A innovative Bunker placement by Jinro

It might be more common that I think but I have never seen it anywhere personally.

The depot protect the ramp, the SCV, the wall of the main.

Click the image to open in full size.

The bunker is really well protected by :
  • Cliff
  • Ramp
  • Mineral
  • 2 depots
Zerglings can't really attack it with any efficiency. It's not so easy for roaches and even banelings can't hit it easilly. Plus there is still room behind for SCV to repair.

1 tank can be placed on the cliff and protect the whole defensive area without being exposed itself.

I found that depot placement very cost efficient especially early game when you can't wall quickly all your Natural ramp.

You surrender the natural ramp but when you think about it, it's not really the vital zone you want to protect, it's more the main ramp, the Natural and the depot itself. The Natural wall as we know is very susceptible to busts because it's very large.

It's been done before in the GSL by players like MVP mainly against zergs and even Startale.Bomber. Generally, it's done when players do quick 3rd CCs and needs a good protection against fast splings. However, this placement is also weaker against really early roach banes all in where you would like staggered bunkers from ramp to ramp. By early, I mean before siege.

But yes! This is still an awesome bunker placement! Thank you Nemo

Yep, but you can make another bunker or two in front of this one if you smell an all-in coming. It means you don't wall off the ramp in front of your other bunkers too early though, but if you weaken them enough before they hit this bunker you'll still hold.

Biggest drawback (imo) is a lack of surface area to repair against a few roaches in your nat.

As a terran player myself, i must say the bunker placement is not ideal.
My reason are as follows:
1)It is in a bad position to defend againts early roach rush.
Roach can actually force your CC/OC to lift as your bunker wont be able to hit back in that place.
2)A few ling up the ramp can totally reveal your tech.
This is bad esecially when they see your factory or starport with tech add on.
3)It reveal your scv count at the Natural expansion.
More Scv meant less production at early game.

Thus,i favor a straight wall off the natural ramp.
P.s:I am really a terran player.
Thank you

Wouldn't that be a bad spot for a bunker at opposing base? Could just shoot you from cliff above and you'd have no vision...?

Unless that was an inside-joke or something, in which case disregard

what if they just go to the left and be out of range of the bunker with roaches? they get free hits on the cc or scvs and you don't really have a way of dealing with it except if you had enough siege tank numbers to leapfrog or enough marines to die cost inefficiently. that is my view on things as on this map they can just not go anywhere near the main ramp and still snipe stuff, then again i could be totally wrong so feel free to correct me.

It's a early game defense or urgent defense in case of runby later. In both case you lift your CC and put it back in your main to use the mules. For the SCV you send them around the bunker to repair or around it and them in hold position to avoid zerglings to hit it or to limit roaches access to it.

It's purpose is to give you time to muster more heavy defenses if you're taken by surprise by a early rush or a late runby.

Bunker positions like this are pretty good in TvZ right now since a common reaction to 1 rax FE is to mass speeds and do something gay. But if they go roaches then I feel this position hurts you, despite how sweet it is vs lings and banes, because it's very hard to avoid getting your scvs shot up as you dance around and away from the bunker, repairing it when it's hurt and darting back when the scvs are getting shot instead. If it was roach ling then it'd be fine to cram all your scvs in that tiny area since sure you're gonna lose a bunch of SCV's but he's doing a big silly all in so w/e.

However you choose to place that bunker, make sure it's very close to your scvs! You have a tiny amount of time to get them around and repairing before speedlings can surround it and that is the difference between victory and defeat.

Again in MLG that sort of Bunker placement was used by Dream to defend a one rax expo. It has shut up completely the 10 lings that Idra has made.

It's becoming trendy it seems.

Interesting placement I've never placed my Bunker there. Protects against lings and banes effectively. But people seem worried about roach pressure. What I've seen in TvZ I mean atleast the games I have played on ladder and seen some pro VODs two base roach timings are really only used against a protoss. I'm new to the scene so I might be mixing up these comps.

The other thing to note here is scouting info. I feel like with the new queen buff where Zerg players are able to deny the scouting SCV within the main the terran should be able to check the drone and zergling count to determine a two base roach attack is incoming. I mean for lower league players like myself could just burn off a scan to double check and just get a healthy mix of maurders and tanks.

So I think the bunker placement is better because it stops speedling early attacks and you should be able to scout a two base roach attack and prepare accordingly.

It's not ideal but worth using on that map which is a bastard to get a good bunker on.

Thanks!
