I'm trying to expand into some good builds that I can implement into my game. However, I've been told I can pretty much 4gate until gold. Does this seem to be the case?
Would anyone be able to provide me with some good builds that will help me to move up to the next rank?
Kind regards,
Marzy

haha I just realised it was you I gave the coaching session, my bad =D, well the offer still stands.
To answer your question 4gate will only take you so far. In the higher leagues it's good versus protoss and relatively ineffective against the other two races by comparison. I've said this before though, good macro will take you out of bronze league rather quickly.
For the time being focussing on just one build will allow you to learn some of the finer details such as micro and mechanics. Even I still stick to one of a few different builds per race.
As I'm plat my comments are obviously less informed but at the higher levels I suppose it comes down to how it is implemented more than what the build is.
1. Make probes constantly (until 3 bases full of saturation.)
2. Make 2 or 3 gateways
3. Constant zealot production
4. Expand when you get 400 minerals (you may need to stop zealot production for a couple of seconds in order to afford the nexus)
5. Repeat.
if you are ever floating too much money just build some more gateways for more zealots.
The most important things are to have constant worker production and to keep your money low.
Edit: @ Acies: no; three bases optimally - max saturated. (around 16-20 * 3 + 6*3 (gas))
I'd really urge you to stay away from 4-gating. The major reason behind this is anything that is all-in (or meant to be all in at the very least) doesn't really promote a full learning experience of the game.
The best thing to do at low levels is expose yourself to as many situations as possible. What would be amazing is if you learnt how to 1-gate expand in PvT, Forge Fast Expand in PvZ and 3-Gate Robo in PvP - however, that's likely going to be a bit of a mental overload.
3-Gate Robo is your best bet. It teaches you how to build probes, it lets you experience collosus - what more could you want?
(When I first started sc2, I 3gate robo'ed from bronze to gold and it was easy to do. I learnt very quickly as protoss - not to put the race down but in the lower leagues, the focus on a 'deathball' really gives you a lot more margin for error)
Newbie here. Where can i find a detailed build order for 3 gate robo? cant seem to find it.
Thanks

Many thanks, I am currently playing 2v2 with a friend who is playing as terran. From what I have read this is pretty solid build to learn - although we do lose a lot to PvP matchs ups, usually with cannon rushes! grrr.
I'm one for 4 gating in bronze league, people say it doesn't help with macro, but it does, you have to keep you minerals low, and avoid supply blocks, and have half decent unit control, start small and work up, if you can't get to silver off a strong 1 base all in timing then there is areas that really should be first before steping up the difficulty by adding more bases and units.
you should be able to keep minerals below 300-400 (except before warp in's) rarely get supply blocked and have warp gate finished before 5:45 every game.
at that point you will be silver and have better mechanics to do the different builds.
The only other build that would be decent is a stalker heavy 3 gate robo opening because off all the weird, and bs mass void type builds that happens in bronze league,
4 gating bypasses that because of how fast it hits if done right.

If you can build a metric shit-tonne more units then you opponent then it really doesn't matter about unit control. Lower leagues Macro is more important then Micro imo

@Bourkes I can't see there being much of a difference between macroing of 1 base as appose to 3. You just have to build more gateways and tech structures, hole the 'E' button for probes just a little bit longer, and build more units just a little bit more. Saying that you should learn to macro of 1 and then move up seems stupid to me because you just get more money and build more stuff. It's not exactly but it's really close to being the same.
I personally would recommend fast expand builds. I feel like it gets you in a better position mid-late game. If you can scout there cheese/all-in before it happened (if it does) then you are in a great spot

Currently a build that I'm practicing to get it perfect is 2gate robo then expand, for PvP matchup. For a PvZ matchup, I would build a pylon at my natural then scout what they have, pool at 13 i think , i'll make a forge first then drop a nexus at 16. If I see a hatch first, I'll drop Nexus @ 16.
If you're Bronze and really looking for a good way to approach improving correctly and properly I 100% suggest you start watching dApollo's protoss tutorials. He showcases games starting all the way from the Bronze League of SC2 up until around Diamond with protoss. Along the way he'll cover a lot of the timings and build orders you need to improve correctly!

Many thanks I will be sure to check this out.
One other point, on the link for that robo build it has numbers in brackets after them for example Plyon(3) - does this mean build 3x Pylons?seems a bit excessive http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/3_Gate_Robo

dApollo's tutorials are very good for every race. I still watch them and I have seen them about 4 each for Terran and when I played Protoss.. highly recommended

I think it would be better if you learnt at least one basic build for each match-up. It's not a great deal more work, and you've also built yourself up better for when you attempt to enter into a higher league.

That means the third pylon you build. So you first gateway is Gateway (1)

Here is my general build order that should help if you work on your mechanics and macro
pvt -
9 pylon
11 chronoboost
12 gate and scout
14 gas
Heres the important part from what you scout decides what you should do. heres a few handy things that should help you on your quest for glory.
If you scout a no gas terran at this time he is most likely doing a 1 rax expand. you here have 2 options go 4 gate and try to kill him (this is all in) or expand yourself. You MUST do one of the other.
If you scout a gas terran he is doing one of a few things. going for a 2 rax maruder marine attack/ a 3 rax marine maruder attack/ or the 1/1/1. to this you have a few options you can proxy a stargate (useful on close spawns) and do a 3 gate void ray attack/expand and drop 2 gates straight after then take gas then drop a robo (note banshee with clock timing is 7:30 at the fastest) or 4 gate and try to kill him. You MUST do either one.
Also for saving your probe get him out before 3:05 because that should be when the first marine pops. Another helpful thing if he supply depo blocks you he doesn't have gas. The reasoning for me there is refinery costs 75 minerals supply depo 100. I'm sure you can see how I reached that deduction.
Now with the gas timing you may say "But how do i tell if its a rax attack(2/3 rax) or a 1/1/1???" well lucky for you i have some little things i do to help you on your way. heres some neat little things i've found :-
Reactor for a rax attack terrans make a tech lab you see a reactor its most likely 1/1/1.
This also leads into counting the marines. if you send your first zealot to attack and rally your stalker to meet him as he gets there you can count marines 4 = an expand 5 = reactor aka 1/1/1
This should get you the intel you need to react. From here you ahve options if he doesn't take gas and you have expanded and go upto 3 gates and a robo just probes and pylons and figure out your own way to play .
If he is doing a 1/1/1 heres my advice. You see a banshee drop a stargate and get phenox out to combat it and dw about your ground force just keep probes and pylons and then add up to 5 gates. If you see tanks or a tech lab on the factory add immortals.
If he is doing a tank bio 1/1/1 such as the 2/1/1 5 gate robo works best.
Now I'll leave you with one more solid piece of information if you don't want to fight simply don't you have forcefields. If you have questions feel free to ask il check this thread soonish but busy week coming up
