[ZvZ] Australian Builds

Gday guys.

I'm kinda new to following the Australian scene, I've generally just watched GSL in the past, but am getting really excited about the completely different meta that seems to be going on at the top level in Australia.

I heard mention at WCS of a Targa build, I'm assuming named after Kristoffer Marthinsen who I wouldn't have known from a bar of soap eight weeks ago. However I haven't been able to find this build.

Also I heard Livi Bee mention a build when she was casting PiG who was playing in IEM Cologne, I didn't understand what she was calling the build, but she was able to recognise the opening and her co-caster was completely unfamiliar with it. Kinda felt cool that us Aussies have our own builds up our sleeves.

Anyway. I am actually struggling with ZvZ at the moment, and was hoping to track down some of these "secret" Aussie builds to add to my arsenal. Is there somewhere that keeps track of our builds? Could I get replays of some high lvl Aussie ZvZ? Or could someone please tell me what the Targa build actually is?

Cheers.

Jerry! that's it.
Thanks guys.

Builds are a lot simpler than I imagined.

I've done the whole hidden lings before, didn't know it had a name, any idea where the name jerry comes from?

Targa build is a bit anticlimactic, but cheers.

Haven't really added to my arsenal, but at least I know what people are talking about now.

Jerry build originally was hatch gas pool into mass speedling now it has evolved into pretty much any build where you hide mass ling in your base then just attack when speed finishes... most common with pool gas hatch to trick people into thinking youre just doing standard pool hatch gas

None of the top level sea zergs would be open to share their builds, especially in ZvZ lol

Most likely the reason you're struggling with the matchup is cause of how volatile it is, it's more micro intensive than the other matchups and thus makes it probably the worst matchup for every zerg player.

So it's not just you struggling at it, I think all zerg players are because of the constant coin flips

I dont think you are understanding the amount of banes you make here. Its like 20-30, bonus man points if you morph them right in his face.

Targa bane build is 20+ banes from 2 gas (although I've seen some players opt for a 3rd gas) designed to hit someone who is trying to delay their warren. Counter it by getting a warren. There are a few replays from ACL sydney of him doing it. You can see how effective it was early on in the tournament, and then later, I think he and pig played on stage and you can see pig live through it by getting a warren. Should also be a glade vs targa one (glade wins) from memory.

Jerry build is originally, 15 hatch and non stop speedlings from 15 drones.

I saw mOOnGLaDe do it. His opponent (I can't for the life of me remember his name) built 9 evo chambers that game.

Thanks guys.

I'll have to find the replays for the Targa build, it just seems a little uncomfortable the way you guys discribe it. Otherwise I might just try screwing around on a second early gas and see what I can make of it. I'm sensing to hit before warren I'd want my second geyser down by 15 with three in it. I'd scout deep with my first set of lings, and if there's no warren yet, then I have the option of going Targa, otherwise if he has a warren, I'd respond with my own, and at that stage, I'd pull some back out of gas and go into roach play?? Maybe early lair and start banking for faster infestor or faster burrow?

I think it's best I find the replays, it's just not making sense in my head. I can't justify a second gas early without a clear plan.

@LaughingMan: Dude, I'd be super psyched for any new ZvZ play styles, I need to mix things up as my mates are starting to read my plays.

@Santi: What do you mean? Are you talking about cannon rushing a zergs main mineral line? Is that an Aussie thing? I've never seen it and wouldn't have thought it would be very easy to pull off. Very map dependant as you can't often build there.

I believe Targa said there was 3 or more different paths to his end results. A "standard one" which is "unexpected" all in. A more passive one that is harder to see coming but does less damage how ever has a chance to be backed out of to a different transition. Also a hyper aggressive one that is super crazy bane train as all in as it gets.

It was given the name Targa banes because if unknown to the player it is next to impossible to stop and he wrecked quite a few people before counters where perfected (which range from amazing micro to solid macro paths with scouting). Hence why he was credited with it.

A few tricks to remember which can also be good for standard baneling, always split lings before morphing. Que actions to morphing banelings dont hold back. Banelings march 2 by 2 unless you know they dont have banelings to counter with (keep this in mind when giving way points). Final trick is if your going deeper into their base (drone kills) try to path near where if you are killed you still do damage (past lava for example).

Keep in mind Boarvolk9 the Targa banes is 95-98% all in if your not use to crazy plays like that it is about as uncomfortable as they come also you will likely be called cheesy for using it in lower leagues.

For the targa banes u can find some vods (game 1 and 2 I think) of it from the targa vs sheth series from nasl, it doesn't kill sheth from memory but u just copy his build and then execute and you'll find if u split the banes well you will crush tons of players.

EDIT" the jerry build was popularised by Jerry, a Chinese (I think?) who was top 16 consistently and would all in you constantly. basically hiding lings and then attacking you when speed is done.

Tbh I dont think there are really any different builds at SEA top level than anywhere else in the world (or at least, not greatly different). What does go on is mind games because every top player hits every other top player in every tournament. There arent "secret" builds - just every day builds have been given new names dependint on who popularised them within our region. Targa banes = bane bust. Jerry build = hidden mass ling.

To find replays you can look on this website's uploaded replays, however you won't find much in the way of zvz at the tip top level as mafia mentioned since players dont want to reveal their styles to each other in case they need to face off in a tournament at some point. Youre just as well off looking at games from any other pro players which have more accessible replays.
