next time!” I yell. I have never seen 100 people hall ass out of a room as quickly as I witnessed last night. Even faster than if there was a fire. But wow. 30 seconds. 30 seconds until regardless the stream was to be cut. I don’t think we could have been more clutch than that.
Thanks!
I, on behalf of Simon, apologise for the fact we couldn’t send out love to everybody in a less chaotic fashion at the completion of the event. In an ideal world we would have been able to socialise afterwards and I would have loved to have a drink with a few more people.
The reason the timing was so clutch was because The Metropolitan books bands multiple months in advance. Now we have shown we can pull a crowd – The Metropolitan are eager to have us back and in future we will be able to book in advance so this situation doesn’t happen again.
I know I am eager to continue providing Barcraft opportunities to Adelaide and I am sure Simon will be as well. The next step is to look at Dreamhack, or if not we will have to wait until the next GSL.
We hope everybody enjoyed themselves and thanks for making it such a memorable night. As many of you have read my other blog (http://www.sc2sea.com/blogs/showentry.php?e=422) last night only strengthened my desire and love for esports. See you soon!
Pro tip for future: allow for minimum of 3 hours for any bo7 finals. (25 min avg per match, or 15-20 min per match avg with 5 min avg break in between)
I was very surprised when the manager made the decision to kick out 3/4 of his patrons to allow a band to play when, being an accomplished business manager myself, I would have thought telling the band to start late and agreeing to pay them for their originally booked time would have been the smartest option.
At least MvP was able to get it done in time for us :P

This is what I had planned for. I requested we have until 9PM but had to compromise to 8.30PM. It was a disadvantage in choosing The Metropolitan but to be honest it was the best space availability with the best price - in fact no room hire!
The band originally was meant to play 30 min earlier and we were able to push them back.. I guess they might not have realised the amount of business we were to bring in.
Again the major issue being the proximity to the date when we booked in with them as this whole event came together in a matter of weeks with a final booking made a month out. Now that we know this is a successful event as soon as we know dates in future we will be able to lock them in straight away as to avoid clashes and I am sure having seen first hand what we can offer them in terms of business - they will be more than inclined to cater for us!
That was an epic write up and big thanks for making this all happen. I'm really happy to be apart of the beginnings of the Adelaide sc2 scene. Keep it coming Brad I hold your in pretty high regards.
Sounds like a pretty good barcraft. Who would've guessed so many starcraft fans in such a backwash town like Adelaide.
Tbh, I think doing it every GSL is a good plan because:
1. It's at a good time for us.
2. It keeps them spaced apart so you'll always have a good turnout as people can't just say "i'll just go to the next one" because the next one is 2 months away!
3. There is no 3 but these always look better with more then 2.
