The Legend of Zelda

The Legend of Zelda Thread
"$#@% Skyrim, Skyward Sword for GOTY!"

Click the image to open in full size.

The latest installment, Skyward Sword is set to be released in Australia on the 24th of November. Around the world, review sites are handing out generous 10/10s, as well as cries of "best Wii/Zelda game ever". Will it live up to the hype and excellence set by it's predecessors?

Please remember to use spoiler tags when discussing Skyward Sword. Yes, I know the game has leaked, but I'm sure some people are waiting for official release

+ [Skyward Sword Reviews] +

Official Nintendo Magazine: 98% - It's not something we say lightly, but the Zelda series really has never been this good.
Edge: 10/10 - How apt that this ultimate tale of hero-making should see Nintendo's hardware become the console it was always meant to be.
GamesRadar: 9/10 - A perfectly balanced mix of innovation and classic Zelda gameplay, Skyward Sword truly lives up to the Zelda legacy of excellence and offers the most variety of any Zelda game to date. Its swordplay and puzzles are some of the best in the series, and seeing Link and Zelda's first story chronologically is a treat for longtime fans.
The Guardian: 5/5 - Revolutionary on at least two counts, with the best motion controls ever seen in a video game and an inspired reinvention and improvement of the Zelda formula.
Wired: 10/10 - Exceptional visual design and music, reinvented Zelda gameplay, tons of content that doesn't get repetitive.
IGN: 10/10 - This is the Wii game we've been waiting for. Through all of the mini-games and odd sports collections, many wondered if and when Nintendo would ever find a way to deliver a deeper experience that still fulfilled on Wii's limitless potential. Skyward Sword makes good on that promise.
Metro: 10/10 - Revolutionary on at least two counts, with the best motion controls ever seen in a video game and an inspired reinvention and improvement of the Zelda formula.
Nintendo World Report: 10/10 - If you bought a Wii, you owe it to yourself to get this game right away. After all, isn't one-to-one swordplay what made us all excited about the Wii in the first place?
Joystiq: 4.5/5 - Somewhere within Skyward Sword slumbers the best Zelda game of all time. It is choked by a dozen hours of needless cruft; but it's there, a masterpiece entombed by a misguided ambition to be the lengthiest game in the franchise's history. It's still an incredible game, but it could have been the greatest game ever made, and the moments that keep it from doing so are absolutely going to break your heart.
Game Informer: 10/10 - hat fact alone makes Skyward Sword a title that every gamer should experience.
GamePro: 4/5 - A good, well-designed adventure that does much to redeem five years of motion controlled shovelware. When I look back on it, I think I'll mainly remember the combat -- not something I've ever said about a Zelda title
GiantBomb: 4/5 - For mostly better and only a little bit worse, Skyward Sword is the best Zelda game in years, and makes a strong case for motion controls when done right.
GamesTM: 9/10 - After twenty-five years and sixteen games, Nintendo celebrates Link's birthday with a breathtaking voyage through Hyrule with The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword. It's the Zelda the Wii was made for.
1UP: B+ - I believe this to be one of the more admirable chapters of the series, even if at times it feels the developers were unsure of which sacred cows to keep and which to sacrifice.

This thread serves as a tribute to one of the greatest gaming franchises ever. All discussion on anything Zelda related (favorite game/characters, hopes for future releases, I guess you can talk about the TV show if you REALLY want to) belongs here. Have fun posting!

Probably my favorite videogame franchise. I picked A Link to the Past in the poll, but I could never truly have a single favorite.

For me,
ALTTP = MM > LA > OOT = WW > TP = OoX

Personally, I find that OoT has aged rather badly, whereas A Link to the Past is still as beautiful as ever (it also pretty much defined the standard "Zelda formula" to be used in most following games). Majora's Mask is so dark, wacky and different that I can't help but love it. Just my opinion though, I'm sure lots of people disagree!

I still haven't played the NES games. I'm so ashamed of myself

I think it was the story + the whole three day thing giving it a real sense of urgency that does it for me. Only thing against MM was that it was so short t.t

I'm going to have to wait a week or so after release for payday to get SS. I can't wait. It sounds like the game I imagined when Wii was first unveiled. Only five or so years late!

Why do all the good things happen when I'm away on field work? I miss out on stalking Pig/tgun at the Arena LAN, and I miss out on Skyward Sword release day!

In other news has anyone else preordered the collector's edition? I can't wait to get my golden wiimote.

I feel your pain.

I was too lazy to put in a preorder. I better be able to get a copy >.<

I've been clinging to my SS pre-order for like a year now. Was so crushed when it was delayed. But so happy that it's coming in 1 week.

P.S. My faves are A Link to the Past and Twilight Princess. OoT was brilliant in it's time, but about 5 years ago, TP really brought my childhood back.

