I think its more a case of keep playing and keep winning, not knowing that you have to win X amount of games knowing that the average win percentage of those who get into masters is Y.
But yes, from what I've seen its simply the top 2% of diamond. The leagues percentages of population of players are seperated into:
There are no real minimum requirements to get into the master's league other than be in the top 2% of diamond players.
All that we know is that the top 2% is based of MMR, not your points; which is why friends of mine who were ex-top 200 players before becoming inactive for months (i.e. 1.5k diamond players) were promoted into the master's league after a few games).
there are under 500 players in masterleague on sc2ranks, over 100k accounts.
there are also some players who played 30 games and end up in masterleague
actually there doesn't seem to be a firm baseline.
but generally, the below hold true.
1. when you start playing master league players frequently on ladder, its around time for promotion
2. when your points+bonus pool added together are around or higher than the rank 1 fella in your diamond division, you are also probably gonna to get promoted soon
