From the lonely bronze player to the highest of GM's every Starcraft 2 player wants to improve. The beauty of Starcraft is you can never win Starcraft (unless your Flash), and it is because of this reason that anyone who plays this game regularly wants to improve and become better. And with this in mind I'll tell you how i went from rank 48 bronze to high diamond facing masters/GM's in around 5 months, with one simple word Motivation.

I think anyone who's ever been to a Starcraft forum has seen a thread asking how do i get out of X League as X race, And every time it will be the same things Mechanics, Spend your larvae, don't get supply blocked, switch to this race and A-move. And all those idea's are right you need good mechanics etc to get better but all that is worthless without motivation. If you don't have the motivation to improve than all that knowledge of what to do is worthless. Take a look at all of the top players in the world currently, they all enjoying playing this game. Yeah maybe after a losing streak every player might swear to never play again but eventually you'll come crawling back. So with all this in mind ill explain how I used this practically.

Like a lot of people I bought Starcraft 2 day one with very little RTS experience (AOE 2 taught me to read I played it so much) and like a lot of other people with no multiplayer experience I got placed in the bronze league Q_Q. And i stayed their until March this year when on a whim I decided to re-install Starcraft 2 and give it another go but for some reason it stuck this time. From then I began to uncover the huge community around the game and the whole competitive scene. And basically my obsession snowballed from there. Now I play a ridiculous amount every day (while still doing homework/assignments) because I have motivation to become the youngest Aussie to go pro. I'M not saying that you need to have an insane amount of motivation to improve but if you want to improve fast than having the drive to want to get to whatever in-game goal you set is extremely important.

Re: Motivation

I got to GM also in around 5-6 months, 2-3 which were inactive (after switching from Zerg to Terran). The motivation I used was to listen to 'When I Am Grandmaster' by Temp0 haha. As a noob, I would see these guys being diamond+ and being so good and i wanted to get there, to have my name on the list of 200. It was a goal that I wanted to fulfil, and I did it.

The biggest thing I think though, not only motivation but enjoying the game. I still enjoy the game to this day, and that's the main thing. Your goals will seem so much easier when you enjoy the grind to get there, and then when you reach it it'll be all the more satisfying.

GL turning pro ^^

Re: Motivation

Ah dude! Great post man. It's such a good feeling to be privy to a community who is just as passionate as you are. All I can say is keep going to those LANs in Brisbane. Because it's smaller than the other regions, it's the perfect training ground to shake off the nerves of playing in front of other people, especially with the older guys! You've probably felt it already, but every time you leave an offline tournament, no matter your result, there's a huge feeling of inspiration and as you said, motivation, that follows you.

Keep plugging away at it, everyone who is serious here is chasing their dream and you only have one shot at life, so go for it!

100%. No matter your skill level. Happened at my first LAN when I was silver, and has happened at every LAN since.

Eros, your post speaks to me a lot, when I find the motivation I cannot be stopped. Sometimes it's hard to come by, but when it hits, I will just play and play and play. And then realise I've been promoted.
