Hi, i'm Benji, Manager of Xeria Gaming and Starcraft 2 commentator. Kingston sent me out one of their latest products, The Kingston HyperX 8GB (4x2GB) ram to take a look at and review.
One of the biggest issues with PC gaming is keeping your hardware up to date. If your computer cannot support whatever game you are trying to play then you are hindering yourself and your ability. If you're playing on 10 fps, its painful and frustrating to play with, and you need to get out there and upgrade your hardware so you can play to your full potential. RAM is one of the easiest things to upgrade in most computers, it is usually as easy as taking out the old ram, plugging in the new RAM and turning your computer on, not only this but it is one of the parts that really can effect the performance of your game, and the ability to run multiple programs at the same time.
The same applies for streaming, its all the rage these days but anyone on a medium level PC will tell you that once you've turned on your stream, you will get lower FPS and whilst it is playable, its nowhere near as fast or smooth as it is without the stream. I obviously stream a lot and when I upgraded my computer this year I made sure I upgraded from 4GB of RAM to 8GB and I noticed the difference.
When you're picking RAM, you will most likely have a choice between many products and brands, This 8GB kit from Kingston is a very solid choice. Kingston for starters are one of the most respected brands in the RAM business, they have been creating quality products for many years. This 8GB kit is no exception. It is designed with gaming in mind and having 4 sticks of 2 gig each works very efficiently by using quad channels instead of single channels or dual channels like smaller kits would. The RAM is also covered by a heat spreader, when a computer is on it generates a lot of heat and having this spreads the heat over a larger area, protecting it from heat damage as well as giving your computer fans a larger surface area to cool it down.
If you're serious about gaming and your computer is running a little slow, have a look at your RAM first as its a very important part of your machine, and is the easiest and one of the cheapest parts to upgrade. Have a serious look at Kingston's gear, their quality is of the highest standard and with your computer you want it to be of the highest quality so it is dependable and you aren't crashing mid game. If you buy a quality product you're going to have to replace it less often and you will get the most out of it. A small side note, make sure you are running 64bit Windows, 32bit does not support any more than 4GB of ram even if you have 8GB (or more) plugged in.
this stuff will not work in a laptop, you need special laptop memory for that. Also starcraft is not a particularly memory intensive application so your current 4GB is not what's causing the low FPS, rather it is the graphics processor (which is likely on-board) and the CPU, turn all your graphics settings down to the lowest level and see if that makes a difference although laptops in general just suck for gaming i'm afraid
Any chance of testing how well it overclocks ? I would not mind an 8GB kit.
I'm happy to give it a go, but I'll need instructions as I'm not 100% confident on overclocking RAM :P Haven't had the need for it, never had any latency on this computer, even with Xsplit, FRAPS and SC2 all running.
