If you want to critisize do it constructively, like unstable and rielle/froadac(after i edited them) have done in their long posts on page 7. Insulting her is a below the belt / douche thing to do and will only get your post edited/delete or your IP address banned, and when that happens you wont be able to even view the site anymore.
GOM has already made the decision to hire her and shes not going anywhere soon. So if you wanna help the situation you should be providing proper constructive feedback which she can use, obv if you insult her she will tune everything out and not even read it.
From this point unconstructive criticisms / needless insults = site ban
I dont like her accent either, it isn't professional to me. Not hating or anything, i dont mind it now (heard it too much) but yeah, might be uncomfortable for others are first just like it was for me at first.
who cares if you think she doesn't have the right accent for it, shes going, its going to happen regardless of your negative opinions. Support her regardless because shes representing SEA, our community. Go flame on TL if you feel like it with the rest of them -_-
I have no issue with her accent, Starcraft is something I want to see big globally, different accents & culture are gonna come into play with such a widely spread event.

Agreed, sc2 fans should be embracing diversity, it shows how widely loved the game is! Instead all those TL fags just want a homogenised, americanised approach to professional starcraft.

Statements like this make me annoyed. SC2 is going to be a SPECTATOR esport. so regardless of personal feelings whether you like kelly's casting or not. The majority voice will win. IF you take the time to read that entire TL thread yes you have the few retarded 1 liners but the majority are legitimate complaints about her style which they are allowed to have. Like it or not, the majority of SC2 Players at the moment ARE from the USA (according to sc2ranks.com)
Some things she cant change like her accent (well technically she can but w/e) some things she will need to work hard on like the points brought up in that TL thread. she will have a season of code A to show us what she can do and like her or hate her. GOM is a business and they will go with the direction that makes them the most $$ if people stop watching because of it which is possible then they obviously will change their mind.

Yeh I didn't want to really say anything about her accent but it is quite a problem. She doesn't speak fluent English and sometimes it is rather hard for me to understand her. I don't normally have problems understanding foreign accents since I grew up around people with a range of different accents. Since she is now becoming a professional commentator and will be doing this (hopefully) for a living, I believe she should take steps in order to correct deficiencies in her English which would most likely make her cast far more enjoyable to listen to. I think she should have received speech therapy earlier if this was the career path she wished to take.
No matter how great her ability is to break down what is happening in a game, it is worthless if she isn't able to communicate her thoughts effectively to the listener. I believe a professional commentator has to bring something to the table that others can't and I don't believe she really does that.

I'm not quite sure exactly which part of what I said makes you annoyed. I never said they aren't allowed to complain, what I meant was simply that one of the main reasons they're complaining is because they're not getting their Western commentating. Which makes ME annoyed. I agree that the majority voice will win, it's just sad what that prospect brings.

I don't want to sound like a dick but I don't like her commentating at all. She doesn't have enough personality to be a successful commentator and hearing her commentating side by side with the likes of Destiny and his crew just makes me cringe.

Good luck anyway.
A different reason for me not liking her commentating is when she does constant whining about terran/protoss being op, once or twice is fine but every ******* time a protoss or terran is up against a zerg she has to always blabber on about imbalance, have to mute the stream when she goes on those rants, very annoying.
Other than that its ok, the accent isnt that bad, lets see how well both her and torch do in code a casting.
see me looking up at you and judging you in my picture
its because you are
That's just my opinion.
Can we get any more information about how exactly she obtained this position? Did she send in a demo of her work? Was she scouted? Did someone help her?
To be perfectly honest, I don't really enjoy Kelly's casting, but it's certainly not cuz of her accent. But since she's going anyway, I'm just gonna throw a few advices there:
- Avoid commenting on game balance and players' blunders.
- Speak slowly and clearly.
- Avoid stating the obvious, but comment on the build/intention the player is going for and how feasible it is instead.
Don't pull this Singlish bullshit here. There are plenty of Singaporeans here including myself and I'm sure all of us know this isn't the issue here, and that we can use bigger words and have a clearer diction even in our accents.
The fact is that she hasn't displayed an extensive knowledge of the game. She hasn't made herself more comprehensible. I have pride for our country and I love Singlish but this is the international scene and we have to be sure that we are understood. Singlish is colloquial, it's not something you push out when you have audiences from all over the world.
I agree with Glade, some Americans don't understand Australian accent when we talk fast cos of our slang, but once they get to know us they understand fine. They're just upset it's not an American caster.
Is this some sort of a joke?
Edit: Not a joke it seems.
Does anyone else think that GOM is being sexist here? There are plenty of good casters in SEA who speak fluent english, have much more in depth analysis and don't whine about protoss and terran being OP - and yet GOM picks Kelly...seemingly only because she is a female?
This to me just seems a bit sexist.

Please tell me how many of these other casters do you know for a FACT applied for the job? If they didn't apply, they can't be expected to get it.
Congrats Kelly. Your casting from what I've seen seems fairly good. And, for anyone who hasn't read the GOM announcement yet, she will be casting half the games alongside Artosis, and half alongside Tasteless, giving them both a bit of a break. Should be great experience if nothing else.

I know I didn't apply (selling my house, belongings and taking a lower paying job? Really?), and I assume by Unstables response he didn't either. I'd say she was the only SEA caster to apply, although there were some US ones that apparently did.

I must admit that I do have trouble understanding Kelly but that's mainly because I'm hearing impaired (hopefully a much more legitimate reason than pure unfamiliarity!), which makes unfamiliar accents a lot more difficult to determine.
I think it's great that Kelly's managed to secure such an opportunity, and I wish her the best of luck! I do feel that everyone has space for improvement, so if most of TL dislikes her current state of casting, I'm sure that with professional feedback from GOM she'll gradually improve.
guys, guys, why not wait for the casts to be out and enjoy it rather than whine about it.
different people have different preferences. obviously enough people have liked kelly enough to pick her.
my personal favourite is novawar from lifesaglitchtv, but not everyone enjoys his brand of commentating.
I should have been broader and said there must have been better applications from any corner of the world.
In particular I am rather puzzled why there is no Torch anywhere in that announcement?? If they only needed one person to rotate with each of Artosis and Tasteless, why not get Torch to do it?
Where do you think I live? In a cave of ignorance like you?
I was thinking more along the lines of rent, but I guess I'm too ignorant.Clearly you make a lot of money from your casting and have been able to afford to purchase a house, sorry I did not forsee this possibility.

That's a pretty pathetic argument to further someone's qualifications as a professional caster. I would go so far as to say it's sexist.

