does anyone else miss playing in SEACL every week as much as me? getting the chance to prepare for a specific opponent on a specific map is just so much more rewarding than ladder. We're not running a SEACL3, but until that happens we are running a smaller weekly online tournament for perth SC2 players who are interested.

The aim was to create a weekly tournament that is as enjoyable to play in as possible for players of all skill levels, which a Swiss system will provide. for those who don't know how a Swiss bracket works, matchups in the first week will be randomly generated, then after that you will only be matched against opponents who are on the same number of wins for the season as yourself. Every player will be ranked at the end of the season, every match counts. no players are eliminated in Swiss system tournaments. Wikipedia has a nice detailed article for anyone still confused.

I'm hoping to have as many Perth players as possible participate. to encourage people to play (even if they don't think they can win) there will be a 'competitors prize' awarded to a player drawn at random from those who meet the following criteria:
a) signed up
b) had 0 forfeits over the 8 week season
c) is at the finals, either as a player or spectator

anyone can do that!

for detailed rules, check out http://perthbarcraft.com.au/starleague.php

obviously this will produce a lot of games, and aspiring casters who are would like to help us out (either at the offline finals or casting some of the better matches from the Swiss bracket) let us know!

a reminder that sign ups for this close in a few days (friday morning).
so if you're planning to sign up do so now or i won't love you any more.

everyone who signed up: confirmation emails have been sent out to everyone who registered, if you have not received a confirmation email please contact myself or Tim asap.

we have more signups reporting their league as below diamond than above diamond (lot's of golds). i can not emphasise enough that being a 'lower league' player will not prevent you from having fun in this league.

Register before friday by submitting the following details to starleague@perthbarcraft.com.au

Zealo's PBSL2 preview:

Open only to West Australians, PBSL2 will be an 8 week, 8 round swiss tournament followed by the top 6 qualifying for a live finals event. The finals series will use a format which favours players who earn higher seeds from the regular season, so every spot (and every match) is important.

The following is purely my opinion, someone with more knowledge of the Perth players will probably tell me why I'm wrong.

To my knowledge, none of the competitors have ever competed in a league where you get a week to prepare for each opponent. Some will obviously handle it better than others and climb/drop ranks due to this factor. Some will drop ranks because they can't make it every week. i haven't taken these factors into account.

With that said, here are my predictions for the top end of the ladder come season end...

The Favourite:
1) Frustration
Representing x5, whether you love him or (more likely) can't stand him he's the outright favourite to win this league. since he entered the scene out of (seemingly) nowhere 5 months ago he has proven himself more than capable in online and off-line events, finishing 2nd to yang in his first tournament before winning a masters cup and RFlan41. While some people love to question his attitude; the level of passion, manner and ability I've seen from him at the last two RFlans greatly impresses me. Now that Perth SC2 is in the post yang era, frustration will go into every single match a red hot favourite, I see him going 8-0 for the season unless his schedule forces him to forfeit a match at some point.

The contender:
2) MrToast
Officially clan-less since the disbanding of wT (we consider him an honorary member of AsG these days), toast has been one of the top terrans in the Perth scene since I started getting involved as a low plat player. Toast has long history of finishing 2nd or 3rd in off-line events, most recently coming runner up in PBSL1 and RFlan41. If there's anyone left in Perth that can take the title from frustration, it's this guy.

Underachievers:
These guys all have reputations in Perth as good players, but don't really have the tournament results to justify those reputations. there's a high possibility I'm being biased because they're clan-mates of mine.

3) AsGNadir
One of those people who practices on the Korean server because he's too good for the rest of us. my pick for best zerg in Perth since i started paying attention to Perth SC2 tournaments, but Nadir has never really had a result that lives up to my high expectations for him. Hopefully being able to plan out every map (ie when to build a spawning pool :P ) will help him finally get that win he deserves.

4) Goosejuice
Recently recruited by pX after finally bothering to get promoted to GM. He's usually too busy to attend lans, but seems pretty keen for this league after being the dominant protoss back in SEACL tier 4. He's always willing to help people learn the game and has been my primary mentor/practice partner/2v2 crutch since I started playing. I'm expecting big things.

