I personally use a really expensive set up as i live commentate on console and live stream also.
I use a Audio technica AT2020 XLR with a Alesis USB 4 mixer connected to my recording box for my console. (refer to pic)
I dont recommend headset mics as usually they are pretty horrible.
Desktop wise you can use the same mic (Audio technica AT2020) but the USB version, comes with a stand, order it from amazon, its way cheaper.
Another really good desktop mic is the blue snowball or if you're feeling rich, the blue yeti mic.
Background was a bit noisy so it picked up some static but in a quiet environment and proper audio render settings it should sound crystal clear like this:
I looked into it recently and basically it came down to the Samson c01u vs Blue Yeti as the cheapest Condenser mics.
I managed to find the samson c01u really cheap used on ebay so I just got that and im very happy with it. Managed to get it for $65 but normally its $120 used at least.
I use an AT2020 USB with a stand, pop filter and spider mount. Sound quality is very good and I couldn't be happier. The next step is soundproofing so that I don't constantly capture the doves in my recordings haha.
Edit: I used it at a Diablo LAN to allow all 4 people at my house to communicate with a fifth person over TeamSpeak to play DotA while the Diablo servers were being all error 37's.
Thanks for your help guys I'm going to get the Blue Yeti cos why the f not.
Go hard or go home?
Ordered one for myself with a pop-filter a week ago from the states, hopefully it arrives soon. Damned fine mic have heard a lot of good about it and the audio tests I've heard are pretty sweet.

The world will probably implode if we cast together again both with Yeti mics.. simply won't be able to deal with the quality
I would suggest a decent USB condenser mic for easy setup and use,
there are 3 main models people in commentating use
Blue Snowball - Day9 uses it~
AT-0202
Blue Yeti
If your getting a condenser microphone, you should invest in a shock mount
I use an AT2020, would probably go for a Blue Yeti had I known then what I know now, because the Yeti has a greater range of features. The features the AT2020 has does stack up pretty evenly with the Blue Yeti, but the ability to change aural pattern puts it a step above.
Oh and another thing about the Yeti is, is that it's meant to be used in a controlled environment, so you'll get best results when you're in a soundproof room and such. I use it without soundproofing, or a shock mount, and you can hear cars and stuff in the background quite clearly
