This is a difficult question to answer.

Some players pick up the game with ease, get diamond in no time and GM soon after.
Some struggle even in bronze/silver or even gold and never seem to get promoted despite playing many games.
Some get to plat/diamond or even masters but seem to stay there forever.

If you made a full time commitment to the game, got coaching till masters and spent a lot of time looking over your games and learning from your mistakes, I'd say you can achieve GM on NA server within 3-4 months from newbie. But there are soooo many variables. Hard to answer. :/

You can't take the -average- because you are not accounting for the people who have tried since the beginning of WoL but still haven't gotten GM. Same for those who want Masters.

You should focus on the "How" aspect instead of "When".

EDIT: Think of the "How"s for yourself, and give yourself an estimate of how long will you take to hit those objectives.

For real though, the length of time isn't set, there is no real average unless there's a strong definition of the word "Good". Diamond is good. Do you mean Masters/GM? Those would be great, Do you mean the point where you get the wimminz like Huk? That's amazeballs.

The time is changed by how much effort you put into practicing not only the theory side (builds etc.) but also your mechanics.

Well personally, I came into sc2 never touching a rts except for the wc3 campaign which I couldn't even beat without cheats on. It took me 4 years, around 15k~~ games and I made gm just a couple seasons ago. so it depends on how much experience you've got in similar games and how well you are picking up new things.
It also depends how you define good, being gm doesn't mean you're any good but being diamond does mean you're good in comparison to plat, gold, silv, bronze so it's all about perspective.

Well I was in Silver for a year. Then I actively sought out build orders and ways to improve and I went from Silver to Masters (SEA GM back when it actually had 200 spots) in like 8 months. Since then though, I have only been verrrrrrrrrry slowly improving. The higher you climb up the mountain the harder it gets to take another step and the easier it gets to fall off.

I myself have been playing roughly 5 games a day everyday for over a year and im still diamond. not to mention i never switched races. so yeah, this game is stupidly hard

Played pretty actively since day 1 of WoL and never got past Diamond in any server besides SEA.

waiiit.. I just realised, this question really needs some context...

What race are you playing?

If you play Protoss, it'll probably take you about 3 weeks of solid play/learning to get decent. Then refine your builds and learn a bit more and you can achieve GM on NA server within 2 months.
