On July 28th season 1 of the somewhat experimental new BSG ClanLeague kicked off. No one could have guessed at the time that after seven weeks of closely fought competition it would not be the developing players from one of the larger established clans, but a group of friends who formed a team just for the tournament, with all the bragging rights. Kelvin's Army started off their BSGCL campaign as a group of mates forming a team in order to participate in the league for fun, without any expectations, but ended the season without dropping a single series.
This article briefly seeks to revisit their amazing BSGCL Season 1 run as well as provide some insight into the player roster, how their success changed the clan, and what their expectations for BSGCL Season 2 are.
To kickstart this write-up I took the time to talk to Peter "Shadowz" Nham, clan leader to find out the secret to KA's season 1 success as well as how they got their intriguing clan name.
1) How did your clan form and why?
The clan was formed when one of us found the information about a clan league, we initially wanted to participate but we barely had enough players. Only had Aeon, Falcon and myself at the time, however we managed to get enough players and we just barely signed up to the clan league. We nearly missed by a few minutes before the cut off.
2) Who were the founding members and why?
Falcon, Formina, Aeon, FantasyBoy and myself were the founding members
3) What is your clan motto or team values, how do you recruit members?
We recruit anyone who wants to join us, but basically we were all school mates originally who wanted to see how we would do in the clanleague
4) Do you play any other games besides SC2?
Nope, starcraft for life
Ever since discovering broodwar in 2009 from a friend I’ve been hooked onto starcraft.
5) Do you intend to be a top competitive clan, a casual friendly clan, stay a BSG level clan, or something else?
For now we’re just casual and friendly, I intend for our team to be in the PD clanleague by the end of this season’s BSGCL...as soon as I can break into platinum
6) What do you think was the secret to your success in season 1?
Good team and alot of luck really helped
7) How did you prepare for your games in season 1?
We usually just played with each other preparing for the first map and preparing for cheeses
8) How has your season 1 experience given you an advantage in season 2 and did it help get you off to a strong start?
It certainly has in my opinion, my team is much more confident, and coming off as the season one winners we managed to pick up some great new recruits. Hellfyre has been doing really well for us and we have new additions TheTallOne who is also a friend from our school.
9) What did it mean to you to win BSGCL Season 1? Was it a surprise, or expected?
Extremely exciting to say the least, leading up to it we were scrambling for players to be able to make the 5 player cutoff.
10) What are some tips out there for other teams to foster a strong BSG level team?
I think the best way to go at it is to practice heaps with your teammates, not only is it fun but it’s helpful having practice partners to play against. I’ve played so many games with falcon I feel like PvT is honestly my strongest matchup. Doing groups obs games as well helps pick out things that neither player usually sees, I’ve drilled so many things into falcon’s head since he’s starting playing and he’s doing well. The rest of the team, we all talk about Starcraft and theorycraft at school and discuss strategies so I think that’s a good way to be strengthen our players
11) Any predictions on this season's finalists and champions?
So far it seems Fade A is our biggest competitor, I hope we get to meet them in the finals for some epic games.
12) How did the team get that name :P
This is a funny story indeed for all of us. When we first wanted to sign up we didn’t know what to call ourselves. Formina suggested that we call it Kelvin’s Army after Falcon, he was our lowest rank player at the time and Formina was trying to troll us. Little did he know that we would eventually call our team that and Formina has been trying to get us to change the name ever since.

The Spoils of War: KA's shiny new logo after their season 1 victory thanks to TCPmagiks
After finishing top of the table in Group A - the Oceania timezone group featuring heavyweights such as BtD and TA - Kelvin's Army was thrust into day 2 of the playoffs. They were up against this PDCL powerhouses FaDe and scraped by with a 5-4 victory. While this might have shaken their confidence, they would have drawn some from the fact that they were to face Brothers Til Death in the final, a team sharing Group A with them that KA had overcome a week earlier with a convincing 4-2 scoreline. Falcon and Shadowz were the heroes of that day and fittingly Falcon was sent out first against BtD in the grand final. However, he was unable to win the opening match.

After playing clutch against BtD in the final round robin week, team leader Shadowz kept his flawless record against the clan alive as he put an end to Olivia's win streak to win four in a row to seal the grand final victory.

However if I had lost...then it certainly would have been over
Overall they won comfortably in the finals thanks to fearless leader Shadow's heroics, but they did have their scares on the way to the finals. See below for the summary of their season 1 performance.

With much of the same lineup from season 1 including their key players, Kelvin's Army will be looking to make it two in a row and make BSGCL history. After 3 weeks of competition KA is already tied for 1st position on the ladder at a score of 3-0 with season 1 semi-final rivals FaDe. In addition to this, their first three weeks have been packed with talented opponents in season 1 finalists BtD (4-2), the in-form Clanless (4-2), and danger clan TA (4-1).
But what do season 1's veterans have to say about their chances this season? Will the pressure of expectation get to them or will they be prepared with their experience?

More Information
White KA has no webpage at the moment, if you are interested in learning more about or joining Kelvin's Army add leader Shadowz on skype at pn.shadowz@gmail.com
Hellfyre – Shoutouts to ESL, Hellfye being one of their prestigious admins
Aeon – Shoutouts to Melbourne High School
TheTallOne – Directly quoted “ You must also mention: our team would also like to put a shout out to TheTallOne, who just recently got a solo hot streak of 3 wins in a row!! 2 of his opponents lost connection however the moral victory still stands”
For myself I would like to give a shout out to all the BSGCL Admins, Maynarde, ToRSynzita, TAedarus, Frogmite for running everything so well. Del for setting up the league initially and has really been an enjoyable experience playing in it, SC2Sea for being such a great community. Lastly, most significantly, and shamelessly of all, shout out to my amazing girlfriend Narida for always being here for me. I love you ♥ and happy one year anniversary baby.
Here’s to another enjoyable season of BSGCL and what may be the last for KA as our members will likely be progressing to plat after our exams.
Oh and if there are any other high schools out there in Australia who would like to run some sort of High School league please contact me. I’m in contact with the leader of the starcraft club at MHS and we’re thinking of organising some sort of league and we want to see if there is enough support we may be able to setup something. Nothing set in concrete yet, just an idea, hopefully this will be a great way to find support for it.
Awesome write up, sounds like there was some really close games. Good luck on your way to the finals.