5) AsGCHoBo
Some say this infamous terran has gold-diamond level skills, some say low GM, he claims his current ladder rank (high GM) is legit. He managed to knock nadir out of the last RFlan. Chobo is generously donating to the prize pool, one of the BSG players will be receiving a coaching session from him. If his ladder rank is as legit as he claims, he shouldn't have any trouble reaching the off-line finals and performing well enough to silence his critics.
(Please don't derail the thread over any issues with Chobo and his past actions. All replays of this league will be made public, start a new thread if you find any evidence of wrongdoing by any player. PM me or Mooseable if you have any concerns)

Dark Horses:
Previously unknown (to me, at least) Perth GMs that have popped up recently and not really interacted with the rest of the Perth SC2 community much as far as I've noticed. if someone mentions them in Perth chat you can expect a response of "Who's that?" from most people. I haven't watched much gameplay, and nothing at all in the last 3 months, from any of them. It's entirely possible one of them has been practising hard enough to cause some upsets.

***** (see edit at bottom) *****

6) TNnomad
A protoss who I'm pretty sure beat some good players at the last two or three RFlans. I can't remember exactly and can't find the old brackets anywhere

7) Why
GM zerg who came 4th in PBSL1 iirc

8) Scalaz
GM protoss. i think he attended an RFlan or two?

9) FaDeUndoNe
A terran who i remember made a blog on Sc2sea that said he was happy about reaching GM but he would have to give up SC2 when uni resumes next year.

10) FaDeRawfish
I remember this zerg from PD clan league and SEACL tier 4. He was way better than me then, so if he's kept up his practice (i think he has, he lists his rank on the sign up as "KR Masters") he should be capable of taking down some names much higher on this list. He's never been to a LAN tournament as far as I know, so I always forget that he's actually from Perth.

Wildcards:
I would be shocked if they finished top 3, but they have the ability to cause upsets and possibly sneak a place in the finals. once again, I'm obviously highly biased here.

11) AsGSedz
The SC2 captain of AsG almost single handedly built the Perth SC2 scene around the tournaments he and Griefer used to run, and has been rewarded by having me troll him constantly ever since. From what I've seen on his stream, his ladder play isn't super impressive; but when he gets a chance to enter tournaments instead of running them, his consistently strong play style almost always snares him a result that exceed everyone's expectations. A few months on after switching to terran, i believe his skill has finally reached where he was as zerg. I know he's been training hard lately, I want to see some results.

12) AsGZealo (me)
The stereotypical random player / 2v2 player / troll. I haven't been able to play much in the last few months and I've never really taken 1v1s seriously when i do get to play. i do have a super competitive personality though, I'm hoping that playing as random will make me harder to prepare for, and when combined with my uncommon play-style I'm looking forward to causing some upsets.

Underated:
x) Paul
He only started playing this year, his 1v1 rank has improved from gold to high diamond in the 4 months since I started playing with him (I'm going to pretend my coaching played a major part in this). He would have improved a lot faster, but he mostly focuses on team games and almost never ladders 1v1. In practice games I'd rate him mid masters at least, last RFlan he got everyone's attention when he took a map off Nadir. The PBSL season is 2 months long, I'll be very interested to see if he keeps improving at such a rapid rate and where he finishes on the table.

Most of the above players will be at RFlan next week, results there will probably give a pretty good indication of how the PBSL table will actually end up looking.

ROUND 1 match to watch:
Sedz vs Liquid.
Round 1 is completely randomised, so there are a lot of mismatches. These two should produce an entertaining series though.

***** EDIT:
Mvp
Added into the bracket at the last minute, I remember not having heard of him when he was late finding the channel to the qualifier for PBSL1 and managed to take home the 3rd place prize. I'm pretty sure he's attended and RFlan or two without any outstanding results. I'm slotting him in above Nomad based on his relative success playing in front of the barcraft crowd last time

- I was assuming the random seeding for round 1 would give about 4 or 5 close matches that would be fun to cast. unfortunately, as my visits to the casino confirm, random luck hates me. every match was (on paper) completely one-sided with the exception of FaDeRawfish vs wTMrToast.

- Unfortunately, FaDeRawfish was kicked out of the league as punishment for politely requesting to withdraw from the league. I hope he learned his lesson. Rawfish vs Toast turned out even more one-sided than the rest of the round with Toast securing a solid walkover.

- Liquid vs Sedz, my pick for match of the round, was indeed close every game, with Sedz managing to secure the win after dropping the first game. My prediction as match of the round was looking pretty good until the very last match to be played was submitted.

- AsGriefer decided he wants to play in this league after all, and asked to replace the slot in the bracket left by Rawfish's departure. This request was granted, with the penalty for late sign-up being that Griefer forfeits round 1.

- Match of the round: Gubna vs TNnomad. Some verry close PvPs between the GM nomad and the diamond ranked Gubna.

- Upset of the round: Nabi walked over SuperNova, but all matches that actually got played went to the clear favourites. Platinum player Paulsgay did manage to take a game off a GM with a well executed 7 pool.

