As far as real advice goes, the number 1 thing I will recommend focusing on is scv production. It sounds stupid but if you're starting out Terran you need to know that any build you do fails completely if you fail to constantly make scvs. Once you have that then not getting supply blocked, muling consistently, and always making units from your production is the next step to good macro. If you ever get a game that you just didn't know what went wrong and you just got rolled, look to your scv production and you'll see ways to improve.
For Terran specific advice, I'll talk about separate matchups and styles you can play.
TvT
1) Bio - Marine Marauder Medivac. Drop everywhere, take bases like a zerg player, generally be agressive, stay ahead in upgrades
2) Marine Tank - Marine Tank Medivac Viking. Positioning is key, drops are good, you can be agressive or defensive. This is definitely the most common playstyle in TvT at the moment, and can become mass air/tank battles pretty easily.
3) Mech - Hellion Tank Thor. Be defensive until you're maxed, spend your extra minerals on turrets and bases, do run bys with blue flame hellions to kill workers
All of these play styles can move into Air Terran, with battlecruisers banshees vikings and ravens. The ravens use pdd and hunter seeker missle on the enemy vikings, while you try to keep your vikings alive. The battlecruisers are really only there to attack the ground, the vikings are the main damage dealers.
Builds:
1 rax FE, 14 CC, Gas first into banshees, standard 12 rax 13 gas into banshees, standard 12 rax 13 gas into marine hellion medivac attack, proxy marauder
TvP
1) Bio - Marine Marauder Medivac Viking Ghost. You have to be reactive in terms of Protoss tech: get vikings if you see colossi, get ghosts if you see high templar. Late game is very difficult, make sure you pressure with mmm in the early game. The reason late game is so hard for Terran is warp gates, it means if you trade somewhat evenly in an engagement but end up winning, the Protoss can warp in 20 zealots to clean up your army and keep the game going. To actually win you need to absolutely crush their army and their reinforcements, which is done through amazing ghost control. If you actually lose that big engagement, it's just gg. Drops are good, but army control is more important (Spreading your bio, emp HT, position vikings so they can take out colossi)
2) Mech - Hellion Tank Thor Viking Ghost. I don't do this, so I have no idea how it works. I guess hellion run bys are still good, bring scvs for repair with your army.
TvZ
1) Marine Tank - Marine Tank Medivac Viking Marauder. Get vikings for broodlords (ghosts don't counter broodlords any more) and marauders for ultralisks. Always be agressive, either with your army or with drops. If you're going to drop, drop in 2 places, it'll be super effective in gold.
2) Bio - There are some terrans who make bio play work. You have to be very confident in your splitting and kiting, as well as being agressive all the time.
3) Mech - Hellion Tank Thor. It's common to do blue flame attacks, trying to get as many drone kills as possible and then transitioning into mech. Make sure you have turrets in case zerg has mutas, as well as thors. Hellion drops and run bys are very good unless the zerg has put spine crawlers everywhere. Apart from that just think like a mech player and turtle as hard as you can until you have a super army.
Builds: 1 rax fe into blue flame timing/ double banshees/ marauder hellion attack/ reactor hellion banshee (with or without cloak)/ 3 rax and medivacs/ double expo, 2 rax (proxy 11/11 or economical 12/14), 14 cc
Thanks Anti, a lot of helpful info there. I fancy bio play in all three match-ups, what is a good TVZ bio opening build?
I see a few people deterring me from switching to Terran but I feel committed to sticking to this choice but thanks for your concern. Players like TaeJa, Bomber and Boxer inspire me!
The reason I listed a number of viable builds is so you can find the one you like the best, it's really just personal preference. I mean obviously if you want to do bio TvZ don't open with blue flame, it's too much of an investment to transition into bio smoothy. I'd probably pick 1 rax expo into 3 rax and medivacs or 1 rax expo into hellion banshee into 5 more rax.
Anti has more or less told what needs to be told. Though, as a player, I can tell you what are the pros and cons of certain army composition, give you some builds that I find work as well as some tips if you can incorporate them at our level.
MMM is beefier vs Tank fire and allows you to stand toe-to-toe with Mech.
Mass Marine has insane DPS.
Former is not so gas intensive. Latter is close to zero gas req.
Upgrades are quicker
.
Cons
Mass Tank fire is not your friend.
Passiveness is your enemy
Splitting and kiting may be required
Tips
You can get your Medivacs to follow your troops every where by pressing M and then clicking on a unit.
Shift-queuing commands for drops is to be your friend. At this level, multitasking is not at its highest ie. you can't be looking at everywhere and doing everything needed at the same time. This saves you the grief.
Floating minerals? Slap another two or three Raxes. Its okay when you can't produce out of them. Better ready than caught with your pants down.
Once the Mech machine rolls out, its a slow grind unless something wrong happens.
Chunky, beefy and really tough at times to take down.
Cons
Gas intensive
Immobile at worst, slow at best
Drop prone
Any units lost will take a long time to rebuild
Said to be multitasking intensive
Tips
Be extremely cost efficient. Emphasis on the extremely cost efficient part.
Shift-queuing makes another appearance.
Trouble with drops? Build a Turret Ring or have a 3-4 Vikings patrolling air routes to your base.
Map control and vision is a must.
Must be on top of upgrades. You want maximum damage, minimum casualties.
See an unguarded base? Punish it by killing all the workers or shelling it. You either force a lift, force the army to move to engage and take losses or even take out the base itself.
Be extremely cost efficient.
vs
Build/s recommended - 1Rax FE :: 2Rax Conc Pressure
I don't have a standard style and still manage to stay in gm..the key here is macro! The best part of being Terran is that u can win with almost any build as long as your macro is good.
If you are starting out as terran i reckon you should go marine tank as your main army compo against terran and zerg because its the easiest and standard. Also, dont be afraid to use scans if you are unsure on what the opponent is doing. scans are good . those builds you are working on are good on building your fundamentals of terran. against zerg try 1 rax fe -hellion banshee - marine/tank
