Dealing with Losses

Hello readers ,
i'm having a hard time dealing with my losses.
Whenever i lose , my confidence went lower and i just seeing myself doing everything wrong.
And as i lose the game , i can't play another game because of the nerve.
Please tell me what is the best way to deal with losses.

Sounds like you have the Noodle/riiChard Syndrome.

The way I deal with it is that I start watching streams or watch pro replays and learn new builds which then motivates me to try it on ladder/custom games. Most of the time I don't watch my own replays as I absolutely hate losing but more recently I've been watching them and always found that "Oh... I don't actually lose by that much... If only I did this better or built this sooner". The fact that I'm constantly learning from my losses as well as my wins makes me keen to play more and more.

So my final opinion. Think of a happy place and hit that damn search button!

I used to have this problem as well.. What I found that helped me was to just go on NA and ladder. Ladder ladder ladder. Don't stop until you play say, 15 games (10 if you don't have time) every day for a week. I guarantee you will get hit by every single cheese/rush/all-in under the sun. Lose to them all. Just play and don't let your emotions get the better of you, no matter how retarded your opponent seems.
When you lose, watch the replay, find out what you missed when you played. Pick one thing, and make a concious effort the next game to really work on it. It's the only mindset you can have if you want to improve.
Playing for ladder points is a terrible mentality. It only sets you up for disappointment (Laddering all day only to find that you have lost points is disheartening!)

Remember that the only way to get better is when you lose. This lets you pinpoint the weaknesses in your game, and allows improvement when you correct them!

i concur with cosmic. everytime im on a losing streak, i just jump onto NA or an account i dont care about and get my groove back. dont play for the ladder points... play to improve.

If you're on losing streak often times jumping in to team games and just messing around can help you find that spark back. Or you could just take a break and go outside That sometimes helps me

I suspect fear of losing has a cognitive foundation, based on protection of the ego. (Perhaps a psychology major will jump in here and clarify/correct this.)

I think we all have a certain internal perception of our abilities (that we are "good", "skillful", "intelligent" etc). Losing games directly challenges these comfortable perceptions, and cause a crisis of the ego. We have to directly face the fact that our internal perception of our own abilities may not match up with external experience.

The people who improve are those who realise they weren't as good as they thought they were, analyse their mistakes and work on improving their game. The people who don't improve are those who retreat from losses and nurse their bruised ego or only play people below their skill level etc, thus protecting comfortable assumptions about their abilities.

To the OP, the fact that losses hurt you at least suggests you recognise that your external performance may not be matching your internal perception of your abilities. The question is, where do you go from here? Will you retreat into your shell, or will you get back out there and lose, regardless of how this may bruise your ego? What is the best way to deal with a loss? I think Chopper sums it up nicely: "harden the **** up". You're going to lose, and there's no nice way to handle a bruised ego, so just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and keep going. Lets put it another way - omg I just lost a game of Starcraft 2, my world is ending. Sound likely to you?

Just make sure when you lose, you don't lose the lesson.

I kinda have a similar problem, but in the reverse way,I get scared to play when I'm winning, I look at my match history, and count the wonderful shiny cups, and I'm scared of the possibility of a skull sitting in between them. Whn I start to lose, I'm like whatever...and start to cheese a lot(mostly 4gate, but I make it....really really obvious), and just lose more lol, it's probably better to just stop playing when your on a losing streak, take a break and watch streams..or obs some matches with clan people, then come back and play. Watching streams reminds me that everyone has a 50/50 win ratio, and even pros lose to no names, and also motivate me to try to do the cool stuff the do.

Tom mate, would you stop mentioning terms about cognitive and Piaget !

But one thing what Tom said is true (I know, he is not much of a motivator eh?) "Just make sure when you lose, you don't lose the lesson. "

I remember old SC1 days, your nick record your winning record AS WELL AS your losses, if you go into those korean channel, you see people with like 3k losses and 1k wins, but if you try to beat them? I don't think so, and that reinforce Tom's saying, don't lose the lesson. Going back to the old saying "record means s**t."

So I stop my lessoning here, but if i were you, i will go play another game, try that same cheese/strat to another guy, see how he respond, or play a different race, or play a team game with your friend, or just go fap and sleep (as Tom will never admit himself!).

p.s. where has Nathan been, Tom?!

@OP: Everyone gets like that, it's just a natural feeling when playing a competitive 1v1 game and it takes a while of playing to be able to play in the right mindset where the things that you listed wont bother you (as much).

Have a read of this TL article, it's what helped me back when I was fearful of laddering and losing.

More importantly, gl-hf ^-^

If I lose a few times in a row I generally have a break and don't ladder for the rest of the day, because after the first few losses I feel as if I'm only playing to make up for the points I've lost and then usually lose some more. Even if I've lost a bunch in a row, I just chuck on music - have a positive approach and remember that I have every opportunity that the opponent has, just need to make sure I do the smarter decisions.

I found that my frustration went away once I accepted I was going to lose, and lose a lot. I started to use every loss as a tool to improve and I now don't really mind if I lose ladder games.

losing is part of sc2. I find that I lose a game, I take some time to chill from sc2, hit the sc2sea site to chat, watch my replays to see when did the shit hit the fan (quite often lol), watch tv, watch some vods/livestreams/pro replays and hop on to either a team game or a custom with my friends (who will stomp all over me but with hilarious ways XD).

just think that losing is a way to say, "ok, you're doing everything great but it's time to step up your game and add more mechanics to it."

glhf and if you need, add me so we can have a few random games just for the lol-s

i also had this problem. when i first started starcraft 2 i played team games and played my placement matches for 1v1 and then stop because i would get too nervous and my heart rate would go crazy and every time i lose i get the worse feeling and id think about it for a few hours and then id stop playing for a few weeks but now after a year of playing team games and losing a tonne of games i got used to the fact that you cannot win every game you play and losing only teaches you what you can do better. the only time you should be angry for losing a game is when your internet disconnects when you are winning....