That's really what such silly arguments come down to isn't it, "hurr durr group X can't get laid, that is why they are hating, etc". No offense, but that attitude pretty much devalues any real debate.
GL kelly!!! i will deffinatly tune in to the code A now, most of the time i would b like meh code A but now im tuning in for sure!
and dw bout the haters they will probably end up tuning in anyway and see how good u r then eat their words
make sure ur extra biased towards glade
Firstly, it is not hard to understand what she is saying, I never have trouble understanding whatever she says.
Secondly, this being sc2sea, can't u guys just post positive stuff here? Any negativity u can voice it on tl.
Thirdly, if you don't like it, don't watch it. Anyone watches soccer will know shebby singh. He was terrible in commentary, but with a co-caster, I'm sure u can do selective hearing np.
I personally don't watch gsl code A, but this season field looks exciting, so I will watch it just for that reason. I don't give two f who is casting or who isn't. I admit tastosis was
pretty damn entertaining. But before she even casts, give her a chance.
Lastly, I'm neither a fan nor hater of her casts. I love any thestc games, and anyone who casts those are my favorites.

it's easy to say that when you LIVE in the same country where the accent is everywhere, its a perfectly valid complaint when you want to sit back and watch a cast you dont want to strain yourself to understand whats being said.

when you step into the limelight you haveto put up with both positive and negative feedback, no1 has been rude to her just stating their opinion.

You don't develop a good community by limiting viewpoints by opinion.
It depends whether you want to know peoples true opinions or want to paint a positive picture. If you want the positive feel-good picture then go with the yes-men (or yes-people if we want to be pc) every time!
You guys can hate on Kelly all you want. In the end, she had more than 5 times the audience of any other caster I've had.
Is she the best caster in SEA? I'd agree with the majority here and say no. BUT, yes, being a cute young woman caters more to the SC2 demographic (nerdy young men, many of whom can't get laid).
She has a Singlish accent. However, it's not THAT bad. As far as SInglish goes, her Singlish accent is fairly mild actually.
Basically, give her a chance, see how she does.
Good luck Kelly.

If we were only basing our choice on the casters sex, then we should all just watch redtube while code A is on

You've pretty much hit the nail on the head here. It's a smart business decision from GOM. Kelly will generate more new viewership through arguably being a 'cute young woman' than will be lost through her lack of solid casting ability. I honestly think it's very unlikely that people will not watch GSL Code A because of a bad caster, at worst they'll just watch it without sound which still counts as a view for future sponsorship deals.
What will be interesting though, is whether any of the haters on TeamLiquid start restreaming with redubbed audio. It's the only move I can see that will really hurt GOM because I can see a lot of people tuning into a restream with redubbed audio.
Also, I'm not sure which Singaporeans you're speaking to but I think her accent's quite strong. Most Singaporeans I know will actually turn their accent off when speaking to a caucasian (or non-singaporean) so I'm actually a little surprised she doesn't do this. Plus, I'm not too sure why but her voice (sans accent) drives me up the wall. And I can even put up with ziE's voice over medium periods of time (haha.. sorry ziE, you know I love you ).
Yoz, GOM have any restreams shutdown very quickly. If anyone can restream with redubbed audio for longer than 20 minutes and actually post it somewhere that will generate hits (TL etc) then I will be very surprised.

Really Benji? What about the re-streams you see on TeamLiquid which seem stable?
Although, even if it happens, generates a bunch of hits, and then GOM has to shut it down.. I think it would highlight its point sufficiently.
You know the amount of hate Kelly has gotten is quite interesting. While I've my own personal gripes with the way she conducts herself, I honestly think she could do a reasonable job as a co-caster. I'm biased though, cos as a Malaysian I have zero problem understanding her accent - from what I understand there's a lot of US/Euros who are really struggling.
Kelly had a lot of people flaming her for getting the spot casting GSL Code A. But to be honest, everyone was judging her a BIT too early. I just watched a bit of her casting then, and I have to be honest, her casting in GSL is actually pretty darn clear. But I despite this is going to change the general opinion on the TL.net forums, as they will just follow one another like a herd of sheep. Perhaps the mic quality (I assume GSL has good mics) and added pressure on kelly has caused better casting?
I think she's doing very good considering how stressed she must be. It's gonna get much much better with time, especially with Tasteless and Artosis on her side. Funny to see how hard she tries not to get too excited though
Another one: "I heard August sits next to JulyZerg in the StarTale house" but abit lame eh
I guess you haven't heard about the many guinea pig jokes and player name puns that Tastosis makes. Lame jokes are ok in casting, just don't do them too much.
Regarding kelly's casting though, she does need to get her facts clear and correct. That's the number one most important thing that every caster needs to have to receive any sense of credibility on what he/she says.

Not to be critical in this particular reply, however I am rather lost at comments such as "give her a chance". People say that as though she hasn't been casting for a long time already...

When people are saying "give her a chance", I'm quite sure they are referring to casting the GSL.
I mean, a lot of people wrote her off after a few sample VoDs that were posted on TL; but after tonight, it's clear that she's improved her casting abilities tremendously. So by "giving her a chance"; it's clear to see she's actually a great caster, is improving and will continue to do so. And most importantly following her passions in life; regardless of negative criticism based on people's assumptions.

But how or why should it be different to casting anything else? It's like someone might be an ok player in Australia (I said ok, so not moonglade), then they go to Korea and someone is saying, "give them a chance", well ok but...if they were never the best to begin with, why exactly would they suddenly get a lot better coming up against better opponents under more pressure?

I think it depends on existing bias. The people that supported her will continue to support her. The people that criticized the decision will continue to do so as well.
Personally I heard a ton of mispronunciations of unit names, several parts where I just couldn't understand what she was saying, she interrupted tasteless several times, and half the time she was asking tasteless what he thought about something or why a player is doing something.
A caster is actually supposed to contribute information, not ask the other caster questions...
But hey - that's just what I saw. Like I said, I doubt many people will change their minds.
On the other hand, I would like to say that it is a delight to hear tasteless come out with more commentary and analysis. And I wish he got his chance to get trolled by the gomtv forums
But that's a bit off topic.
Nothing personal but I think that was a bad decision on GOMTV's part. Americans and Europeans have zero problem comprehending me on Vent/Skype and it isn't hard at all as long as I took additional care for proper pronunciation.
The accent can be fixed and honestly it's rather inconsequential, but I find Kelly's professionalism and game knowledge + game sense very much lacking. I've seen Aussie commentators give negative feedback on how she didn't bother to inform him that she couldn't make it before disappearing on him, and I remember last year's Gaming Festival event where she disappeared on the first night, leaving a very exhausted Philibert and another totally fresh guy to cover for her.
If GOMTV really wanted someone from Singapore, they should've asked Philibert instead. That guy has been shoutcasting with Gamestah for years and he's one of the most professional casters I know of in Singapore.

