This weeks BSG had a reduced field, with 18 players competing to test their skills in the most prominent weekly BSG tournament in the SEA region. This week there were a number of bronze and silvers competing, with only two gold players. Therefore this week we saw a few more bronzes and silvers go deeper in the tournament than they might usually.
First a quick interview with the winner:
Vol: Congratulations on winning this weeks BSG! Firstly, would you like to tell the community a little about your history with gaming and starcraft?
Kyoshi: Well I picked up SC2 about a year ago. Played for fun with a few rl friends for a few months. I was in Bronze for what seemed forever. After getting out of Bronze it was only a matter of time til I got into Gold. I played and still do play most of my games on NA for the competition and fast queues and the same happened over there.
I was Platinum on NA for a few weeks after a new season, I then quit for a few months. I've been back about a month and a half, in that time I've now in solid gold on both NA and SEA. Playing a little bit more every day I'm starting to get the hang of the game once again.
Other than starcraft, I played Age Of Empires ofcourse and Warcraft 3 as well as a bit of Dota/LoL etc. I've mainly been a World of Warcraft player playing at high 2200+ ratings for a while. Recently quit this year dedicating most of my time to SC2.
Vol: What do you believe are your biggest strengths and weaknesses in sc2?
Kyoshi: Biggest strengths would be my ability to improve my micro the more I play. My DT play is pretty deadly might I add. Early harass at low levels I find to be easier each and every time aswell.
Weaknesses are a long list. To Short List it, my bad temper, my PvT, my macro, my transitions, my timing, my probe production(which I've gotten better at).
ASIDE: After the third game of the finals, which our champion lost (the only game he lost in the tournament), the following occurred in the BSG chat channel:
This comment came after our hero had one based to victory the preceding two games. Also – little known rule for those entering the next round of BSG tournaments.
Vol: What race do you believe is the most powerful at your level?
Kyoshi: Terran for sure. The skill cap being played at Bronze/Silver/Gold and Even Platinum allows Terrans to do anything they want from Mass Marines to MMBall and at the higher levels (gold/plat), ghosts come into it and give you a lot of trouble late game. Nothing is really OP at this level however.
Vol: What is your favourite Protoss unit and why?
Kyoshi: Dark Templar. I know how many people despise it. I know how many people suck at using it (even at high levels). I also know that my friend who I played in the semi's freaking hates them. =D
It isn't BM when you are Terran. I know I say the same thing when there are Colossi and DTs on the same screen wrecking my base
Vol: Anythign else you would like to add?
Kyoshi: Just like to thank everyone that helped run it. Especially z33k, Suipr and TheGrayZerg. The Pro's started somewhere and this gives everyone stepping stones. I encourage everyone to try the BSG Sea Tourny out and other tournies on SEA.
Kyoshi's style
During the tournament (in which he went 9-1), Kyoshi displayed many builds that allowed him to not be as predictable as most BSG players. Favouring many 3gate robo builds, Kyoshi always seemed to be setting himself up to be aggressive, with many little prods and pokes to keep his opponents off guard. Favouring sentrys and robo units (there were no stargate units or high templars built in his tournament), his vision of his opponents base and map control was spectacular. Add to that solid macro and good expansion timing, and Kyoshi could go far in the future. Being 15, his best sc2 years are in front of him.
Some of my favourite moments from his tournament:-
I don't usually use Pheonixes in PvP...
Overall rating: Macro: 7/10. Bit to work on here, but overall much better than many of his opponents. The builds would be tighter if Kyoshi didn't have so many, but at the end of the day his macro for the sheer number of builds used was solid.
Micro: 8/10. Easily Kyoshi's best attribute – he engages well with his army and always seems to trade armies advantageously.
Best Attribute: Forcefield micro. Even when Kyoshi engaged in a tough spot, he got to pull back with clutch forcefields that saved his army. I think it would be scary to see what this guy could do with high templar's storm.
Potential weakness: Over-reliance on robo units. After watching these replays I would feel pretty comfortable blind countering the robo in every game with either vikings or corruptors. While this may not be a problem on the ladder, it could be a weakness if it continues unchecked.
Either way, another great BSG over, and I know I am glad the BSG has returned and who'd have thought a Protoss v Protoss final?
About 25 mins last night to do the interview and get the replays, about 1 hour today to watch the replays and figure what I wanted to write about kyoshi, and the about 35 mins doing the bbcode formatting (havent done any before). If I had my time again i wouldnt use spoilers for the pictures, it splits up the blocks of text nicely. Any tips?
So far they run every Saturday (night for me I'm in Perth) and the restrictions are you have to be either in Bronze/Silver/Gold and it's played on SEA.
And this is where you'll find the info and sign up information for this Saturday's coming one.

Thanks for the good well run tournament, casting and work put into it. Thanks for the nice comments and hilarious screenshots to go with the subtitles as well. I got a good laugh out of all of it.
