@fullstop : clans and teams are different... clans are more social than teams, teams are sort of your sponsors and stuff... so most of the players in SEA that are in teams have clans... most of the xGKing guys were / are from nGen, the ARCMSi guys are mostly / all from TA.

I'm sponsored by Tt but I am not part of a team. Tt only have 2 players in my circumstances and the other 1 is whitera.

But yeah what souljah said. Clans are how players improve. Alot of Korean players are in clans like NSP, Nex and Zenith. When they get to a certain point of skill they are often invited to NShoseo or Zenex respectively. These are the sponsored teams where the guys live in houses training all day! But if we didn't have unsponsored social groupings (clans) then it would be harder for the new talent that isn't quite ready for sponsorship to get practice with the established players.
