In my opinion an important factor that leads someone to win the game is his attitude during the game. With that statement I do not mean that a bronze level player with perfect attitude can win against a grand master . My point is when two players of approximately same level of skill-sets and abilities are in the game, the player with more tranquil mindset often has an upper hand.
The aim of this thread is to provide new low level players some tips to get better in all respect of the game.
No doubt one has to learn the game, increase the apm, make innovative strategy etc, but in parallel to this if one also master the art of controlling his temperament during the game it will help in long term to become better in star craft.
Please post you comment to improve the thread topic and bring some more essence to help the reader for his improvement.
true, I believe that starting a game with a mind set like: oh no I'm going to lose, will just make you play too safe, aka not expanding fast enough, too much photon cannons, bunkers etc and no pressure on opponent. Doing this will definitely give the opponent a very easy win, and also making the losing more embarrassing because of all the mistakes that you realize after that.
When I first started playing way back in Starcraft Broodwar, I would get anxiety right before the game and looking back I think it really hinders my play alot. I would overreact, and my hands would get all shaky and I can't play very well. I think what helped me is that to think that it's only a game, losing would not matter and I can only learn from it, that's when the anxiety started to go away.
Bottomline : Play with a rational mind, don't let emotions overwhelm

same here! few months back when I was playing a guy and I found he was gold player.... my hands were shaking and I was building photon cannons in front of his base at about 8 or 10 mins in!
I personally think its a skill that will progress over time from bronze to gm, just like macro and micro. Its more important in tournaments, but you can clearly see how calm a lot of higher level players are at very high levels of play. You dont want your emotions causing you to make bad decisions.
I don't exactly focus on what's happening at the time but what I want as an end result. Sure there's things I have to deal with along the way but I don't get tunnel vision. I think the game as a whole.