All forfeits this round gave their opponent enough notice, with the exception of the double no show match, so no one had to waste any time sitting in a channel which I'm very happy with. I'm looking forward to round 2, and hoping to see the 3rd map used a bit more this time.

Zealo's round 2 preview:

ROUND 2
game 1: WCS antiga shipyard

game 2: WCS daybreak

game 3: WCS ohana

Looks better than round 1, but still plenty of (probably) 1 sided matches, especially amongst last week's winners.

With RFlan this weekend, many of these players are going to be playing a lot of SC2 this week

Match to watch: AsGZealo vs AsGThor games are always hilarious, and I think Goosejuice and AsGArmi's styles will be interesting to watch match up against each other. However, all of that is just distracting from what may be the match which decides the winner of the league.

after both of them received walkovers last week, we have: wTMrToast versus Frustration.

i can't wait

as the above posts indicate, between round 1 and 2 of PBSL an RFlan (largest regular LAN event in australia) happened.

this gives us a chance to compare my ranking predictions to some actual recent results.

my prediction on the left, RFlan finish on the right. (DNA = did not attend)

1) Frustration - 1st, did not drop a map

2) MrToast - DNA

3) AsGNadir - DNA
4) Goosejuice - 5th-6th, lost to AsGChoBo 1-2 and AsGArmi 1-2
5) AsGCHoBo - 2nd, lost to Frustration twice

6) Mvp - DNA
7) TNnomad -DNA
8) Why - DNA
9) Scalaz - DNA
10) FaDeUndoNe - DNA

11) AsGSedz - DNA
12) AsGZealo (me) - 7th-8th, lost to AsGArmi 1-2 and AsGThor 0-2

x) Paul - 9th-12th, lost to Goosjuice and AsGZealo

the players in my 'don't show up to tournaments often' group lived up to their reputation. but the players who did show up finished in approximately the order i predicted (the exceptions being goosejuice and myself under performing)

other: probably worth watching these players in PBSL
AsGArmi - 3rd, lost to frustration and AsGChoBo. beat Zealo and Goosejuice
AsGThor - 4th, lost to AsGChoBo and AsGArmi. beat Zealo and BLTdAXn
both of them were considered for the 'wildcard' section of my early predictions, but were omitted because the list was already too long and I rated them below sedz and myself.
my explanation/excuse is that goose and i had both screwed up our sleep schedules and showed up really tired, though it was pretty obvious that these two had been practising much more lately than I realised. I think every series Armi won was a 2-1 score line where he came within inches of losing the series, which speaks to his ability to perform under pressure.

BLTdAXn - 5th -6th, lost to frustration and AsGThor
i had seen his name a few times, but never seen him play. very impressed he got as far as he did, taking down Default along the way.

Gubna - 7th-8th, lost to chobo and armi,
I remember playing against this guy at lans back when we were both gold terrans. now he's come out of seemingly nowhere as a diamond protoss, taken down Default on the way and produced some very entertaining games, especially in PvP.

RFlan42 rematches in PBSL2 round 2:
AsGArmi vs Goosejuice - RFlan = 2-1, PBSL =
+ Show +
2-1

AsGThor vs AsGZealo - RFlan = 2-0, PBSL =
+ Show +
0-3

- the swiss system match making is starting to kick in, a lot more close matches this round.

- Unfortunately, we've had another withdrawal, TEAlordkabab. his future opponents will all receive byes.

- Toast vs Frustration; my pick for match of the round ended up being awarded to frustration as a walkover. toast didn't show up for RFlan either despite having pre paid for a ticket I'm hoping that eventually Frustration will actually have to play to pick up a win instead of scaring his opponents into forfeiting

- there were just as many walkovers as there were in round 1, i was hoping there would be less each week as the tournament progressed

- Match of the round: AsGArmi vs Goosejuice. even more entertaining than their RFlan match. Solid macro from both players producing a very entertaining back and forth series. also very entertaining was Nomad vs Why (Nomad is making a habbit of winning awesome series), especially game 3 which came down to 1 hero dt.

- Upset of the round: obsta vs gubna. after gubna's impressive PvPs lately i assumed he would have no trouble with obsta, who recently switched race and has seemed inactive lately. obsta chose to play as his old race (zerg) and picked up a 2-0.

]Zealo's round 3 preview:

ROUND 3

game 1: WCS cloud kingdom

game 2: WCS shakuras plateau

game 3: WCS entombed valley

The swiss system is finally doing a good job of match making, most of the mismatches this round are due to one or both of the players either getting walked over or receiving a free win from walkover in the first 2 weeks, but not much can be done about that.

this round takes place over the xmas and new year period, so players are given 2 weeks to organise their matches, could be some interesting results if one player has more chance to practice over the break.