It seems you haven't watched GSL tonight, she did freaking good. Cause even for people who are regularly watching her stream, she already made a freaking improvement. Never mind it being her first day with all the stress from relocating to a another country within a week, having to deal with the thousands of hate posts, maybe quitting her job in singapore... That's one hell of a first day, and she already proved so many people wrong! Even if you don't like her as a caster, Kelly is part of our community, the least we can do is to be behind her.

Also, 1st post for you...
Yeah. I've been a longtime lurker. :\ And hooray for Usul the Pillar from Dune. :P
Honestly I didn't have much reason to post here until the Ris Low of Starcraft fiasco is underway. I simply cannot facepalm enough. And yes, I did watch the stream but still, maybe it's just me whose standards are too high and I'm just being an anal-retentive guy who demands a lot out of things and people (including myself) but I just wasn't satisfied at all. I still think that we could've sent someone much better than Kelly.

Thanks for getting the Dune reference!
As for the rest... Well, you might facepalm too much and should go to the toilet more often. That being being said, Kelly is already getting better and striving to do even better. But it seems it's not enough for you, so please do tell us what you dislike about her casting.

Were you watching the Korean or English stream? I'll admit she did ALRIGHT but there is no way I am going to say she did well. If you think she did 'freaking good' last night then I think I'm going to become a professional shoutcaster.

Anyway, as for the rest, such as jokes/memes and stuff, as long as it's not offensive, it's fine. We spawned graken, grackets, gorillas and stuff. If people makes fun of the things she pronounce, it's funny -- laugh at it, but don't attack her with it. Even Tasteless said cweep. :>
I laugh about it a lot too, but come on guys... raging puts +10 years on your face, don't do it over StarCraft.
JacziE has it more like it is... She did better than expected but I don't think it's anywhere near the level of shoutcasting that people expect from GomTV events. If she is at this level at the end of Code A (and looking at the way she takes criticism, on forums as well as the fact she raged and blocked SEVERAL people on her MSN) makes me question whether she is going to be able to improve quickly enough.
JacziE as a caster from the Warcraft III days, I remember that you were criticised pretty harshly for your voice at first but people kinda got used to it. However, the main difference for mine is that when you were criticised you actually sat down and made an effort to resolve it, instead of just saying 'deal with it'.
An example was the 'burrow' thing we spoke about recently, where I remember you on stream acknowledging it, going through a list of attempted pronounciations, getting it right once, and never again. Except when you do this, at least we know you are aware of the criticism and made an attempt to fix it but failed. At least the community feels as though you have listened, thought it through and when you say burrow it becomes a ziEism rather than retardism.
Kelly's attitude towards critism right now seems so poor. Instead of acknowledging community concerns she does not post on the TeamLiquid forum (which may be a GomTV directive) and comes onto the SC2Sea forum to tell someone that they don't make sense (cue irony). Perhaps as a woman in the eSports scene you could mentor the girl and teach her how to conduct herself a little more professionally? It's already being questioned (and my post on TL didn't help but it was entirely honest) but will probably do a lot to affect her likeability.
People are more forgiving if they think you're listening and trying to improve. Kelly, fyi even if you are trying to improve behind the scenes, you still look like an absolute tool out here imo.

I agreed that Philibert is an excellent caster. However, just so you know, the only Starcraft2 event Philibert has ever casted(that I know) was Epic Gaming Convention 2010, whilst Kelly had so much more SC2 casting experience. That being said, Philibert would be inappropriate to be that SC2 caster that GOMTV was be looking for. Frankly, it does seem like you're posting with limited knowledge of what's going on in the Starcraft2 scene of SEA
As for the first two paragraphs, I won't comment much on it as it seemed like it's critisizm based on partially your personal beliefs.

Reason: Typo
I found her game knowledge to be adequate. Too adequate in fact. Sometimes i think she should be an engineer rather than a caster.
But she did manage to mix in some humour there instead of constantly droning on about strategy, so ok plus for me. She should really stop calling players by the race they play and use their names tho
What, "beep beep I'm not a hellion I'm a go-kart", and "this isn't a map but a street"? How redundant can that get? This is SC2 at its highest level, not The Daily Show on Comedy Central. It would've been fine if it was part of the Day9 Funday Monday but that comedy doesn't belong to GSL.
<== is a total Dune nerd and has read all the books.
But I digress. I think I already pointed out that she lacks professionalism, game knowledge and game sense. Her redundant rambling was an attempt to cover for her lack of knowledge and I think that has got to stop. I don't know if I'm making an erroneous analogy here but I can't help but to see parallels between the redundancies in Kelly's casting and the amount of evangelizing praise our politicians have been heaping upon our ridiculous Budget 2011.
It became painfully clear to be that she was trying to compensate for her lack of analysis of what was going on in the game, and so was it clear to me that our budget was a crock of horse manure which our politicians tried to neutralize the stink with their most puissant of praises.

