I love watching StarCraft II. I spend a lot of time in the study with my headphones on listening, watching and taking notes. But the one thing I don't have when watching eSports is someone by my side that I can discuss the game with ad nauseum like I can with the AFL. (Carn the Blues!)
There is no doubt about it, eSports is taking off. So in order to get eSports happening in Australia, I am going to get BarCraft events in Melbourne happening. Initially this will be aimed at the larger StarCraft II tournaments such as the GSL, MLG, DreamHack and IPL. Hopefully this will also see local tournaments shown such as the ACLPro event in 2012 on the Gold Coast.
Please fill out the quick survey below, so I can get the ball rolling - hopefully with the first event being the GSL Finals on December 3rd!
BarCraft at the Mana Bar was ******* shockingly bad.
1. Venue doors opened later than the event start time (a time which they advertised as the start time for them too!) was about 15 minutes late opening?
2. Took about 30-45mins after opening for the stream to go up on the tele.
3. Minimal people there, still not enough seating (not a huge issue but there's no 'bar' to congregate around anyways)
4. Venue too small to be a worthwhile event.
Myself and a mate went, and while the beer was good and the company was alright (although the atmosphere did not encourage mingling) the event was just bad and we left after half an hour to go get drunk elsewhere.
The main things (from my ONE experience, heh) to keep in mind are:
1. Venue size / capacity
2. Seating / space (can you park your arse or find somewhere to stand as a group without blobbing in the entryway)
3. Atmosphere - if the place has none don't bother
4. The hosts - do they seem switched on? Organised? Keen? If they don't properly support the event it will fail.
5. The 'centrality' of the location - is it easy enough to get to (public transport being a biggy since there will be booze-o-hol consumed and people shouldn't be drink-driving.)
GL to getting something organised matey and keep us posted, would love an event to take hold and be as good as BarCraft should!
You have my support 110%

Did you stay for the Arena of Legends? Much better than the Blizzcon invitational Quals?
I helped them put the stream on for that and it was much better, audience was engaging and stuff, but venue still really small
Narr matey, was only there for about 30 minutes of SC2 then boogied.
I did laugh at one stage tho, when a bloke tried to get in wearing shorts and was knocked back, then a woman waltzes in with REALLY short shorts on and they didn't say boo!
Double standards much? But still, I got to see legs so I was happy...

Hopefully this happens, I've got a bunch of mates who for their own reasons don't play sc2... but do watch sometimes and are interested in going to a barcraft
Just a quick update. There are a number of good venues in Melbourne CBD but the problem is that they do not have reliable internet connections - low speed DSL, dial up or low band wifi seem to be the norm.
I am still looking for a venue close to the city, but may not be able to host this for the GSL November Finals.
So if you have any suggestions in regards to venue, please let me know by PM and I will investigate.
I can get a good venue - Misty's Diner in Prahran.
Just a few things.
1. I need to check the internet speed
2. Every booth has a personal TV
3. Big screen projector
4. Food - Lots of pig out stuff!
5. Expensive (resturaunt prices, ill see if they can do some barcraft specials)
6. I NEED TO KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE GOING TO GO. Because if i get her to shut the diner down for a night and like 10 people show up, People r gonna be angry, and you're going to be a murderer for killing esports and not coming.
7. Under 18s ARE allowed.
