its probably one of those things where its the simplest solution but you just dont think of it. ie skype volume/windows volume mixer etc...
It was actually a case of "the stream is already live and games are underway, I don't have time to troubleshoot it right now." :P
I'm pretty sure it's this, copy/pasting a similar issue from one of the other ACL staff:

Essentially it seems that Skype decided to nominate my Plasma TV as it's output source, rather than my headset. It's weird, it's never done this before, but it makes perfect sense. I bet if I turned the volume up on the TV, I'd be able to hear Maynarde. Shouldn't be a problem tonight - I just don't have much time to test things out between getting home from work and firing up the stream.
