I think there are about 650ish at the moment. Honestly, the games stick to a pretty rigid formula, but generally get better with each installment (excludin R/S for me, those ones were boring).
The competitive scene is entirely community ran. This is a good thing. Pokemon are classified into different tiers, so it keeps things pretty balanced. I don't play competitively, but it's actually very in depth, far more than most people would think before looking into it.

I was a competitive player in 4th gen, it's actually really hard, the top players are really strong, perhaps the greatest part was Oceania always would win the "nation wars", I unfortunately didn't make the team the year I tried out. But it was great seeing the Aussies and Kiwis dominate.
I personally haven't played Black and White and still haven't finished heart gold. Perhaps I might get the new game for my brother when it comes out and borrow it now and then.