Match to watch: The obvious ones are Nomad vs Undone and mvp vs Nadir, Scalaz vs Chobo will probably also be exciting. My pick's going to be Nomad vs Undone because it's not ZvZ.

ROUND 4

game 1: abyssal city

game 2: WCS tal darim altar

game 3: WCS cloud kingdom

The swiss continues to improve the matchups, i expect almost every match this week to be close (with a couple of glaring exceptions caused by walkovers in earlier rounds)

with abyssal and tal darim both in the list this week and next, i imagine most protosses won't be happy. fortunately for them they have CK as map 3. most of the protosses in contention for the finals have PvP this week anyway.

this week will also see the top ranked BSG player awarded the coaching session prize.
player who look to be in contention:
(name-score-tie break score)
AsGNabi-2-2
Khyron-1-2
sandhippo-1-2
InvaderZim-1-2
criven-1-2
Paulsgay-1-2
bigtwinkie-1-2

i don't know if it's mathematically possible for Nabi to fall behind, but i think it's possible kice may pass the prize on to 2nd place.

Match to watch: Scalaz vs MVP, both had solid performances last week and will be going into this week very confident.

ROUND 5

game 3: WCS tal darim altar

HAHAHA look at those maps! Of course the 3 least popular maps in the pool would show up together in one of the rounds! Hahaha...

Hopefully we see a lot of 'unique' and 'classic style' games

Most of the people who regularly no-show are matched against others who do the same thing, which is nice.

Match to watch: Nomad vs Frustration - The match which will finally give us an outright leader. Undone vs MVP should also be a good match, but the top of the table PvP (on Tal darim! ) is what i'm excited about.

RFLan#42 rematches:
Goosejuice vs CHoBo (2-1 CHoBo @ RFLan)

the 2nd last week! there are 7 matches i'm looking forward to watching

I believe if Nomad wins this week his TB score is enough to guarantee him the 1st place finish even if he loses next week, but we will see.

Match to watch: Frustration vs Why - I pick this over Nomad's match because i get the impression that goosjuice hasn't been practicing much lately. Also Frustration's late game focussed PvZ is fun to watch.

not all the results are finalised yet, but i think it's safe to assume the last 2 matches are going to be double walkovers, they have until 9am to send results in if the games were played...

- Round took place over xmas and new year, which resulted in many forfeits.

- Nomad vs Undone; for the second week in a row the match I was most looking forward to ended up being a walkover

- Of the matches that were played, all of them were very one sided as far as i can tell.

- Match of the round: MVP vs Nadir, MVP makes a strong claim to the title of best ZvZ in perth.

- Upset of the round: Scalaz vs Chobo, Scalaz defends himself against the chobo cheese and takes the series 2-0 in quick fashion.

we are left with only 6 players undefeated; Frustration, Armi, Nomad, Paul, MVP, Scalaz (who is on 2 wins and a draw)

while none of them are guaranteed to be in the final 6 that make finals (there'll be no more easy matches for any of them), it should be entertaining to watch them match up against each other next week and once again halve the numbers of undefeated players.

Thor vs dAXn
2 - 0 at RFlan

frustration vs Armi
2 - 0 at RFlan

- Some people weren't happy about playing on tal darim and/or abyssal city, i'm sure they'll be less happy playing on them a second week in a row in round 5

- Mvp vs Scalaz; Once again my most anticipated match was a walkover, it is clearly a curse.

- Match of the round: Nomad vs Paul - Yet again Nomad comes out on top in the most entertaining series this round.

- Upset of the round: dAXn vs Thor - dAXn has clearly been laddering hard since RFlan, it's good to see that hard work translating into results.

- We are left with only 3 players undefeated; Frustration and Nomad will be fighting it in round 5 for outright top place, while Scalaz sits half a win behind after his partying induced draw in round 1.

- The winner of the free coaching prize has been decided (the top placed bronze, silver or gold ranked player after 4 rounds receives a 1 hour coaching session from grandmaster AsGCHoBo)

Congratulations BigTwinkie!

+ [RFlan#42 rematches:] +

Goosejuice vs CHoBo
1 - 2 at RFlan
2- 1 in PBSL

- This was the most exciting round so far in terms of matches, even though it seems like half of them were PvP

- The results each week now have a new factor to watch for; i haven't done all the maths, but I'm expecting the cut off for the final 6 to be somewhere in the group of players on 5 wins from 8 games. So anyone who accumulates their 4th loss is pretty much out of contention, anyone racking up a 3rd loss is on shaky ground and needs a good TB score (wins earlier in the season help tie break score more than later wins)

- Nomad vs Frustration; For once my anticipated match actually got played, Nomad surprised everyone and came away as the last undefeated player, can he stay that way all season?