P.P.S. Minish Cap and Four Swords aren't on the list - both great games.

I knew I was missing some! Just classify those ones under handhelds too. Minish Cap was great, but super short.

And I agree, while OoT was perhaps more "revolutionary" and makes me feel nostalgic or whatever, I'd rather play TP over it any day of the week.

I've never played Zelda II, but from what I gather, it's generally considered the worst, right? (Apart from those CD-i games lol)

Highly recommend A Link to the Past! It's probably the biggest + most epic of them all

I'm 99 percent sure you can get it on virtual console for Wii for like 10 bucks. Though you will need a gamecube controller. Do it do it do it!

Hmm, a fully remade lttp with 3D engine could be cool, but I really don't think it needs to be ported again. It's already available on so many different consoles. Would much rather see them work on something new.

I barely tolerated Wind Waker because I found the oceanic navigation to be very, very frustrating. Like if you miss your course just slightly, it's not a simple case of just turning around. You had to do like entire laps or teleport back to a previous checkpoint just to take another stab at it and long story short: it was not a fun or interesting gameplay element. The sailing was just annoying, the treasure finding was tedious. The game was "decent" if you just wanna play 100% linear and go from start to finish, but it wasn't as enthralling as the other titles which make you want to discover secrets.

I never got around to playing Spirit Tracks 'cos I was terrified that they'd do the same thing with a train...

Spirit Tracks was actually a fun game. The dungeons and puzzles (as well as the control scheme) was refined a lot from Phantom Hourglass, and the train sections, although simple and eventually a little boring, are much more linear and less time consuming compared to the WW sailing. That said though, I loved WW. Yes the sailing got a boring, especially by the big treasure hunt near the end, but I enjoyed the game overall despite that.

Spirit tracks was a lot better than wind waker.

Also Full HD Zelda looks nuts, I think i'll actually buy a Wii U ... they do look pretty cool.

A Link to the Past is actually my favourite of all time. Cute hit it on the head, you can't go past how amazing this game STILL looks to this day. Currently playing Ocarina of Time 3D on the 3DS which is pretty cool

As far as the Wii Zeldas go I actually loved Wind Waker. I loved how they just went in the cell shading direction and managed to pull off a pretty sweet looking game. The little "tunes" when you're combo hitting a monster was awesome, as were the boss fights. I liked the sailing and never had too many problems with it, I got stuck at one point when I didn't know what to do next (I refuse to find walkthroughs for Zelda games) and EVENTUALLY figured out you needed to drop into a hurricane or something. I loved the little wand mechanic, the sounds and the facial expressions and how everything felt like a Zelda game even though it looked different. I finished it 100 percent. The final boss fight was epic as.

I played Twilight Princess once all the way through and haven't touched it again. It looked good, it felt very "Zelda" but turning into a Wolf and howling turned me off vs the wind waker. The shadow beasts were cool, got kind of tired when I had to kill a whole bunch to get out of those little red fenced areas. I like what they did with the fairy and the plot twist (Midna etc) and the end boss was pretty cool (except for the very very end, that was lame and SUPER easy) but yeah definitely didn't like the wolf thing, it sounded terrible too. I dunno, I can't really put my finger on it but I DEFINITELY preferred Wind Waker over Twilight Princess. Never really got stuck, it was pretty obvious what to do next. It's a good game, but yeah. Sorry Dox.

Needless to say I am going to buy Skyward Sword and thrash it, especially if half the reviews are true. In pretty much every Zelda, the same thing happens (Ganondorf is coming oh noes) but you have your "tool" which is generally what the game is named after (Wind Waker, Ocarina, etc). If the "tool" is fun to use and I love using it I think I enjoy the whole game more. ALL the items should to be cool (and different) and fun to use by the looks of things, and I love a good boss fight with fun mechanics. No doubt there'll be something I need to throw bombs at until it's stunned and I can smack it a few times with my sword (lol).

Sorry for the rant, really hope Skyward Sword is amazing. Long live Zelda!

A couple of my favourites haven't been mentioned yet.. Did anyone play Link's Awakening? Probably my favourite 2D Zelda game (besides the almighty A Link to the Past of course). There was also the Oracle of Seasons/Ages games on GBC which were great fun too.

I think the Wind Waker is the only LoZ game I never actually completed.. Just seemed to tedious as mentioned earlier. I enjoyed it as all the normal LoZ elements were there, just the extra elements of the game kind of ruined it. Still worth while to play if you love all the others of course.

I think my order of love for these games would follow something like OoT > MM > aLttP > TP > LA > OoS/A > MC > Rest

Link's Awakening had a very melancholic feel to it. Perhaps the saddest Zelda game?