From that response It's obvious you don't take criticism very well. I just hope you have thick skin .
You have to admit there is a over whelming amount of criticism (mostly hate) coming from everywhere. Even in your own SEA forums. TL has a thread over 60 pages devoted to just criticism. The GOM forums are just out of control. I don't understand why people think she just needs time to improve. Kelly has had this style of casting for a long time now. I don't see it changing in less than a month.
The biggest thing that concerns me is how fast she talks during a battle. I can understand what you're saying during slow parts in the game, but once someone starts to attack I have no idea what she says. Call it stim-voice or whatever, giving it a cute name doesn't help anything. Honestly that is just the biggest problem I have, I could list many other minor things, but there is no reason they are all over the other forums.
Anyway Kelly I bet it sounds like I just got 4 gateway rushed or 6 pooled to you, but you should really think about reaching out the SC2 community somehow if you want their respect.
Dude you don't make sense. Stop talking.
This is actually what the above poster meant in his analogy
1 - You rambled because your game knowledge isn't very large.
2 - This rambling was redundant (not useful in any way shape or form).
3 - You are being praised for great commentating.
(analogy begins now)
4 - The 2011 Budget is a horrible failure.
5 - The politicians love the budget and are praising it as a success.
Do you understand how the original poster was making a valid point in his post?
What you (kelly) fail to realize is that criticism of you isn't based solely on you being a girl, or having a hard to understand accent or lack of game knowledge.
The issue of sex isn't an issue at all. Im a guy and would love to see more female casters.
The issue of your accent is of significant importance. You are casting in English for an English audience. If that audience cannot understand you clearly then that is a huge problem.
The issue of your game knowledge is also of significant importance. You are casting Starcraft 2 games for what is easily the grandest SC2 tournament in the world. Mistakes in casting make it difficult to enjoy a game being played. ( i think the biggest was mixing up what colour loner and august were in their game (i think it was those two players)).
What i think bothers a large section of the community is your personality. Your character.
You run a blog site called http://fuckslits.tumblr.com/. Can you please explain your choice of id there? And your nickname is Kelly MILKIES which the word milkies relates to breasts. Was there any reason why your nickname wasn't talked about during your cast? Tasteless and Artosis are referred to by their nicknames not Dan and Nick. Any reason you weren't referred to as KellyMILKIES?
So you choose to associate yourself with words like "fuckslits" and "MILKIES".
You had a post in the above blog where stated (and i quote) "I'm going to shine so ******* bright that i'm going to ******* blind you". Who are you trying to "******* blind"? (note - obviously the "*******" is a naughty word that has been censored by this forum)
You also have a blog at http://www.kellymilkies.blogspot.com/ where you titled it as ";;scadals fit for a queen". What scandals are going on? And they are fit for a Queen? Wow Queen Elizabeth II has nothing on you.
These are one of the key requirements for successful and fun casting.
You need to have the professionalism associated with GSL, easily the Grandest SC2 tournament in the world.
That is one of the problems you need to work on Kelly.
p.s. It looks like Kelly is trying to cover up some of her tracks as lots of posts in her blog sites are disappearing or being re-named/worded. I wonder if GOM made her do it?

Give her a break, she actually did alright last night.
Of course we would feel somewhat uneasy about the reduction of casting quality because we are so used to the perfect chemistry and high quality casting by Tastosis. Note that they are so good strongly due to the fact they have worked with each other for such a long time and have lots of experience. With Tasteless already helping her out significantly last night, I don't doubt her casting will be more enjoyable down the road. So she doesn't have the tip-top game knowledge(although adequate) nor the professionalism we are used to - Some would say these are criteria for casting such high profile events such as GSL, some things she says do make me cringe and her pitchy voice/accent is sometimes a little too much but towards the end of last night we could see her being much more comfortable in her role, developing chemistry with Tasteless, smiling more, and altogether not sounding half bad.
Instead of insulting her accent, why not just laugh along with it, and enjoy it. I must have laughed for 1 hour straight after hearing her say that Huk made a "Duck Shrine". If casters are meant to be provide entertainment, it is fair to say that I was entertained by her own unique way. Though of course just like the rest of us, I would like to see the the more important aspects of casting to be more refined when she has the Mic.
There are a lot of criticism about her not taking criticism well - I'm pretty sure when criticism comes in the form of 43487853737579983 posts and endless taunting, disrespect and insults, anyone would lose their cool. If anyone thinks they are saying anything new when commentating on how "bad" they think her casting is, she has heard it 4573345858773 times before, it doesn't help. Some tips, hints, help and encouragement would be so much more useful than the common "omg cant understand her wtff!!!"
Like her or not, shes casting our GSL, the best we can do is continue to support and encourage her.

I do support kelly otherwise i wouldnt have spent HOURS upon HOURS helping her get her setup her origional streaming rig to get practice on. I wouldnt have done that if i didnt see potential, however kelly your attitude does need to be adjusted slightly, you are now being PAID to cast, so any criticism even if it seems unreasonable should be worked on to improve, im sure tasteless and artosis are there to help in any way they can and I can help when i can aswell, but please dont ever disregard a post again like you did above as he did have a very valid point.

Please remove the stick from your ass and drop the pretentious prose. It has to be tough living with such high standards but there's no need to vent on someone doing their best at something they love. Maybe try dropping the hate and do something productive with that intellect of yours
Basically, Kelly's casting doesn't deserve this sort of blanket criticism and to liken it to a crock of shit is just retarded.

*shrugs* When I worked for Colosseum, it became my business to know of all aspects of gaming in the region, so I won't admit that I know everything. While I'm now focused on college and writing for The Online Citizen I still care enough about gaming when I see a train wreck waiting to happen, or to check on how my mates in Bf.Nut are faring.
But honestly, gaming in SG has barely developed past its most basic of stages and has been hampered by nonsense like Rapture Gaming incompetence in organizing WCG and the proliferation of F2P games. This latest development simply isn't the correct step forward.

Dude, you're tripping over your words in an attempt to sound intellectual. Just say what you want to say straight up, and at least you won't seem like an elitist arsehole.

Why, thank you. I'm no stranger to being labelled an elitist from the way I speak and my usage of vocabulary, but mainly the "elitist" word pops up right away the moment people discover the sort of school I came from.
But really, excuse me for caring about gaming in Singapore. Perhaps I ought to join the men in white and have an easier life smiling and nodding while everyone enjoys their backslapping and lovebombing.

Sure, you may be 'using vocabulary', but you're not using it well. And go ahead, draw completely random points from what I said. Because I clearly accosted you for caring about gaming in Singapore.

