I am wanting to get a new headset and have been surfing the net a bit and this is what I have come up with so far (i don't need a headset because I'm hardcore btw!! I need to play at night when the kids are asleep so i don't wake anyone up - but my current set is a cheap nasty thing that hurts my ears after about 30min):
Razer Banshee - seems good overall (one review said the cord was a bit short and the standard equalizer settings are not so great). I also want to listen to music at this price, so a versatile headset would be good and i am not sure about this ones overall sound quality. I am a teeny bit worried about all the branding - I am more of an understated kinda person when it comes to products (even though i'll be wearing them at home at night... but anyway).
Logitech G930 WL Gaming headset - This is a wireless set and has 7.1 surround sound. The one review i watched on youtube seemed very positive/ convincing - he was going on about the bass and great sound quality for music which appealed to me. It is more expensive than the razer (you can get it online for around $180). I like the idea of this one so far.
Sennheiser gaming headset - I saw it come up but its hard to find a place that sells them. Also, they seem the most expensive.
Steelseries Siberia V2 - I know little about this except for a youtube clip where I think i saw some pro-gamer recommending these. You can get it in Harvey Norman for around $150.
I currently own the Razer Megalodon headset as well as the Steelseries Siberia V2 headset so the following is based on my own experience with each of them (strictly quality wise, as they're both aesthetically pleasing anyway).
The Siberia V2 headset is probably one of the best headsets available that I've tried, it's got great sound and a great retractable microphone to boot. My only complaint about them is the leather/padding around the earmuffs begun to hurt after medium-long sessions of gaming (from memory, after about 3hours or so it would begin to hurt).
I bought the Razer Megalodon (7.1) headset just to complete my current set-up but overall I really, really impressed with the sound quality of the headset (not that 7.1 has much use in SCII but it doesn't mean it won't sound amazing! And it's also great for some late-night BluRay 7.1 movies!). The microphone had some issues to begin with (a hissing sound) but after a firmware update and playing around with the settings it's fixed and is on par with the Siberia V2. Also, in regards to discomfort or pain, I haven't experienced any whilst wearing my Megalodon head-set (it's a cushion ear-padding as opposed to leather) over long gaming sessions (think 10hrs+).
Both are great headsets, both do their job & in your case both will let you play in peace while you're family are sleeping. From your list, I'd opt for the Siberia V2 (purely as I have no personal experience with the Razer Banshee, although I'm sure a few people around here do) however I do recommend having a look at some reviews/prices for the Megalodons.
For some reason I sometimes get a bit of static with my Siberia. I'm not sure if it's faulty or a problem with my sound card (I'm too lazy to actually figure it out). I've tried the Razer Banshee at the lans and they seem to work pretty well (except they might cost a bit).
Thanks for the feedback. I have to admit that after reading this review http://www.cnet.com.au/razer-megalod...-339298272.htm (thanks Skybreaker for suggesting this option), I have started leaning towards this one now!!
I have the razer carcharias' and while the sound quality is great and the microphone is great. The actually headset is flimsy, and there is no permanent setting (sliding no notches). They are a ventilated system so bass isnt strong. I wouldn't have bought these it I was able to try them on prior to purchase! (in case you go a model down from the megalodons).
I just went through the same questions...My search actually just finished. I didn't really want to spend too much (ie less than $80) but wanted something that I could get lots of comfort for long gaming sessions.
I settled for a set of turtlebeach z2's which I got for $50 from the UK (go oz dollar!) and read SO many reviews that they were comfortable and good value for money. So after submitting the purchase, stumbled upon amazon reviews...and they all say 1-2 stars?! wtf...the product is on the plane somewhere though so I'll give my thoughts when I've got them.
anyone else have any thoughts on the Z2's? Depending on other's feedback, maybe even think about these as they are running rather cheap atm!

No problems man, I really do hope you opt for those as I absolutely mine! To the point of I've always got them on when I'm on my PC; day or night, they're just far too comfortable and have fantastic sound!

