The Gamespot community players are handpicked, and applications above a certain league threshold will be disregarded. It's supposed to be an amateur event for the gamespot guys, not a back door for the SC2SEA Grandmasters who weren't invited.
(This is why I haven't been advertising the registration page)

I've added 16 interviews to the OP. Feel free to check 'em out. Here's a sample.
Lucas “Techtron” Tan is a 17 year old Zerg player from Melbourne, and although being relatively new to the scene, he’s boasted some very impressive results. Like many of his fellow Zergs, he enjoys the element of control inherent to the ZvT matchup, where the slightest mechanical slip or wrong decision can significantly impact either player.
Having attended numerous Melbourne events, Lucas is always striving to defeat his friendly rival deth, as the two of them regularly face eachother in the final rounds of every local tournament – including the recent Australian Cyber League Melbourne Regionals where both of them were awarded invitations to participate in the Blizzard World Championship Series for Australia!
With Heart of the Swarm on the horizon, Team Eve’s Techtron is really looking forward to the Custom Game UI enhancements. After seeing how successful the original “Defense of the Ancients (DOTA)” map was in WarCraft 3, he’d love to see another genre-defining map emerge in StarCraft 2.
All the bios say they look forward to facing their rival deth but he isn't even invited?!
I asked them who their biggest rival was, they said deth. It wasn't exclusively within the context of this single event, just a general statement. To be clear, the players weren't informed who else was invited until this thread was posted. No-one knew if their rivals were being invited or not.
There are still a few spots left in the Gamespot/Amateur tournament, so you guys might be able to squeeze in if you're quick. Obviously they'll only be selecting people ranging from like Bronze to Platinum, so please don't try signing up if you're a high tier player. I'll be reviewing all of the participants tomorrow! Please don't even try smurfing, you'll be doing a lot of damage to yourself and the event.
The 16 participants in tonights Amateur tournament have been contacted via the e-mail addresses they provided. All of the details can be found in my e-mail. Thanks to everyone who applied, and apologies to those who didn't make the cut. I ended up capping it at Bronze through to Platinum because seriously, there are people from the Gamespot community competing who have never played a ladder game and are only half way through the campaign. I was really disappointed to see nearly a dozen high-ranked Masters/GM players registering from SC2SEA trying to snipe them. :P
We'll be kicking off in just over 5 hours with Maynarde & myself on the broadcast. Brackets and stream link will be provided at 6:45PM.
The Amateur Bracket has been published! The broadcast will be live in 25 minutes. Best of luck to all participants! Top 4 will advance to the finals on Sunday and score themselves (at least!) $100 each.
If you have a tourny like this again a suggestion for next time?
IMO not much uncertainty is created by a 'pro-am', we all know the amateurs don't have a chance in hell of competing against the pro's, so little excitement is created through having them play against the top guys. The community building amounts to someone getting stomped by a pro and that's that.
In the future I'd love it if a pro was paired with an amateur player. Then each play through their own brackets and the highest combined placing takes it out. This creates a situation where everyone is cheering for different amateurs and hell, if a pro is smart they might also take the time before the tourney to try and help coach up their partner a bit in their own time.
IMO a bit more fun than seeing a heap of guys slaughtered, and a lot more friendly / community building atmosphere from it.
