I think experience is the biggest factor, which unfortunately I only have a little more of than you perhaps, but I'll weigh in with some general rules of thumb.
- Try to have more vikings than your opponent always (even early - that means more vision!). Also, try sniping his vikings wherever possible early in the game, which obviously will mean he has less later.
- When you finish 3/3 vehicle upgrades, go straight to ship upgrades on your otherwise idle armories
- Sky terran might be the natural transition, but if you want to win the position battle before it gets to that point, try getting a few ghosts out and using nukes. Nukes are a great way to manipulate enemy tank lines
- Mix in a raven or 2 for PDDs in a viking vs viking battle. It can give you the edge even with a numbers disadvantage
Nuking is much harder to do, but super fun. It might not be the best choice for you improvement-wise, but I think mech vs mech is rare enough to not happen every matchup.

generally when the game stabilizes some what and you are on 4-5 bases of gas you through down 5 starports 3 reactor 2 tech lab you only need a few BC 3-5ish rest ravens and lots of vikings if you are meching you are going to have double armoury they should always be upgrading mech upgrades first then Air upgrades even if you are not going sky terran for another 4 mins or what ever. I dont vs mech much (and if i do lose to it before sky terran because i cant beat mech) nor do i mech so i very rarely come across this situation, so my advice maybe a little out dated or wrong.
- 4-5 Base gas
- 5 Starport Trans
- Upgrades
i know i expanded late/ or not enoguh because i was still scared of his mobile drop army then nek minut i just got rolled by poor movement and BC's ._. any critism is welcome. i know sometimes my stuff is idle but hey i was a former zerg and you make stuff a lot at once not bit by bit.. still getting used to the terran concept =P
