TL: DR
I begin this post with a hypothesis:

Playing an off-race is highly beneficial for improving your overall Starcraft 2 ability.

The rest of this article will be about justifying this claim, as well as about how to best utilize this idea of 'playing an offrace' to improve your Starcraft 2 skills.

Basic Assumptions:
You should be mechanically sound
Your macro needs to be of a decent level. If your macro is the worst part of your gameplay, playing offraces will NOT help you improve much in your mainrace.
You should be at least Platinum or above, preferably Diamond
If you're in BSG your problems are mostly compounded by macro issues, not strategic errors. This is not to say that the various decision-making / judgement skills you gain from playing offrace is irrelevant to you, just that it is of less benefit to you than to a Diamond/Masters player.