Oracle of Seasons and Ages were boss. I remember in primary school, me and my friend had one each, then when we beat them, you could swap to unlock the "final boss" (Hint: it was Ganon)

A Link to the Past makes me tear up when I hear the opening music, I have no idea why. I don't think I have replayed a game as much as I did that one. Ocarina of time was good, I don't recall enjoying any of the other games though. HEY LISTEN HEY HEY HEY.

Skyward sword looks decent though, I shall have to make some time for it (didn't even know about it before QQ).

Some wicked ass boss nerds managed to get Skyward Sword running via a PC Emulator and it LOOKS GODDAMN STUNNING.

Niiice, although it won't look so crisp on Wii being SD and all. The art style is still sick though

It's like the cellshading style of Wind Waker meeting the more adult style of Twilight Princess. Good mix

I one hundred percent agree. MM has the best story out of any of them imo

Majora's Mask > Ocarina of Time
Definitely not stupid. Still, I have too much trouble deciding between these two games. They both meant different things to me, OoT being the first time I experienced Zelda in 3d, MM being possibly the most unique game in the whole series.

Finally some intelligent people (all of you, just quoted the last person for convenience),

Every time I became involved in discussions about Zelda with my group of friends ranging from school all the way into university, I would immediately get shut down by OoT fanatics who thought that it was the pinnacle of Zelda and wouldn't listen to any reasonable arguments on why the other games were just as (or better than) it.

Eventually they wore me down until I just stopped arguing for Majora's Mask and gave up lol.

Just out of curiosity, what's your reasoning behind more fun? They played pretty much identically :P

Longer game, although MM had a ton of side quests (Time Journal system, collect masks etc) It was just more fulfilling to complete OoT than it was for MM.

Its hard to explain but I enjoyed the story line of OoT, got into it more and enjoyed playing the game all together than MM.

OoT just had more fun moments.

Shooting the arrow into the Sun for Fire Arrows (So proud of myself for figuring that out)
The infamous Water Temple
Triforce Tennis boss fight.
Trying to bomb the rolling Goron so he would talk to me.
Jabu Jabu's Belly, carrying that dumb bitch around.
Annoyingly slow King shuffle

I can count so many things I remember that were fun about that game, where as MM its just the Journal and transforming into things.

I just liked MM because of the story. I'm all about depth and immersion when it comes to playing video games and OoT just didn't draw me in like MM did. ah the good old days.

Just ended up putting in a preorder for Skyward Sword. 120 bucks for game + soundtrack + remote with motion plus integrated + free delivery is a pretty solid deal for me. Now I just can't afford to eat for a week or so t.t

you've got a good hour of even-worse-than-normal pre-story to go through... seriously the whole buff guy trying to get with zelda when zelda clearly wants your dick not his got old after like 1 minute T-T.

Fwiw i'm about to enter the 5th temple atm, enjoying it a fair bit so far, it seems pretty long as well, like most other zelda games 5 temples in seems a lot shorter than how longs it's taken me to get 5 temples deep in this one.

also goes without saying, any story spoilers or whatever please spoiler tag it so as to not ruin the game for everyone else. cheers.

Well, that was a solid way to kill the day. Think I'm just starting the third dungeon now. Game is pretty damn fun.

Zelda always manages to remind me how retarded I am. Spent like half an hour on the most simple puzzle (if you could even call it that) ever t.t

I seriously thought during that pre-story thing i was gonna get laid like 5 times by zelda.

But i'm pretty far into the story now
+ Show +
Just beat sandship
and i have to say
+ Show +
This zelda is absolutely amazing, the whole time shifting idea is superb and effects are absolutely amazing for what the wii is limited to do.

Sooo finally finished it today, ~35 hours playtime (spent a lot of time ******* around in skyloft doing misc side-quests etc.)

+ Show +

Last temple (the one where you re-arranged the room layout) was probably the funnest, most original, most frustrating and most satisfying to complete temples of any Zelda i've ever played. The end-boss fight (both the girahim and demise fight) were fun, charging down the huge spiral grassland place (forgot its name) taking out like 100's of monsters was pretty cool too.

Overall I think it was pretty awesome, for me the most enjoyable zelda since OoT and MM.

Few downfalls:
  • The harp in general, everything to do with it, especially the ******* lumpy pumpkin bit, was ******* gay.
  • The fuckin collect 15 light bulbs quests... when i found out there was a fourth one I was pretty pissed off... Thank god I only ever failed one once and it was fairly early on... I've heard horror stories about people getting hit right as they're about to return all 15... lol.
  • Most of all, swimming underwater in 3d is generally pretty ******* anoying to control in games... With the wii-mote it made it ten times worse, and that quest when the grass-land floods and you have to collect the musical notes underwater made me want to break the new wiimote i spent $40 on just to play this fuckin game.

