Excellent point raised by minimat.
Is there a way for us to select the banner like we do with the colours for a certain period?
That way we can trial it over an extended period and decide which is best!! Some people will be disappointed after this is over though. :P
But sticking to 1 (or 3 for Insom's because it's thematically the same) is important for uniformity (the banner is like an identity).

All three designs are really nice.

For me the decision was simple though, design 2 by paperclip. It's simple, clean and keeps a lot of this community sites images which gave it its identity (specifically the SEA-horse and cartoon style images).