- Match of the round: dAXn vs Paul - All 3 games coming down to the wire. There were a few other good series this week, but this one was my favourite

- Upset of the round: SuperNova vs Zealo - well done supernova! Now win the next 3 weeks please to make my tie break score better.

- as a nice change, we got some matches at the top end which are not PvP

- several players have changed Bnet IDs, including:
Scalaz > ScalaToR
AsGCHoBo > AsGKiceK
FaDeUndoNe > RichocheT

- Last week i estimated the cut off for the final 6 would be somewhere in the 5 points range. looking at the table this week i can't see a way for anyone on less than 6 points to make the cut.

- over recent weeks; Nadir has withdrawn, while mvp and MrToast continue to be awol on match days. this creates a situation where players in the top half of the ladder are receiving byes (free wins), where they otherwise would have been huge underdogs, this jumbles the ladder greatly, which is unfortunate. more tragically, it leaves the top of the ladder protoss dominated.

- Nomad vs Armi: nomad crushes his way through another top of the table PvP in convincing fashion

- Match of the round: dAXn vs Goosejuice - some entertaining (if sloppy) super late game ZvPs and a mind game win in game 1's PvP.

- Upset of the round: All the matches went the way i expected, so wtchuwahmon taking a map off chobo is my pick.

- best matches so far, almost all the matches played were evenly matched and entertaining.

- still way too many PvPs

- kice, scalaz, daxn and paul drop out of the running for the top 6.

- Goosejuice and Frustration joined Nomad in securing a top 6 finish

- Frustration vs Why: Frustration showed his class and won easily, probably the least entertaining of the series i watched from this round.

- Match of the round: Nomad vs Goosejuice - The Goose managed to overcome some his sever lag issues and lack of practice (due to lag issues) to actually make the top of the table clash exciting.

- Upset of the round: Goose > Nomad - After his 6-0 start vs most of the best perth has to offer, Nomad's run is stopped by the 400 ping Goose. NovaD and Head also managed surprising victories to keep themselves in the running for the top 6.

for those interested, Moosable has uploaded some more casts of PBSL matches to youtube (featuring the awesome guest caster Temp0 for a few matches)

this probably should have been posted earlier, but to avoid confusion we didn't want to release details until we confirmed them.

LIVE FINALS DETAILS

Location:
The Broadway Tavern
88 Broadway, Crawley-Nedlands, Western Australia

Date/Time:
23rd of February
12:15pm to 5:30pm
players to check in by 11:45, if any player has not arrived by this time their spot in the finals will be forfeit and every player seeded below them will be promoted 1 spot. It is suggested that players who just missed out on playing in the finals bring their peripherals in case of this.

Prizes:
as well as random give-a-ways for spectators, the prizes are as follows:

1st place - $150
2nd place - $100
3rd place** - $50
Competitor's Prize* - Powershield UPS

cash prizes were donated by AsGZealo and Moosable, the UPS was donated by Powershield. Horize have provided the laptops which will be used to run the matches.

* drawn randomly from players attending/spectating the finals who had 0 forfeits for the season

** In the event that the 1st or 2nd seed does not compete in the live finals, they will be awarded 3rd prize which will be transferred to them electronically. The players who show up will be competing for only the 1st and 2nd place prizes.

Format:
King of the Hill

I wanted to make sure the finals used a format that rewarded players for their performance in the swiss bracket, and gave them significant motivation to aim for even 1 slot higher on the ladder. I feel this format achieves that aim.

Players will be seeded based on their final standing in the regular season swiss bracket. Starting with 5th vs 6th, the winner will continue onto the next match while the loser will drop out, until after 5 matches we are left with the champion. The first two matches will be Bo3, the next two Bo5 and the grand final Bo7.

in ugly chart form:
http://i.imgur.com/3PF5d.jpg

For the Bo3s and Bo5s, each player will give the admins 1 veto (without knowing the other player's veto), the players will then take turns choosing maps, starting with the higher seeded player, until the required number of maps have been added to the list.

For the Grand Final, the #1 seed will get one veto, the remaining 7 maps will be played in alphabetical order (ignoring prefixes ie WCS).

what if neither the first nor the second seed turn up to the live finals? I'm not sure I understand the 3rd place prize rules.

in that unlikely event, then the $50 prize will be sent to the winner of the swiss bracket, and the 6 highest finishing players who do attend the live finals will compete for the 1st and 2nd prizes.

My guess is that if a seed doesn't show up then the "king" just moves straight on to play the next highest seed.
