Been reading about all the cool sc2 community lan events, and got jealous. We have a decent gaming culture here in Almaty (where I currently reside), but it all revolves around Dota, CS, COD and maybe some other pop ez mode games. I know only one more person from this place who plays sc2, but he is bronze and very bad. Community is very scarce, and finds itself untied with the Russian community online only.
Some 10 years ago, my friends and I would spend 24/7 in internet cafes playing all kinds of games, wc3, NFS, Rune, CS, Sudden Strike and more, just to name a few. Also, we are all fans of RPG's, and in general are computer game nerds.
Now, I'm penetrating ladder, while they all talk about guild raids on broken bosses. They are all playing WoW on a pirate server (cuz them noobs are unemployed and broke). I used to play WoW on US server when I was in college, but quit some 2 years ago. Back then we all had a common game to discuss, which fueled hanging out and conversation.
I tried to lure them into sc2, but they all said they will never be good, cuz sc2 is hard and requires skill (true, but hell, why refuse to play it right here then without even trying?).
They are all good gamers, but are chronically bad at RTS (except for one, who taught me wc3 basics, until I took off on my own in Fp, then Bru, then Empire). Since I've played so much already, and am getting better with each day, skill gap is growing uncontrollably, and they refuse to 1v1 me. We never play, cuz they are all 100% convinced I'd win. They awe at pro sc2 players pulling off miraculous wins. They have respect for wc3 pros and their stupidly perfected micro. But they never want to play the game themselves.
How do I make them play sc2?

Play with them not against them would be my number one tip. You dont have to get them into 1v1 get them into a 2v2 where you can be together (and dont rage on them).
Also be sure to explain how sometimes them being over run enables the win because they are busy (I dont know which one but day9 does a series on it). You can even get them into 4v4 with just 2 of you that way they can see how they are improving. If they enjoy the game eventually they may consider 1v1 laddering.
Let them look at FFAs as well where they can gang up on you and beat you.
Something else that is important is to let them know in starcraft is everyone accept for those who fake results should end up with a 50% win loss average which is kind of bad because a loss feels 3times worse than a win and you only get them at a one to one ratio. So in effect everyone who plays SC2 is "bad".
That would work if they invested into EU accs, which I can't convince them to do (60 euros is kind of a lot of money here for some people). They would've done it long ago if they wanted. The most I can do is bring them to internet cafe with a pirate server, and play amongst us only (cuz no1 else plays it). That is, either 1v1, or 2v1 (not too fun), or 2v2 with team having me being imbalanced.
FFA sounds like a good idea, but in my wc3 experience, it gets old very quickly.
And those awesome UMS maps in sc2 do require a lot of people to be actually fun. Footmen need 12, Desert strike - 6, SOTIS 10, nexus wars - 8.
dippa,
I don't have a gun(

Income wars! 3-4 people, can't remember exactly. Awesome game and will help them learn the units and their counters, which might entice them to play the real game.
The money barrier is definitely a bit of an issue with convincing new players to try the game out. I have a mate at work I've encouraged to play a little, but convincing someone to shell out $80-100 to try out a game that's already a year old is a bit of a hard sell.
As for getting people to play in general, I wish I knew! I have spent quite a bit of energy trying to convince my family/friends/girlfriend that they should get into SC2, but so far my success rate has been extremely low. Team games are definitely a good option, I have managed to get a couple of people playing those and enjoying themselves, but they still go back to their other interests before long.
Personally I've just resigned to the fact that as much as I might love something, there's no guarantee other people will see it the same way. That's why I come to places like sc2sea to find players that can become friends, instead of trying to find friends who can become players
Getting them away from WoW will be hard, especially if they are raiders (took me awhile and a lot of hard work to quit). Perhaps get them to try the free version of SC2 they brought out? Pretty sure if gives basically unlimited play on certain maps with terran...at least they can vs each other and see if they like it?
I'm trying to get my mates into Sc2 now atm aswell.. I'm going to get them to watch the MLG event , I reckon the atmosphere of the event will get them to start playing.