this is silly, he used perfectly appropprate vocabulary. I dont see how someone using vocabulary which the lowest common denominator of people dont grasp doesnt mean he should stop using it, it means other people should raise their knowledge.
Today's casting was fine considering it was day one, but there's still a lot of room for improvement. At least you can see that she's put in effort to improve her casting abilities. Some things just can't be changed after a day (e.g. pronunciation of certain words) so it's all okay.
MUCH better than i expected seriously, thank goodness. Its very good that SEA/SG now has a significantly larger slice of the e-sports contribution pie. If Kelly can keep this up i believe they wont need to recruit more Code A casters ^^
Kelly did better than people expected her to :> Saying stuff like racecars is something people dislike, but that's her casting style. If people hate it, we just gotta let that fly. Sometimes I don't like Tasteless nasally voice but that's me.
Thanks GOM....now I have all the code A matches muted because I can't listen to this. Neither can my friends that used to come watch GSL with me on my big screen. I doubt GOM's sponsors want the stream to be muted but o'well. I have nothing against Kelly, I just want someone that talks clearly and maybe being a better player then I am instead of a worse player would be a bonus.
OK. I admit it. First post. And I'm not from SEA. And I made this account just to post about this. (although it's quite the cool community now that I looked around)
Everyone has flaws. In fact Artosis himself made a "critique my commentary" thread on teamliquid. People talked about what he and tasteless needed to do more, artosis said they were working on it, admitted fault, etc etc...
Many excellent commentators applied for the position, and in my opinion, kellyMilkies was not the person for the job. Call it my stupid american bias or whatnot, but I find the voice straining (not impossible) to understand, and I find the level of analysis and style of commentary to be off. Moletrap ( youtube.com/moletrapsc2 ) whom I hold in high esteem applied, and did not get the position.
But I was more than willing to let her take a shot at the position. If she takes constructive criticism into account and seems like she's making an effort to improve, that's fine. If she's professional about it ( www.fuckslits.tumblr.com and the username kellyMILKIES?) and acknowledges that there are many valid concerns about her, I'm quite happy to let her work at it.
But what we've seen here is kellymilkies attempt to not only suppress criticism, but also attack those who do not care for her style. We've seen her tell people here to stop, and that they are acting like thye ahve just been six pooled.
Although I at this point do not want kellymilkies in the position she holds, I do have advice for her: take advice. Admit you aren't perfect. Don't act like somebody stuck up who merely insults anyone so depraved as to not care for her.
Unfortunately I've just been 6 pooled by imba zerg, so maybe it'll sound angry.
Seeing as nobody has really given advice yet...
1) Slow down a bit
2) Become a bit more familiar with unit names. Try to ladder some if you have the time. With tasteless/artosis yous houldn't be lacking for strategy advice. In any case, just get a better handle on the game.
3) Your professionalism comes off as poor. A few less cute jokes ><
4) Maybe just try and immerse yourself in british or american culture some. Hopefully can get rid of the much hated accent
5) Don't say haters gonna hate. ><
6) don't talk over tasteless with umm, err, I see, etc. I know from my limited casting experience it's easy to do, but definitely try and avoid it.
7) don't act quite as entitled.

Kelly did not respond to the over whelming majority of the hate/criticism on this thread. She responded to one that did in fact not make sense. Since she never told everyone to shut up, I see no reason forposting like she did.
I have read through the TL threads on this particular subject. There was a lot of hate but there was just as much, if not more, support. The overwhelming consensus was simply "she's alright".
Kelly did an okay job in casting Code A last night, it wasnt too bad. Her game knowledge is adequate, she knows enough about starcraft 2 to be able to cast Code A. She doesnt need to know everything as she will be casting will Artosis and Tasteless any way, so her game knowlege is adequate. People like JP and DJWheat do not know a ton about the game but they have enough game knowledge and make fine co-casters for someone like Day9.
I think Kelly's main problem would be her accent. Her accent is understandble but it can be hard for alot of people and sometimes some people do need to guess some of her pronunciations. But if Kelly talks slowly and more clearly (possibly try to improve pronunciations) then she would have no problems casting code A games.
Hmm... Kelly on a side note, regardless of what people are expressing (both positive and negative) I hope you are mentally prepared for dealing with the internet audience. It's not like having a few negative people around school or at the office. Its an army of people who know how they like things and you're damned if you don't agree. Don't let the negativity get you down, no matter how overwhelming it may seem, just filter out things you want to take on board and try to ignore the rest. At the end of the day your work will speak for itself, and what more can really be expected than doing your best?
I think people really underestimate how much pressure is put on a person when a huge group starts posting negative opinions about you from the comfort of there computer. You have to be mentally tough, and stick it out though to come out the other side. Also remember you generally only hear the complainers, the happy people don't feel the need to go express themselves generally.
Stay positive Kelly and turn this into a launching pad that will make others marvel ;]
Maybe I'm not being clear enough. There's nothing wrong with the words he's using, but his last paragraph was horrible English. If you're going to communicate with complex or advanced English, you should at least get the basic sentence structure correct. And what Pinder said too, this is a casual internet forum, where people are just trying to get their message across, not exactly somewhere you need to showoff with fancy words.
First off, congrats to Kelly. I would only say that you might want to tune out of the forums for a while and focus on casting. Forums can be distracting, to say the least.
I'm still mixed about the decision GOM made, but as mOOnGLaDe wrote, I feel that the SEA community should still support her because of the community she represents. I don't think there's much of a conflict there.
And if you don't want GOM to die (and I sincerely doubt it will), you should support GOM. Quite honestly, I would rather watch some high-level games than no games. I've already bought the ticket, and you should too. Anyway, mOOnGLaDe is playing, and we should support that, if anything else.
Yeah if i were Kelly i wudnt even be reading this, until at least after the job is over. Its like having my final exams next day and my friends and family are going I THINK U GONNA FAIL JUST GO FAIL LOL
And i think the site name is cool seriously; it definitely has an anti-suicide feel to it, which is good. Like fuckslits dude!
I also disagree that i did not try to give advice -_- I just tried politely to fit them into a conversation like most normal people do. Not create a list! wth
Yeah if i were Kelly i wudnt even be reading this, until at least after the job is over. Its like having my final exams next day and my friends and family are going I THINK U GONNA FAIL JUST GO FAIL LOL
Actually, a better analogy would be if you're studying for exams and your examiner walks in and says, "Wow you're ******* stupid. You clearly have no ******* clue how to speak French and you're totally going to fail tomorrow. In fact I probably shouldn't let you sit the oral exam, but i'll just let you sit and if you fail i'll make you wait a few months before you try again."
Sure, the examiner is probably out of line for being overly aggressive but it's the examiner who is inevitably going to judge you afterwards. If you want to pass the exam, then isn't it a little smarter to listen to the underlying problems the examiner has with your presentation?
On top of that, going out of your way to tell the examiner that he has no clue what he is talking about is outright stupid if the 'exam' is subjective. It just gives them more reason to fail you?
If I were Kelly right now, I would be thinking long and hard before posting anything. I might even consult a friend or third party before posting replies on forums.
If you want to critisize do it constructively, like unstable and rielle/froadac(after i edited them) have done in their long posts on the previous page.
Yes, well. I probably shouldn't say anything at all since all people link to outside of this forum out of context that makes me look like an a-hole and I can't take criticisms.
I have a lot of people helping me in Korea they are all that matters at the moment. A lot of points people pointed out I am already working on.
People don't seem to link all the more, how to you put it, genuine stuff I say. They take only the bad context out and screenshot it and copy paste it to other places.
I am honestly working really hard in Korea. I I am having fun on screen but off screen I spend a lot of time working on my accent, speed, enunciation etc. I have people in Korea that are speaking to me ala a semi-English class everyday so I can adopt the more acceptable way of saying certain words and units.
To clear a major point up, I obviously know what a Hellion is. And I do not say Bruu. I say Blue. As for Zealots, I discussed this before my casts whether to say zee-lot or zeh-lert and apparently zee-lot is ok, which was why I went with it.
The reason why I am replying here and not on TL is that nobody will care what I say there. Also, this is my own community, I care about what my community thinks a lot. I know there are certain stuff I need to work on, but understand that some things that people say are just out right hate and uncalled for aggressiveness. The people who are extremely harsh to me already have a fixed mindset that I don't think I can change at the moment.
I am going to watch my VODs now and see what I can improve on. So I will write later.

