Why is noone mentioning the good ol' Gameboy Advance versions! My favourite Pokemon game of all time has to be Pokemon Emerald, followed closely by Yellow. I just loved capturing Rayquaza and owning the Elite 4 with just 2 pokemon =D
COmpetitive pokemon seems pretty time-consuming though. You have to breed a pokemon for the right nature, then EV train it. EV (Effort Value, which is something like the extra stat points that your pokemon get when they level up) training being training your pokemon against a specific pokemon because each pokemon has an EV value.

Oh god, that would be ridiculous haha. Competetive Pokemon is played over the Internet using simulator programs for PC, where you can just have max level/perfect EV/IV Pokemon and pick what moves they have without to actually level them up

Oh then yeah that makes a lot more sense. Still the way I played pokemon was have nothing but high dmg attack moves.
EV training with the right items doesn't take that long, IV breeding takes ages.
Fun game, love it, still play on my night shifts occasionally, I never actually played Ruby or that Gen, but I have played every other Gen including black/white, can't say I haven't had fun and put many hours into it
Balance in Pokémon hasn't been a problem for a while. There are now, as of Black/White, 649 Pokémon, and you can have a 'deck' of six Pokémon. There are top tier Pokémon and top tier teams, as in everything else, but there are enough options that most people don't care that Bidoof isn't competitive.
PS. Someone please correct me if Bidoof is actually a competitive Pokémon.
From what I can piece together, competitive play is broken into tiers. The top tier is for Pokemon that the community considers OP. So the only time these are used is against tiers of other OP Pokemon (think teams of legendaries vs legendaries)
The tier below that is for Pokemon with good stats and whatever, but is not clearly imbalanced. This is the most played and competitive tier. There are actually enough options within this tier, that seeing the same team twice is a rarity.
Below this are a few more tiers of weaker Pokemon.
So basically, teams only play against teams from the same tier.
I think, I haven't read about this stuff in ages (and I've never actually played lolol)
Pokemon gold and silver were probably my favourites. I really enjoyed the fact you could visit the kanto region. I really hope one day game freak makes a pokemon game that allows you to visit all the regions, If two were possible on the gameboy colour surely the ds could handle them all. Its also those key moments in G/S that remain so vivid in my mind. That strange tree that I had no idea how to get past. Endless nights at the casino trying to get myself an abra. The kimono girls. Getting mad at the bitch in the lighthouse that wouldnt battle me until I finally found surf and could get the medicine. And the glorious feeling of capturing a HoHo, then feeling guilty as the exp points of my whole team sufffered while I abused hoho all the way up to and including the pokemon league
i think gold/silver and before were the best pokemons charmander was the best

I love Pokemon, huge fan as a kid, huge nerdy fan as an adult, over the past year or so I've played through most of the games on Emulator and Soul Silver/White on a DSi, I played some competitive Pokemon for a bit and it was pretty fun, haven't played in ages. Can't wait for the next game, defs want to re-play Black/White when I can find some time as well.