But apart from that, I loved pretty much the whole game. It was also pretty funny the direction they decided to go in with Groose, i thought for sure they made you hate him so he'd become a bad guy, but by the end, in my head, Groose was the fuckin MAN.

Now someone else finish the game so i can hear their opinions :P.

Ok read them now

Last temple was so good, very very well designed and amazing. ******* nostalgia when the place went down, and getting the triforce was soooo satisfying (considering you dont get it in many other zeldas.
The harp i didn't like, id rather play songs whenever i wanted, like the ocarina.
Some things when they tie together like impa being grannie and zelda locked away in the room behind it (at first i was like WTF is that... then later im like OOOOOOHHH ******* TIME TRAVEL)

But i guess these are the limitations of the wii. Can't wait for 3ds and Wii U Zeldas!

Didn't read your spoiler yet (lol), I'm only just up to the ocean/desert after the second trial. It's taken faaaaar longer than it usually does (which is good). Can you give me a rough percentage of how far I am through main storyline?

edit: Didn't realize I was in the fifth dungeon til I got the item and dungeon map lol

Just beat this bad boy last night

I loved the puzzles this time around. Didn't have to light a single torch on fire! I think my favorite ones involved the timeshift orbs, they were clever (the desert changing into an ocean as you moved about it was awesome). Also, the last temple definitely was cool. Had a very old school zelda feel to it.

The story/atmosphere of the game was very nice too. I think the art style worked very well, especially considering the Wii's limitations.

I also thought for sure either Groose or the old lady in the Sealed Temple would turn out to be evil (blew my mind when I found she was Impa lol). Groose has the exact same physical characteristics as Gannondorf and the Gerudo, can't just be a coincidence surely? Hmmm.

Motion control was fine. It was pretty much how I imagined Wii games would be played when it was first announced.

All in all, a very solid addition to the franchise, definitely as good, if not better, than any of the console games over the last ten years.

Ah so many thoughts, I think I might have to write a blog or something lol

Just finished this game, the ending was very cool. Did a good job of putting the series mythology into perspective.

Time for hero mode now

I have recently been getting my Zelda fix through watching speed runners on Twitch.

WW: http://www.twitch.tv/cosmowright
MM: http://www.twitch.tv/goronguy

They are both amazingly skilled at their respective games and interact with chat

Zelda, my first gaming love (the game not the girl... well maybe both).

My favorite would actually have to be MM, while OoT was great, it felt linear, MM did not; the whole time travel mechanic was amazing and I have yet to see a game pull time travel off nearly as well (maybe chrono trigger... maybe).

WW and OoT come equal second, love them to bits.

I overheard Cosmo was making a 2 part "how to" for OoT speed run I think the first part might be out not sure but there is their primary speed running website http://speedrunslive.com/ which might have some info for you.

I haven't played Skyward Sword yet. I do want to play it, because it's ******* Zelda. But then I remember I would have to use the Wiiremote for it.

OoT was my favourite. Mostly because my brother and I would keep bragging to each other about how far we had gotten (I was super jealous he became an adult before me). At the time, I didn't like MM because I always kept forgetting what I had to do and when to do it.

I saw a gameplay demo of ALTTP2, and to me it's seeming like it's going to be the like Master Quest. Same storyline as the original, just with new dungeons. Also, adding in Paper Mario gameplay.

And this dude reviews the Zelda series as a whole in an awesome way, and how Nintendo should make future titles.

The whole speedrunning in OoT is basically based around 2 tricks

1. The infinite sword, which basically makes your sword attack anything it touches, all the time. The way you do it is, find a sign/enemy crouch (if enemy hold z to target) and attack it, about half way through your animation you hit A so it cancels the attack animation but the dialogue for the sign or information from nami comes up, after you've past through the dialogue your sword is out forever and will have a unique glow and cut anything it touches (this is mainly used for bosses/mini bosses).

2. Bombchu/bomb hoverslide/flip, to do this you activate infinite sword glitch, go to an edge where link can backflip off and aim at a wall and put down a bomb, just before it explode you roll into it and and backflip back, it will make you land in the air and can be used to get hover boots/shadow temple early and a bunch of other stuff, to do it with bombchu's pull out backflip first with it pulled out, let the Arrow/Seed fly, then pull out a bombchu and make Link raise his shield. To hover slide, put down the bomb crouch with your shield and roll just as it explodes and pull out your shield when rolling to slide across the map.

these are the 2 main and most important to master tricks as they save hours in the game, the other glitches are straight forward and can be learned from watching cosmo, just watch him do a run and follow his route, he obviously doesn't show most of the tricks but i gave the two hardest to do by eye to you. The rest you can copy and are straight forward.

After thinking for the last hour or so...

At the moment: LttP > SS = MM > WW > LA > OoT = Oracles > TP > MC > ST > PH

Disagreements, gentlemen?