Probably, but on the other hand there are people on the opposite extreme as well who will shower you with compliments no matter what you do.
Surely you cannot dismiss all of those points as "taking things out of context"? Surely you must realise that poster raises some very legitimate points in regards to what your motives are and the (allegedly) devious methods you have used to draw attention to yourself, which seem to supersede your casting abilities?
This is not a criticism nor an implication but a legitimate question which I would love to be addressed. In fact ideally you would address each of those points, as they are quite interesting.
PS. For the love of all christ stop saying things along the lines of "race X builds Y and there's like nothing race Z can do about it". If you want to learn things from Artosis, please learn the good stuff and not the bad stuff. And even Artosis never dares to hint at imbalance when casting - this is probably the #1 thing that could make you lose your new casting job.

I believe she got chastised by unstable, another AU commentator, for this. There's no need to keep flogging the issue. I think it's safe to say she's open to criticism, but do you like if someone keeps nagging for you to change the same thing over again? It becomes counter-productive after a while.

I...don't quite understand your point?
This is not critisism, these are actually quite valid and legitimate questions. And I don't see why the "issues" should not be "flogged" considering they haven't even been addressed?
NEWater, you linked this thread on TL to let people know they can 'deliver [their] criticism directly to her'. Great, we all really wanted this site turning into TL. Kelly has received enough criticism already, you don't need to bring half of TL over here. Glad to see that some of the people who did come over actually have some sense though.
I think a lot it was to do with expectations. Everyone was expecting Artosis and Tasteless, not Kelly and Tasteless. The comparisons with everyone else started escalating until it reached epic proportions. I'm not saying she shouldn't improve, but the community should least try to speed that process up by mitigating excessive negativity.
So I say leave it to GOM and Tastosis to help her with her casting. If she focuses and practices, she'll be good in no time.
And to Kelly: Don't forget the Tastosis jokes! The winning build is always the Tasteless Build!
Kelly, last night was an amazing job. We could see you were slightly nervous to begin with, but you delivered a top class casting performance.
Congratulations on the awesome cast and can't wait til next Code A day.
One thing I agree with from a friend is taking some more breaths when the exciting parts happen, you get excited and out of breath and can't cast as much as the previous minutes of the match.
Very well done
Please link where Kelly stated that they had no clue what they were talking about.
She stated a post which had no real point or clarity was just that, unclear and pointless.
Again, if you want to critique her, feel free. At least keep the critiques in the realm of reality though. Don't critique her for something she did not do.
I have to say, though, Kelly's improved tenfold over her previous casts. Sure, I miss the Artosis' in-depth analysis, but that shouldn't take anything away from Kelly's improvements.
New to thread - I read 6 pages of this and just gave up because it was stupid. There are pros and cons about everything. Obviously, Kelly has a different accent, unlike the ones from America or Australia. But as someone new to the "casting society in SEA" (which is me), I find that Kelly is one of the popular ones from SEA and again, sexism - LETS FACE IT - it's everywhere. And honestly, it is smart of GOM to make a change and add a female voice into commentating, because it definitely starts something new for the Starcraft community, also promoting girls playing Starcraft.
I KNOW - people are gonna shout at me and say crap that I'm NEW to SEA at casting or whatever, but honestly, I am proud for the casting society of SEA to have somebody enter the GSL. As we all love to hear, SC2 is an INTERNATIONAL game. So what's wrong with having different accents in a game that is played worldwide?
I stand on both sides, I agree and disagree with this decision, but as many posts before has stated, I believe that Kelly will rise to the occasion of being in a professional tournament.

Never do that, its like interrupting someone half way thru a sentance and going I know what your going to say, when you dont, page 7 is where some actualy positive constructive disscussion happened(not much but some)

Who would you say are capable? And who would you say are not capable?
Who would you say are capable? And who would you say are not capable?
I've no idea who in SEA casts at the moment.
Benji and pheonix work hard at it casting well, kelly did some stuff before she went to gsl, If i had time i would but im flat out with FXOpen events atm and if mezza ever comes out of hiding he could too after some brush up prac.
Never do that, its like interrupting someone half way thru a sentance and going I know what your going to say, when you dont, page 7 is where some actualy positive constructive disscussion happened(not much but some)

First of all, the point of me putting this through is to just my own opinion, I'm not saying it in response to anyone in this thread - i just want to voice out my opinion, because every message is almost going in different directions. I'm sorry if I didn't read the 10 pages of arguements that don't change the results of anything.
Well, what I've only got that information off of youtube bro, don't have to be so excluding about the casting community.
The thing is Unstable, if the voices of masses (which will always be the westerners) dislike asian accents which Kelly only BARELY has, does it mean we asians, never get to cast professional games because of our accents?
I'm buying a ticket for GOM so I can watch Kelly and GlaDe. I've listened to some of Kelly's other casts and I think she's A-OK and I grew up in country Australia. Glad to hear that they are investing in you Kelly and sounds like you have the right attitude to go far with it.
GO SEA!!
PS I love you Nirvana for using the word douche in a mod post haha

After watching the cast last night, i must admit, i am very impressed with how kelly did. And although i agree with alot of other people that the accent gets a little hard to understand especially during high action packed moments where Kelly gets really excited, i think she has HUGE potential, and i think the accent will diminish over time as she gets more experiance. I look forward to watching keely improve as a caster.
On a side note, the flirting with tasteless...... don't, he's married to Artosis.
Kelly you did a great job last night! You're commentary was superb, you picked up on some of the tactical situations that tasteless missed and u spoke clearly. I'm not just saying this cos you're SEA. You seriously did a great job and I've actually noticed a big increase on forums with people supporting you. Just the closet racists are left...
Love how you made a good joke about July and August and it went straight over Tastless' head Kelly Just one suggestion I'd like to give is to relax your body language a bit. You were doing a lot of pointing at the camera which seemed to show your nervousness.
Oh i also wanted to say to everyone giving advice about little things she could improve. I think its best to just let her ease into the job without the thousands of criticisms shes got mostly about being nervous on her FIRST day on tV! Who wouldn't be!
Im sure she'll be better than tasteless in no time, and the games are much more exciting with someone who avoids artosis style of "This player will win because of X and Y" analysis, which, whilst very often correct, sucks some of the fun and excitement out of this spectator sport.
in anycase, i think the key points to improve is vocabulary and pronunciation. i did managed to catch a short moment of code A in action yesterday night and i've to say the pronunciation is pretty horrible and quite a pain for my pairs of ears as i'm used to the casting by A&T.
however, with benefit of doubt.. and as a singaporean like you do, i will still support my country mate disregard to any scarasm or critics.
Sorry I misclicked the reply button and hit the thumbs-down button instead!
I think you might have heard of TotalBiscuit. Sure he's Australian, but we're on the same servers, so we're sharing him bwahahahahaha.
TB is british but yes lets claim him as an aussie 8D...
I didn't get the chance to see Kelly cast, last night was it? but you seem to working really hard to get even better at casting, It's good to know your having fun with it :3

