Today was a good day, I got to see Adventure Time on the big screen (Thanks Cartoon Network) My local Pizza Place finally listened to my order and delivered one of the best cheese pizza's I have had to date and I was able to locate loose cans of American Mountain Dew: Code Red for only $1.49! I also had an all emcompassing awakening of my inner Starcraft II fan and I am proud to say it is all because of SEA.
Because this is a blog it allows me to brain-dump this momentus occasion right and flesh out my story so sorry for the TLR spec essay but I am quite pumped.
This all started on the 11th of June with Dox dropping some dragon magic in the form of the freshly finshed ASUS Pro-Am announcement a weekend choc'd full of gaming, goodies and great players. After seeing the initial throwdown of top notch names and spotting WA local yang and my work hours stream saviour tgun already lined up to throw down I was mega stoked and got to making my thoughts known on the Twitterverse and in the SC2SEA chat-box. This was gun be guud.
Thanks to having to get organized for a trip to Jakarta the time between then and now flew by and before I knew it Friday was here and Dox was in full press mode making sure people were aware. Thanks to taking the time and adding anyone who appeared in the Twitter thread lurking around here any time I popped open the blue bird icon on my smartphone I was informed that this Pro-Am was shaping up to be a freaking boss-hog spectacular.
The girl that decided I was ok enough to go out with had her 23rd on the Friday night so I missed the amature matches entirley but thanks to all the cool kids in this community I was able to get game by game updates when I got a chance to look and went to sleep keen to see how the pro's were going to go on Saturday.
After dragging my ass out of bed and through the kitchen I set up base-camp in my office and was going to make the best of a particularly freezing Saturday in Perth. Once the stream cranked up I was watching NvRossi vs TtPiG as a Terran player I wanted to see the Humanoids stomp the Xeno menance but it was the Ohana round and Rossi lost too many souls to PiG's infestors mandibles and my brother in arms would fell to the losers bracket to eventually take on another horde commanded by Mf.Targa.
Dox and Maynarde who killed it all day with the stream then announced that iM.Mafia and tgun were going to face off.
I rate tgun as he provides a killer stream where he is not afraid to tell things like he see's them. He chats to his audience and brings me some understanding one of my least understood races. Not to mention a bucket load of entertainment. I had the amazing opurtunity to watch some awesome back and forth between tgun and PiG earlier in the week on SEA GM ladder where these titans faced off in a series of sweet games that left tgun worse for wear in most cases. The "frenemy" vibe was well established.
Then you got Mafia who is running high on making himself known in the Korean GM ladder. 2nd SEA'er to kick it in the big leagues with some serious skill and a pocket full of recent comp wins made me feel that my source of work-time procrastination was going to make an early exit.
But he got the parmesan out and cheesed him like a yankee with a meat product in game one and then some douchecannon knocked on my door in game two causing me to miss the whole thing I sat down to the announcement that tgun had taken game! I sipped my cola in satisfaction.
More real life got in the way after that and I hit the road for dinner with pals, chums and other dog food brands but there was some sweet cake involved.
Sunday rocked up and the real life crap was over all I had to do today was shave my face (still not done at 8:42pm) and watch Adventure Time at 1:30 down at the cinemas. I set up and cranked open SC2SEA and clicked both tgun's and Dox's Pro-Am stream. I got to see Fridge take a fall to tgun on Own3d and Chadman and Targa draw out some crazy PvZ which I think included every other unit except for the right one for the situation. Maynarde running that stream solo and still managing to turn a super drawn out game 2 into an awesome production is true testament to how much skill that baller has.
Then it was tgun vs PiG.. I was stoked to be sitting down at the right times to catch these dudes play. After seeing the ladder matches earlier in the week I was pretty sure PiG had these games in the bag. Alas! I stayed strong in my support for tgun and made it known in the stream chat. Where other people just like me were sitting around with a common interest and having fun doing it.
Sorry if my details are shakey:
Game 1 was on Entombed valley where both players had mirror openers and it turned out being tguns Ling/Roach/Ultra vs Pig's Roach/Infestor PiG did a great job of denying tgun a 3rd for the longest time and eventually over-ran tgun. I felt it when tgun sat in game and sighed as he typed out the gg... only to stop and get his drones to start taking out his own building in what I could only see as him trying to deny PiG the satisfaction.
Game 2 took us to Ohana where tgun flicked a switch and caught PiG out with a timing attack..the two armies barley got into it before the gg was laid down by PiG it was all on for Game 3.
Game 3 on Cloud Kingdom was the defining moment concerning this whole business..a 30 minute battle of the bulge with both players maxxing out and ending up with Broods.. There was plenty of trades in the middle of the map but instead of both armies duking it out for the final showdown they instead went for the throat in a massive base trade.PiG smashed tguns third and quickly engulfed his natural as tgun's mass of alien flesh hovered over PiG's crumbling 3rd..looking at the red and blue dots on the minimap it was all in PiG's favour and then he dumped 3 hatches.
At this point I was barley sitting on the chair I kept reaching for my mouse to peek around the map and see who had what but it was a stream (idiot) my missus watching with me knew that shit was getting real as I cheering for someone who couldn't hear me. I was dropping letters in the chat box that didn't spell words and as tgun dropped that last hatchery and nothing happened I thought PiG had managed to hold on long enough.. then the "little spore crawler that couldn't" gave up the ghost and the victory banner popped up for tgun.
Cups were thrown mice were flung and dogs ran for cover, I don't even know what tgun was doing.. but I was kicking all kinds of houseware ass. After what exactly had happened was established I was able to sit back and just be entertained by the amazement that was those games.
I was then reminded that it was time to go to movies and I glanced at the clock.. I started watching streams at like 9am it was basically 12:30pm by then. Time flys when your having fun. I asked that people keep the tweets coming so I could keep up with the games and people obliged!
By the time I was out of the movies I was informed that tgun wasn't able to make it past Targa and was still stoked with his efforts, then I checked the brackets on the freeway and seen he had gone through the lower to take him on again in the final!
It wasn't long after when I saw this and silently fist pumped in the car heading home.
and after all this text my point comes across, and no this isn't a really long way of saying "man tgun has a nice schlong"
Thanks to the amazing people of this community I was able to not just watch a bunch of games this weekend. It wasn't just a few pros smashing keys for ladder points or to qualify or take home some money. I got to be a part of something. I got to interact with people getting as passionate as I was about this game and It still feels amazing to know that the guy I was cheering for ended up taking the tournament and even if he didn't it probably would not have mattered.
So thank you everyone for making this community what it is:
The casters like Maynarde who will sit at home all day and eat from black dishes with silver forks and Cast for hours on end.
The Dragons, the Eddies and 90's grunge bands that make something to play in.
The players who not only play the game but share it with those of us less fortunate to do as well as they do.. Streaming for our entertainment at the loss of your bandwidth is the greatest.
and dudes and chicks for populating the chat rooms getting on twitter, facebook and that awesome little java box and making up a community. Having people to share stuff with is an amazing thing and sometimes gives back more than most realize.
End of that tournament was the first time I had legitimately cheered at a Starcraft game as though I was watching footy haha, great read.

Jesus christ that cake looks amazing. And yeah, there was really something special about this event. After reading tgun's interview and following his passion throughout the entire event, you couldn't help but share in his excitement as he took 5 minutes to walk around the house and calm his nerves after each and every game. I'm really happy with the way it all turned out. Nice blog!
