Learning from Mistakes I find is one of the is the biggest key in Starcraft 2.
Not learning to macro like a bawss
Nor learning how to micro like a bawss
Nor BMing like a bawss
Nor generally being a bawss

Hopefully there is some person out there who hasn't really learnt this lesson, and that it helps them in the future. I am by no means a good player, but am going to detail my experiences through BSGCL to give examples of how losing helps you improve, in a number of ways. I always have the mentality that if I lose, I need to come up with at least 1 thing I can improve on, what I should have done and unit composition.

I stuck by this theory, and I found it reflective in my play through this week's BSGCL against ToR.
For those who don't keep up with BSGCL, I'm representing Team FaDe A and currently have a 11-4 record after this week. In this time, I've learnt huge amounts of how I play, how to improve and what not to do in situations. Note: This is not me talking about how I did freaking well, I still need to improve and work on my gameplay.

And this is where learning from mistakes comes in.

In my first match up (games from can be found on twitch.tv.com/thensnod and twith.tv/mrtran77). I came against a ZvZ (Uglymutt, a great player in his own right). Needless to say, in almost every ZvZ I used to go the Destiny 7 RR, in which I absolutely got crushed last week by a speedling expand. If I had gone 7RR, I probably would of failed again. Instead, I also went a speedling expand and with some sweet micro and key upgrades (baneling speed) I managed to pull out the win. I used to always make the mistake of going heavy roach vs speedling (in which I would get raped, refer to memory of Round 5, Ricochet vs QEDJenkins where I get absolutely raped by going roaches and continually getting them surrounded and destroyed by speedlings). Lesson learnt, don't have the go-to mentality of roaches for ZvZ. I already learnt not to 15 hatch vs a Zerg (my friends taught me lessons on that).

ZvT is by far my favourite matchup. However due to the versatility of Terrans, they can rape you in any number of ways (hellions, banshee, unexpected tank timing push). Thankfully, due to my mistakes made in Round 2 (in which I don't scout well enough, Ricochet vs TAEskimo) in which I bust his main and get met with about 8~ hellions. Much pain ensues. This time I was able to scout hellions early with zerglings and put up appropriate defence, before macroing up and pushing for the win. I cannot stress how important scouting is, especially vs a terran (for a Z). They're so versatile they can throw any number of things at you.

ZvP is always a tough one for Zergs in my opinion. My mentality usually was macro, go heavy roach, and hope for the best. This was further proved in ladder as I absolutely crushed a Toss on 4 base heavy roach. Needless to say, I got crushed in Round 3 by xGunslingerx (who had an absolute sick deathball of like, bulk collo). However, the mistakes I made then (heavy roach, barely any corruptors) helped me in the previous two rounds. In that Round 3, I threw 3 roach balls at that deathball, and had to tap out since it was so powerful. Pure roach is and will never be the answer

In last week's BSGCL, I again had a roach crapball (go figure -.-") and threw it against a deathball, doing decent damage. However, I had already planned for the roaches failing and had banked resources for ultras. (Pro tip: Ultras, stupidly good at Toss. Crap against anything else). If I had gotten max roaches again, I think I would have lost. This week against ToRSynzita I went pure roach again, but I knew if I stalled out the game pure roach wouldn't be the answer (as it was, he went for an all-in build which I held with minimal damage). Thus the answer for mass roach is only early/mid game from my experiences learnt.

Again, I would like to emphasise that the point of this blog is not to 'praise myself,' but rather to teach others who might not know what they're looking for in their play, and also to relate my experiences in BSGCL. I really would like to tell others who have been following that if you are considering in competiting, I would recommend you do. It's seriously awesome.

Would also like to say thanks to FaDe for giving me the opportunity to participate in BSGCL, FaDe A my brothers-in arms, BSGCL admins, you guys do an awesome job and finally to our competitors (non smurfing ones), for the generally well mannered games and the great games that have been played.

P.S As for replays, they're not really needed since I think I detailed it well enough for you guys to understand ^^.

Re: BSGCL All-Kill - Learning from Mistakes

I agree with learning from mistakes-because white-ra says so! But I find that no matter how good you get, you need to play a lot of games.

This is because experience is also very important!

I used to play very little games and watching a lot of pro replays to try and improve. Yet time and again I find myself stuck in low masters. The reason was not clear to me back then but it is now.

What was stopping me was not having the experience of dealing with crisis moments / moments which require instant decisions of attacking or retreating/ moments which require finnese and insane micro to the extreme and many more.

It is simply not enough to just learn from mistakes! That is the core of learning to improve in RTS like starcraft II but it's not the only rule to follow by

I certainly don't disagree with you Lordadon. I find that playing a few ladder games, and then analysing losses thoroughly, with brief looks at wins really helps in your game sense, and allows you to spot problem areas in your game. But certainly experience helps a lot as no two games can really ever be the same.

The bsgcl has been a great initiative to make us bsg players work harder to improve. Lol I remember falling to richoet after playing one of my best p v t agasint halestrorm who I hel of an early push then pushed back ff bunker and everything to going ffe agasint you in my next match and somehow forgetting to put that seconed nexus down till far to late lol.

It's a great experience and I feel I probably get as nervous as some of those gsl pros when I have my shot at bsgcl glory.