oops. having lived in london myself, how the hell did i miss that! lol.
yeah, death to the heretic! TB should choke me!
I'm so glad i found this place. It's like the Kelly thing on TL showed me that there's a community here too! So thanks Kelly! You showed me the way to SC2SEA!
I was so depressed, i'm the only player still playing among friends. But am happy now! (i'm a dinosaur in trying to play that's probably why...) You guys are so great and so supportive of the scene and the forum peeps too.

I don't want to sound too negative about this but, I would like to be inclined to say YES in a broad spectrum - largely including things outside of gaming. If we take real sports for example, which has been around for a loooong time, there is really very little chance that they would hire someone with even a moderate Asian accent to broadcast on TV.
Gaming is actually already INCREDIBLY accepting towards accents - people like Kelly, Ipp, etc. all cast on their own personal channels. I ADORED KLAZART. People complain little on these, because it his their own stream, their own turf. However, when you add to the mix a event considered to be the top-tier, prestigious and top of the line; they expect a certain level of calibre that people can look up to. You want to see the Day9's, DJWheat's, Tasteless up there to hold up to that very prestige. People are complaining because why should such an event be a testing ground for someone who is unproven?
I hate using myself as an example, but I have casted some really awesome offline tournaments in the past for Warcraft III - eg. BlizzCon or GGL in Korea multiple times. Do I think I am suitable for it? No dude, I think my voice is shrill as hell, murder for some people; and my accent is far from perfect, on top of that, I also have a slight lisp to top everything off.
When people come to me to ask these events, the first thing I say to them is: "ARE YOU SURE? I'm pretty terrible." Because I know I have absolutely no talent to be the next big broadcaster/shoutcaster, this I know for sure. I do not have the voice, nor the charisma to be amazing to listen to. I did shoutcasting way back then (2006-2008) because I was deeply ingrained in the WC3 community and it was something I did to provide a service, rather than a personal gain fame or money. I never aspired to be a professional shoutcaster. I never asked for payment or a salary, because I-am-not-a-professional-caster and I will never call myself as such due to the reasons outlined above.
BUT the main difference here is, back in WC3, there was a complete lack of people who used to do this because they know they can never get the same number of hits, nor the following which SC2 has right now -- the scene in SC2 is apeshit insane for such a short amount of time. Shoutcasters are a penny a dozen compared to WC3 (lucky for me!) -- so I think it's not unfair that people would prefer a neutral accent on an event they consider to be of the highest level.
So I'd be perfectly candid, and Kelly is a friend of mine IRL, that I think she is not up to par for GSL standards because people are expecting the best from GSL. I laugh at the memes, I laugh at duck shrine, because they are freaking hilarous, friend or no friend. And this is OK - because if GSL was any other backyard production then no one would even make a big deal out of this. BUT... I'm REALLY happy for Kelly that she is casting in GSL, because this is basically living her dream and something she really wanted to do every since StarCraft came out. All transpiring events became pretty fortuitous that led her to get that spot. Let's not rag on someone who has decided to DO SOMETHING THEY WANT TO DO.
So I think this entire post has derailed from my original quote, and has become longer than all my posts in the forum combined. ;>
Anyway, being an old fogey in the gaming community - I would just like to say, please don't be malicious in the words you say or use. If we dislike a caster, it is our right; but disliking/hating can be done with taste, no need to lash out at people.

Just Uke along with your commentary and your accent is less noticeable.
And it's funny because there's casters on GLHF.tv and stuff whose accents add personality to the cast. However, Singaporean/Malaysian accents probably rate somewhere near the worst in the world for casting.
Not everyone is bad though, I mean an interview of Linda Liao popped up on Facebook and I expected to hear some pretty terrible English, but overall her accent is far more comprehendible than Kelly's even though I'm pretty certain that Linda's overall English would be worse.
I must say, at first I was a big stickler of you casting code A. The first week, I couldn't handle it. I don't think you did very well that first week.
However I am watching last nights code A and I must say, I see improvement. I really didn't think you could do it, and showing improvement in only 1 day, that's really impressive so hats off to you. The whole stim-talk thing.. didn't even notice that once. Very good job controlling that.
I do have some gripes still that I think you could really easily fix...
1. You still keep calling the players by their race, ie. The terran is moving out, when it should be Virus or ST_Virus is moving out (no need to say the team really). You never said Zerg for Moon, but that's probably because I'm sure you've casted Moon a lot. This is really my number 1 problem.
2. This is a big one for me anyway, you seem to like saying "he was like this...". I don't know if it's a girl thing lol, but the whole "he was all like this with that".
3. You also sometimes state the obvious and keep talking about it. On the moon game, you said Moon likes to go bangling, muta.. well yeah that's what every Zerg does and you said he could scout with an overlord.. Then on ST_ACE v. Coca at the end you were like I think the Zerg players got this, right after he took out Ace only mining base and lost his whole army, of course he had it.
Anyway last one is kind just something annoys me, it's noob friendly to say that kind of stuff, but honestly do that many noobs watch the GSL?
I haven't seen all the games yet, but Kelly you are doing an OK job. With some more practice I think you could do well here. I'm still not convinced 100%, but I do feel bad about all the hate you've been getting. I hope it gets better for you, because that's just hard to get better when everyone is basically telling you that you never can.
I'm really looking forward to seeing you with Artosis, I actually think the two of you will work better than Tasteless and you. It's too bad he is sick, though. Anyway just keep learning, I'd suggest even trying to play some on korean ladder and find out what builds are current. That's the stuff we like to hear, new strats and build orders going on. Keep it up HF GL XD.
Oh yeah I heard Moletrap is coming to Korea... know anything about that?

