As you may know I ran City Hunter's 11th Pro SCII event over the weekend (and our 3rd low tier event),due to an extended holiday I am taking and an already busy schedule Ive decided to halt the regular tournaments for a couple months.
With that in mind I have a few idea on how I want to run the events in the future.
1) Cash Instead of JBHIFI Gifts Cards- I believe I have found a solution, essentially "I" will run the events not City Hunter, so instead of paying City Hunter you either pay me via paypal or on the day
2) Two Comps instead of one!- Running the BSG/PD event alongside the "Invite" event seemed to work well, Im proposing to run a " and Below Comp" and a " and Comp"
3) Now heres the part I want some input For prize breakdown Im proposing something unique, I combine all the entry fees (lets say $300 for this example) then Giving the / a majority of the Prize Money, Im considering 1st-50%, 2nd-25%, 3rd-10%,
With the remaining 15% I want to use that money to Purchase coaching off s such as PiG, Iaguz and yang to use as prizes for the " and Below" comp (perhaps 2 hours for 1st and 1 hour for 2nd), the " and Below" Comp will also include shop credit and some other little goodies like Usbs, SDs and maybe some RAM, If I manage to have cash I dont really want it as part of the lower league comp I want prizes that smurfs do not want
4) Frequency- Im considering making these approximately every two months!
5) Helpers- Next season I want to encourage other people to jump on board and help, two things I would really like help with is some who could do a write up after the event and someone to take photos, If anyone is interesting in gaining some experience running comps I dont mind giving some training!
The major reason for this is that I want the rest of the world to know how awesome SEA events are, Id love to do it all myself but I am one man and I know there are others out there who can do a better job than me
6) Stream Im fairly happy with the the format our stream uses (Benji + Pros co casting) but happy to hear advice to improve on this!
7) Format Depending on the sign ups Im thinking " and Below" Will have group stage into a Semi Final Bracket and / be standard Double Elim, happy to hear thoughts thogh
8) Entry Fee- Happy with $10, how would you feel about the / being raised to $15 so there more money in the kiddy?
Anyway thats about all, any advice / opinions are welcome (feel free to PM if you are uncomfortable replying here)
And for those interested Results of all Tournaments to date are below
I really like the idea that you're segregating the two divisions as it serves two very important purposes for the guys who aren't or -
1) It gives them a better fighting chance so they don't just get crushed 0-6 or 2-4 in their group stages each time.
2) It gives them a clearly defined target - they'll aspire to reach the higher division and take a swing at the top guys.
Glad to hear there will be some cash coming on board too.

After we move, if I'm able (no idea what'll be happening with working etc at this stage) I'd be happy to have a go at helping run things...
I really like these new ideas that youre thinking of implementing.
Raising the price to $15, isnt too big of an increase and will also make the prizes better. So thats not too bad.
Also yeah, run two competitions. Gives us noobs a chance!
In my opinion, these ideas will help attract more people to the tournament aswell and create a bigger Australian Esports scene!
Another idea, is you could print out some posters and what not. And see if you can get some advertising going in internet cafe's around sydney.
I'd also would like to have a go at helping out. I'd be down for taking photos.

Unfortunately advertising in other cafes isnt really an option since they are competitors! but I agreed I need to work on promoting this event to a wider audience, of course the best form of promotion is word of mouth perhaps some kind of incentive (like a little giveaway, nothing huge, a badge, magnet, shirts etc) for people who bring a friend?
Great point!

Personally I like the idea of purchasing coaching with some of the prize pool off Pig, Iaguz etc.
The tournaments provide two great things, firstly entertainment and secondly support to the guys who are most likely going to win to further their 'career' and focus more on playing if thats what they want to do.
Getting coaching off them is providing more income for them so I'm all for it, also great for the lower league guys who want to improve.
I love the ideas for these tournaments chris, esp for the lower league ones. It was really fun to play on sunday and not just get 6-0'd haha. We had some really epic games also.
Coaching prizes are a great idea, as you said, there wont just be smurfs trying to win good stuff and itll put some money in the pocket of the pro guys. Have to rope Light in for coaching as there P/D bracket was mostly protoss haha.
Maybe advertise at barcraft or somewhere to the Tier 4 Seacl players, as there would be a lot of P/D guys around who dont frequent the site too much.

I agree with coaching prizes making a lot of sense... Practical and fun and doesn't encourage smurfing the way that cash prizes would.
And this last point is something I really agree with... there are plenty of people out there that attend barcrafts, but don't even know about big events like ACL. The boys at APL have really got their marketing of events down. I would love to see more people in Sydney trying to get them involved even if just to get them to announce more of the other sc2 events in Sydney on their facebook page (provided there are no conflicts of interest here I'm unaware of).
I think you are doing a great job and hopefully with the help of some others to run the tournaments, do write-ups and take photos would be great!
A few points: Please write up a "cityhunter planning document" or checklist if you don't have one already so that you remember to do all these suggestions! You're only human so it will be easy to forget!
* Make a facebook event for each tournament and ask people to share it! Also post this in the Sydney collegiate starcraft group which will guarantee more attendees at events!
* the writeups and photos recapping is a great idea
* I like splitting the divisions and would be glad to pay $5 extra but as a strong contendor ofc this is the case for me. Nonetheless the bigger the cash prize the more it grabs peoples eyes!
* Stream and format are fine imo
The seats! Don't let the players sit in racing cars! T_T (change them!) Especially when half of the players are in the different rooms, its so hard to play from the position of a racing chair than it is from one of the other seats (from my experience when i was there)
oh this might be a little obscure or not make sense, but maybe some sort of system where people cant go have lunch until they have played up to a certain place in the brackets. there were a few instances where people came over an hour late, jumped in, played 1 round then went to lunch, which left another player waiting for a really long time to play again (generally seemed to be high levels waiting for lower levels).
might be unavoidable and part of the tournament format, but just a though.

LoL unfortunately the seats are someone I cant control, yes you went to City Hunter Kingston Comp #2 at Burwood (which was also ACL Regional #1?) this was the only time Ive ever had people spread out so far, Burwood has since had its B section updated (those you came to CH King Comp #6 can attest to this), definitely something to keep in mind for the future I learnt from that experience!

This was a serious issue, I need to be firmer on this in the future, its the delicate balance between being friends with a person but still needing to be a dick when admin duties require me to, hopefully having 2 smaller comps will allow the scheduling to be a little easy the manage.

During a coaching session with me, you will be sure that I will use the word Fantastic at every opportunity I can use an adjective, but I will also be using the word as nouns, verbs and adverbs at every opportunity to ensure you customers, a Fantastic Fantastic.
Will wait for my business call.

looks good - perhaps the big baller GMs could offer to offset their entry fees, say - have free entry to the M/GM event if they offer coaching to the winner of the P/D event...?
