This months Masters Cup (#8) shall be on Sunday 25th, signups open Monday, however before we do that i'd like to ask for everybody's feedback and ideas on how we can improve.
For those that don't know Masters Cup is a 1v1 single elim tournament, held every 4th Sunday on SEA, sponsored by myself and Sc2sea. We usually gets around 1000 viewers, and 100-150 of the highest quality players in the SEA region. Only Masters + GM's may participate. Prizepool starts at a min $105.
Ro128: (B01 no 2nd game) Ro64: (B01 no 2nd game) Ro32: (B01 no 2nd game) Ro16: (B01 no 2nd game) Ro8: (B03) Semi-Finals: (B03) Finals: (B05)
(3rd Place Match B03)
The day is not negotiable. Its the one afternoon/evening i can do it, and seems to work for most people. Start time has recently been 5pmSGT/7pmAEST. However i am open to starting earlier, but probably only 1 hr would work. This would almost make us go head to head with the ESL however. This doesn't concern me greatly as we are the larger tournament, both in prizepool and players, but i do try and allow for players to participate in both, but if we change time, the choice to play in just one would most likely be required.
If we did start at 4pmSGT/6pmAEST one option could be to make the R32/R16 BO3. I don't think Double elim is the way to go in the time we have available.
The draw for previous Masters Cups has been randomly created via challonge.com. Unfortunately in doing this two 'favourites' may result in playing each other 1st or 2nd round in a BO1 knockout. Is this a big concern? I see four options.
Option 1: Seed players based off previous Masters Cup results.
Option 2: Seed players based off current SEA ladder rankings.
Option 3: I seed the players based upon my own discretion (I actively follow most major online/lan tournament results + ladder form)
Option 4: Continue with random brackets
16 Seeds enough in a 128 player tournament?
Any of the above good? Or something else?
Please post answers in this thread and vote in the poll.
Absolutely love the MAsters Cups you and XanT have been sponsoring and running all this while!
I think the time difference of + / - 1hour doesn't really matter but yea some seeding has to be done for sure! Probably option 2 or 3. Base it on ladder rankings + past tournament results (not just MC) and 16 seeds would be enough. Thats what i did with SEASL Code A haha!
Seeding is the only thing that comes to my mind, whether its based on SEA ladder or recent tourney results - this way we won't get our top/favourite players facing off in the first bracket bo1 games
Its also worth noting that if we did Option 2 (Seed players based off current SEA ladder rankings) going by the current GM ladder atm, players such as NeoRedArchon, TADeth, MoonGlade, YoonYJ aren't in the top 16, yet most would agree they'd be some of the top few players in the region, yet wouldn't get seeded. I guess it would be a reward for laddering.
