I have a pretty good idea on what I am supposed to do against zerg who FE and go roach-hydra (i basically follow the Incontrol build order - 3 gate expo, but put the forge at the base of the ramp like I've seen on Pinders replays).
Unfortunately, this doesnt seem to work v well when a bunch of mutalisk's arrive in your main while u have a bunch of sentries at the foot of your ramp.

Does all of the above happen on 1 base? Or do i still go 3 gate - nexus - pylon - forge. Maybe at this point the canon doesnt go at the base of the ramp but instead you get more in the mineral lines and build 2 stargate instead of the robo bay and facility? Once this is set up, do you basically make 2 armies - one for the ground (is this a gate way army since u made stargates?) while making phoenix for the muta's?
You can start off with 1 stargate and make like 3 phoenix for harass and scouting before deciding whether he going 1 base muta. If that happens on 1 base, i suggest u dont expand too early. Scout him with hallucinated phoenix / real phoenix b4 u expand
Earliest realistic timing for mutas is around the 9min mark. Plenty of time to 3gate fast expand with hallucination for phoenix scouts. If you see pure lings and 4 gas, its mutas so just get cannons and phoenixes. =) Its the same gateway push but instead of more colossus, its with colos with phoenixes. The phoenixes will provide you map control too so that's a bonus
If you went robo tech, it is annoying to deal with, I also find if i go DTs or templar tech, use ur stalkers for harras untill you can get an archon / cannons up.
pressure is the counter to muta ling, if you dont pressure you are going to lose. once he does get his mutas out 2 cannons at min line and get blink, if he reaches a large mass (20+ mutas) get storm or phoenix and rape him. guardian shield helps greatly too in engagements
3 gate FE is very strong build. I can't beat a masters level 3 gate FE as zerg because so easy to scout as protoss with hallucination.
You can adapt the build accordingly, See only 1 queen per base go in and void ray harrass, see lair and roaches you might want robo
If you mutas you can go stargate route or 6 gate blink stalkers perhaps? the 3 gate FE seems like most versatile build of any race in SC2
