At the moment you might be able to run an Australian team tournament online, but asking entire teams to fly to Brisbane for $1000 prizepool is asking a bit much. It depends on how big you want to make the teams and how many teams you expect to turn up.
I'd love to do a teams tournament online but to fly to Brisbane for a tournament seems a bit to much. Also when you say teams do you mean 2's, 3's or 4's?

There are probably 3-4 competitive teams if teams like nGen and aLt just send out their Australian lineup. On top of that I am sure there are a few filler teams without as much recognition, but for $1000 getting a team of at least 4 people to Brissie is not going to happen because even 1st place would not pay for travel expenses.

Well for an offline team event where first to 4 wins means victory you only need teams of 4 if you want to save money. One of the main reasons they have 8 players there other than having more sniping options is that online people are likely to noshow but this would not be a problem offline. Minimum team size could be 4 if necessary.
As for the prize, as long as it's fairly distributed so that players who invest in the flights could make a profit if they place it would be fine. Or you could dedicate some of the prizepool towards subsidising the travel expenses for inter-state players.
Another option could be regional events supported by other netcafes (or the same LAN cafe chain in various states) where the local teams play off for the final offline event. If the local LANs could help with travel expenses instead of a regular prize that could increase your chances of having an offline final.
Otherwise I guess an option is running it online to gague how much interest there is (both from teams/players and spectators) so you have something to approach a larger sponsor with.