Do let us know which you end up going for! :]
I'm going to get these too I reckon I had the Razer Banshees and didn't rate them, always seemed to be a driver issue and it would work perfectly one day and then just not work the next Pretty lights ftw though.
I have a pair of Logitech wrap around ones that are f*cking awesome for mic quality but sound quality not so much. Plus, they get caught in my dreads :P
Turtle Beach range are pretty darn fantastic... i use px21's which retail for about 79-119 depending and i have never had a problem with them... comfortable, sound is great and easy transition from pc to console use if necessary

I've also got a pair of these (use them for when I feel like playing some PS3) but I've got to admit the sound isn't great and the fact that there's literally 10-20 metres of cables as they're made for the distance of console gaming makes them a terrible investment.
The overall build-quality of the PX21s is quite poor, and the entire headset feels flimsy to the point where you feel as if one accidental drop will be sending you back out to purchase a new pair.
The PX21s, in my opinion, aren't worth the money considering there are far more greater options available for not that much more than what a pair of these would set you back. Also, found major discomfort after 1-2hrs of use. The above is strictly my opinion based on my experience with them, of course.

EDIT:
Also, @Delraich - the Megalodon comes with a very, very sexy hard-case for the headset so it makes traveling with them anywhere an absolute pleasure!
I myself is thinking about getting a headset too, but I really don't know what to get because there are so many in the market which offers everything. I want the siberia V2 but its truly expensive since I live here in the Philippines (shipping + price = too expensive). How bout the razer orca has anyone tried them? I watch some videos some said its pretty good. Any advices guys?
I got my Logitech G930s on eBay (brand new) in April for $140.
I love them.
For me, wireless was essential. I've got a newborn baby and a Shih Tzu that seems just as needy, so I'm off and running to do stuff at home all the time.
Plus, I love watching streams and I can just walk to the fridge for a cold one without even missing out on the sound.
I'm sure they aren't as good as some of the glorious wireless gaming headsets, but I doubt I'd even detect the difference in quality and even if I did, the practicality dominates it.
Battery life is great too, haven't had them run out yet (although I am a bit diligent on charging them when not in use) and even if they did, the cord runs forever so I can listen to them on the USB charging cable.

Reason: Added that the eBay purchase was brand new,
I own a megaladon. I can confirm that the quality is fantastic due to the built in soundcard that the megaladon has. However be warned, the headset is heavy and prolonged use might give some users a bad headache.
After reading highlander's recommendation i might just give it a try. Wireless seems essential for a home with three attention seeking dogs!
G930 is a good headset if you can afford it. As far as my headsets go Ive slowly upgraded I went from a cheep surround sound headset. To the G35 then up to the G930. The only thing with the G930 is remembering to turn it on when your using it. The wireless part I find is great when Im watching streams and there is dead time between games means your not tied to your computer. If your planning to use your headset for other applications other than the PC it probably is not the one to get as its USB.
As highlander said the battery life is good I think its mean to be about 10 hours it also gives you an hour battery life left warning sound (you can turn it on and off) to remind you to charge it. I think it goes off every 10 min till you plug it in. It also self turns off if no sound (not sure about other functions wireless buttons etc) is heard for 15-20 min give or take. This can be a little frustrating if I go browse the net for a while between stuff with sound. How ever most games have constant sound in them.
I also found that because the g930 has more swivel in the ear cups it is a little more robust than other ones. I ended up breaking my g35 at the cup swivel so far the g930 has probably had more falls and has held up. Of cause I dont advise dropping one to test it but it hasnt broken yet (touch wood).
Also if you have any doubts about the surround sound its sounds like the sound is coming from outside the headset when you turn on the 7.1 sound switch it is a little disturbing when you first use it in an FPS because it sounds like people are walking behind you. Im sure most decent quality surround sound headsets are as good.
In summery when I was looking at getting a surround sound headset I was is it really worth it ... now that i have one I do not think I will ever not use one if the option is there for me. When I bought it I was so sold on how good the headset was I went out and got a second on for my G/F. If someone finds a better one though feel free to let me know.
this G930... will it connect to a TV w/lessly too?
It uses software and USB so I dont think so how ever their may be some way to do it other than mine which is just use a HD TV as a computer screen. I no longer actually watch TV.
hi! It so happens that i'm looking for a gaming headset as well.
Alot of people recommended me the Sennheiser Brand. (Seinhiesser 555, Seiheisser PC 166, PC 350)
My budget is around 150 so I considered other products such as Razer Carcharis and the Steel Series Siberia V2. I've been googling the comparison between these two headsets and they seem even.
After reading highlander's recommendation i might just give it a try. Wireless seems essential for a home with three attention seeking dogs!
As an aside, I just finished recording a video answer to a question on another forum. So, you can check out how effective my Logitech G930 mic is here:
