We're excited to bring you an update regarding Blizzard's new eSports competition: the StarCraft II World Championship Series. The series consists of prize tournaments in nearly every part of the world that will bring players from all over the globe together to compete like never before.
ACL is proud to confirm that we will be working closely with Blizzard ANZ to bring you most of the qualifier events as well as the live National and Oceanic Final event later in the year where the best Starcraft 2 Players will be decided.
It all starts with the National Qualifiers, where players (maybe even you!) will battle it out for a chance to prove their mettle and qualify for the National Finals. The top players from each country will then compete in their regional Finals. From there, winners will earn the right to fight in the StarCraft II World Championship Series, where they’ll strive to win amazing prizes and the title of World Champion. We’ll have more details to share about this tournament in the very near future.
If you’re keen to be part of the action, join one of the eligible qualifiers for the Nationals listed below, and go head to head against others from your country. We'll be sharing further information on how to sign up as the event dates approach, so check back often for your chance to join.
Q: How are the spots distributed? A: ACL Regionals (2 each), ACL Melbourne Nationals (4), Perth RF LAN (1), Perth Barcraft Star League (1), APL Online (2)
Q: What about New Zealand? A: NZ have their own series of events and details will be available very soon. (Along with Asia)
Q: What is the Map Pool for the National/Global event? A: WCS_Daybreak LE, WCS_Ohana LE, WCS_Cloud Kingdom LE, WCS_Metropolis LE, WCS_Antiga Shipyard, Tal’darim Altar LE, WCS_Entombed Valley & WCS_Shakuras Plateau.
All maps have been modified to include neutral supply depots at the bottom of the ramp, gold bases removed, and forced cross-spawns as necessary.
Q: Will ALL of the qualifying events use the aforementioned maps? A: These maps are recommended, but the final decision comes down to the host of each individual qualifier.
Q: What can you tell us about the finals? A: It'll be in front of a live audience with a capacity of 330 seated guests.
Q: Will participants receive flights and accommodation to the finals in Sydney? A: Yes.
Q: Will there be prizes at the qualifiers? A: In addition to WCS seeds, flights, accommodation and cash, some Wings of Liberty Collectors Editions will also be awarded.
Q: How will sound-proofing be addressed at the finals? A: Soundproof booths will be provided for broadcasted matches.
So 4 people from the final event go overseas? Chad's saying 5 in chatbox.
MECONFUSE
Chad followed it up by saying 1 spot is for NZ
Heres a question though
will all the qualifiers have equal seeds to the finals? (8 events so 2 a piece?) or will states with larger populations and in some cases higher caliber of players be given more seeds in their qualifiers?

So keen for what this means is available for the future of sc2 esports worldwide.

I'm out of town till Tuesday night; replies might be a tad scarce. I'll check in on my phone every now and then and do what I can to respond to questions!
It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle.

Question: Will the majority of the qualifications rely on you going to your states specifics LANs?
Not sure I understand the question entirely. You can enter any qualifier, and as many qualifiers as you like. You're not restricted by locale. If you want to fly to Perth for a spot, you can.

Added WCS_Entombed Valley to the map list in the OP.
In this edition of the map, neutral supply depots have been added to the ramp outside each spawn location. Spawns have also been updated so that players can no longer both spawn on the top or bottom side of the map. Furthermore, players will never spawn in a location which forces them to take their 3rd base towards their opponent.

Pretty sure unless its cross only you always have 1 player taking a base towards the opponent. Even cross is slightly towards the opponent. See (capital)Yang's post for emphasis
ACL Regionals 3 - Blizzard World Championship Series Qualifiers!
The Australian Cyber League is proud to announce the details of our Starcraft 2 Regionals 3 dates. If you missed the announcement, you may be pleased to hear these events are also home to the Australian Blizzard World Series Qualifiers! If successful at one of these tournaments you will earn yourself a spot at National event held later in the year. Read below for all the details and how you can register yourself for one of these qualifiers!
Blizzard World Series Qualifiers being ran in conjunction with ACL Regionals:
The Starcraft II World Championship Series consists of tournaments held in nearly every part of the world, bringing players from all over the globe together to compete for pride, glory and prizes.
Starting with National Qualifiers, players will battle it out for a chance to prove they have what it takes to be the best in the country, and qualify for the Oceanic Finals in their part of the world. Then, the winners of the Oceanic Finals will earn a place to fight in the Starcraft World Championship Series, where they’ll compete for not only prizes, but the title of World Champion.
The Australian Cyber League have been named the Primary Partner of the Australian stage of the Blizzard World Championship Series and as such our Regionals events and ACL Melbourne will be qualifiers for the Nationals event to be held later in the year.
ACL Season Structure:
For those new or unfamiliar to the Australian Cyber League, there are 3 components to our competitions and season, each awarding points for your performance in these events.
- ACL Regionals: As announced, an open invite to compete for season points in each city.
- Online Events: An open invite for all to compete online against players in Australia & NZ.
- National Events: 4 of these in 2012. The next to be shortly announced as ACL Melbourne. These have the biggest attendance & biggest prizes.
How the circuit will work in brief:
You will earn points for every placing you receive within the top 32 at each event you compete in during 2012. Each component of the competition has a varying weighting of points distribution.
The National events for Starcraft 2 are Invite Only for the Pro Bracket. Invitations will be sent out based on your season points and only the top 16 ranked players in Australia by season points will be invited to the most advantageous spot for the Tournament. All other competitors at National events must fight their way through the Open Bracket.
Everyone in most capital cities will have 2 chances to accrue season points before the first national event. 1 x Liver Qualifier (ACL Regionals event) and 1 x Online Round before each National event.
Pox also finished third in his group... (comparitively equal to Edge/Ninja/Yoon), right?
Or are you basing this off points/map scores in groups too... I don't recall if Pox had the worst record of the third place finishers.
Im basing it off the ACL ranking system which put the others higher than Pox which means that Pox must have dropped more/won less maps than the others. If i remember correctly he was literally 1 map away from a WCS seed

Yeah - afaik, Pox was on 2-3 where as Ninja, EdgE and Yoon were on 3-2 for groups (and tgun made it out of his group). there was a situation where Yoon and Tgun had already claimed spots, but Ninja was 2-2 with deth to play and EdgE was 2-2 with riiChard to play. if they both lost (or just one of them), there was going to be a tie breaker between: Pox, Pezza, (riiChard if he won) and Ninja/EdgE maybe another I can't quite remember >.>
Also what exactly happens on the Friday? I want to fly up and support BiGbiRd but can't miss out on school....
From what I understand, Friday and Saturday are the Australian WCS days, and Sunday is the Oceania WCS day. It's essentially two tournaments being played back to back over a weekend.

Bracing for a billion games of SC2 to be played that weekend :O
To answer the flood of questions that have appeared on this page...
Q: Who qualified from the ACL Melbourne National event? A: tgun, Ninja, EdgE, YoonYJ. This information can be found in the OP.
Q: Where is the event being held? A: We're a few days away from revealing everything, including venue, commentators, brackets, and all that fun stuff. As you can imagine, ACL Melbourne was a priority.
Q: Is it being held in an internet cafe? A: NO. The event will be held in a standalone "hall" with seating for 330 spectators (this info is also in the OP).
Q: What's happening on Friday? A: Friday and Saturday are WCS Australia. Sunday is WCS Oceania.
I kept reading that as "Special Guest- 4 (International!) Commentators", and it was annoying me that it said 'guest' and not 'guests' But I guess it's "4 Special Guest (International!) Commentators", which is acceptable

Haha I just read that HD suffers from arachnophobia. If he comes to Australia he is gonna hear ALL about the bird eating tarantula that is native to the north east coast.

I'm tired. I think I may go to bed. Now to get out of these work clothes and into something more comfortable.
CatsPajamas!!!!! I won the internet... Do I collect my prize at the door? Because I'm flying over for all three days, so I can collect whenever you're ready.

CAPITALISE YOU SAY?
I CAN DO THAT QUITE WELL MY FRIEND!
I'd love to go to WCS, however I'd be travelling from QLD alone (and don't really know anyone). If anyone has suggestions for accommodation in the area (with reasonable rates), I'd love to hear! Are hostels/backpackers worth looking at or a really bad idea?

I'll more than likely will be flying from GC Airport, we can co-ordinate flights and try to match it up. I'd assume Chadmann will be flying up as well from the same place. SundeR might be as well, heck even Targa.
Are hostels/backpackers worth looking at or a really bad idea?
Never stayed in backpackers in Sydney, but I did in Melbourne a few years ago, pregnant and with a small child, and it was fine. I'm sure there are both dodgy ones and decent ones around.
I'm looking at booking a hotel with 4 Single Beds close to the Venue with reasonable rates and should have one locked in shortly.
I'm flying in from Adelaide on the Friday morning and leaving the Sunday night.
So if anyone is looking for accom. for a reasonable price on the Friday or Saturday night or both, hit me up on here.
First come, first served. (South Australians get preference because I said so)
Add me on Skype - CeeSerpent or Facebook which is at facebook.com/c.evans04 (I think, FB is blocked at work so I cant check that).
Let me know if there is a place where every1 is looking to stay!! I am keen to buy-in or watever the go is! I have about 3 friends prolly looking to come as well.
