Hey Guys, I think the main thing holding me back is my macro/mechanics, in the early game my mechanics are pretty solid because I don't have alot going on, but as soon as small events start to take place over the map my macro can easily slip. I have a hard time making myself remember to look at my minerals/supply and rarely ever catch crucial things on the mini map. I know once I can make this become second nature I will quickly improve to at least Diamond.
Do you guys have any tips or maybe some exercise that may have helped you keep up with your supply/production/money/minimap throughout the whole game without even thinking about it? Please help.
There are a few macro exercises available in custom games. I know there's one on SEA that involves saving a probe being chased by lings whilst building up an army, and if your minerals/gas gets too high or you get 75% Nexus/CC/Queen energy you automatically lose. It's also a good idea to have a few thoughts cycling through your mind at all times. For example, as a Protoss I ensure that I don't miss a single warp in and try to use up all my chrono boost, even if it's on gateways. As a Zerg, you would aim to have minimal queen energy and not miss injects, etc. In the end it's all about practicing. The more practice you get in, the better you'll get. One game you might miss a few warp ins, next game fix that up and you'll spot another error. Keep going and eventually you'll become a better player.
One thing I do is just going through hotkeys. Like let's say I have my CC as 4, rax as 5, facts as 6 and starport as 7. I would just cycle through all of them to see if they are producing, then appropriately making it produce when there is no production on 1 of them. And by cycling, those times where you aren't doing anything, just press through '4 5 6 7 4 5 6 7' like that to see the production, get used to that.
Also another thing that helps is to have a trigger for an event. One would be whenever there is a battle, remember to macro. Whenever you are about to engage, just let the thought of "I need to produce" run through your head.
Whenever your army fights, try not to just 1a1a1a1a1a. Attack move once, macro, and start to micro again in 5 seconds or so. Sometimes you don't even need to watch the battle.
Attack/cast spells, workers, production, upgrades, supply, back at the battle and then you can micro for a bit while all that ticks over. Then go back through it.
A small amount of focus firing isn't worth missing a whole cycle of production and the faster you get the less it impacts your micro.