I was thinking the same thing, then I watched YugiOh vs Leenock.
I was really frustrated with Kelly's casting. Beyond the things that have been brought up before (talking about obvious things for too long, echoing tasteless, calling players by colors makes it feel like she's unfamiliar with the players, etc) some stuff she said was just straight up in accurate. The most glaring example was game 2 at the end when she definitively said YugiOh had no upgrades but he actually had 2-1 (while she said that the observer clicked on one of YugiOh's roaches, lol). Another was saying speedling upgrade + banelings nest = speed banes. She was saying (and reiterated later) that Leenock could've ended the game at 17min, but there's no way his roach army could've broken the spines/roaches/infestors of YugiOh. Also, not every natural expansion is a fast expansion. There were a couple more things but I don't feel like rewatching just for the sake of criticism.
She seemed a little better in terms of theory in the previous games, idk what happened that made the casting of the last match weaker.
To be fair, the observer was horrible at the beginning of the last GSL and now does a really good job and even occasionally brings viewers' attention to important things, so there's definitely a learning curve to casting live with the pressure of so many viewers and TL.
Why do they not call you kellyMILKIES on the the cast? They just call you Kelly. You call Tasteless by his nickname so curious why they don't call you by your nickname?

LOL
I'm pretty sure they don't say it on-air because Milkies is slang for boobs, tits, titties, breasts, boob milk. They could always use her blog name FUCKSLITS..
Wait probably not XD

That would just be so funny if they used her names... Tasteless would have a field day and Kelly can make some jokes out of her names too haha. I would laugh so hard.
Kelly, you're doing a great job! More relaxed this time! Keep improving!
Over the game of leenock vs yugioh, you kept using blue zerg/red zerg, instead of their names.
example :"the red zerg has gotten a baneling nest"
well it may seem alright to you, but as viewers, we have to take the initiative to find out who the red zerg is, which imo, isnt nice
note to improve :use the players name instead of their colours/race
Also, im not sure if its professional to use the term "toss" ie "the toss is getting his expansion" for such a big event like the GSL. then again, if u have used the player names instead of their race, problem solved.
At the same time, your self marketing is a major concern. your image isnt very nice due to the milkies/fuckslits. how do u reach out to the people outside sea, how do u gain their support/love? there are young kids out there playing SC2 as well, mind you.
Sorry if this sounded harsh, but i do hope u take into regard
To address some of your issues. The terms I use have been discussed prior to the cast. I am suppose to say blue / red zerg because for people it will be easier to see on the screen. As viewers, there is always going to be 2 side, example "Why does she keep saying leenock, I have to scroll over to see what their names are."
^ example shows that there is going to be different response to how I call out the players.
I will keep in mind not to use Toss if you feel it's such a big issue. That can be fixed easily.
As for self marketing, fuckslits was my old blog name and mostly only my friends read it. I have since changed it to my nick name.
For Milkies, I am sorry. I don't see what the big deal is unless your mind is already set on it to be something other than a nick I used to use for a MMORPG named RoseOnline which then stuck.
It is not meant to be what you might be thinking it is -o-"
My friends all decided to use the nick name ****ies.
There were Drummies, Smarties, Yukies, Panties, Cookies, and I decided to use Milkies -o-
Hope that clears up some issues

Are you really saying that the GOM staff wants you to not say the players names when you're casting, and just call them by what race they are?
I don't understand why they would want you to do that for Code A, when Artosis and Tasteless always use the players name during the cast. Also you're example of us having to scroll over the units to see the players name doesn't really make sense, since we can see the names on the top of the screen. It also shows what color and race they are along side there name.
Plus we don't even control the camera obviously so we wouldn't be able to scroll over the units to see the name in the first place. That is why they have the scoreboard thing on the top of the screen like I said.
I think you are doing a better job than you did on the first day. You've improved slowing down and not getting too excited.
It was funny Tasteless on game 3 Rain vs. Yeah when you said Tore and he laughed at you. You should smack him next time he does that.
Okay so... I just watched the moonglade vs zenexjjun and you almost never said Zerg player, you said his name. You didn't do the same for the "Terran player" aka ZenexJJun.

Couple of things
- Should really stop saying whats REALLY obvious like - Haypros mutas are now trying to scout for information (repeat 3+ times), Zergs gona get banelings. like... we know. Its good to state it occasionally, but repeating it a couple of times in each game on a similar screen? Just no.
-If your commenting on a players style etc, dont use words like "always". use "most of the time or likely". "always" makes any commentators sound stupid.
- Try not to cut off Tasteles when he says stuff. unless its really important. So dont state the obvious when his saying something.. its really annoying (no offence). You'll notice that Tastees doesnt cut off you unless its rally important.
Basically should just watch your own casts on GSL. And well... criticise yourself.
Good luck.
Great opportunity for you; congratulations. It is good to see someone flying the flag for our region, especially now that the NASL has been announced. Whether or not your casting brings increased attention to SEA SC2 is neither here nor there; the important thing is that we keep involving ourselves with the rest of the international community if we want to grow. We are never going to have the same pull as the Korean/North American/European scene.
Your casting has taken a bit of getting used to so far (even though I'm from Australia and have several friends from Singapore and Malaysia) and I'll confess that I've joked about your first few casts a bit with my other SC2 friends, but live it up and enjoy the experience of being in the thick of the international game.
The chemistry that Tasteless and Artosis have is something that would be nigh-on impossible to replicate or transcend. Just keep on doing your thing; haters are always going to hate. What anyone thinks is immaterial; the fact is that you have a contract and you're honouring it. It's an added bonus that you're trying to get feedback and are listening to ideas of how to improve and be more accessible to westerners (i.e. the target audience of the English-speaking GSL casting); can't really ask more of anyone than for them to strive for self-improvement.
So why do they call you kelly instead of kellymilkies at Gom? Are you saying you have effectively changed your ID, and if so why is it not changed here?
This is the 3rd or 4th day I hear Kelly cast. So far I think she improved a lot since the 1st day.
I'm fine with her accent (guess because I used to study in Singapore.. feel so sad because I have to play in NA server now). Yea, I agree with some people that sometimes she mispronounce. Professional commentator is a tough job, especially if it's international as people expect a lot from her.
One of my friend streamed HQ GSL today on TL and 700 people watched it (unfortunately it was blocked by GomTV in 3rd game). And the only things they talked are how bad her pronunciation is. Well, at least there're 700 people love her
I have to agree with ricemuncher above.
You do tend to overstate the obvious.
Good effort on the casts, you're no tasteless- But then again he's been doing casting for a hell of a long time.
With time I think you'll make a great caster when you're more relaxed and comfortable.

Voice and expression-wise yeah it is hard to be on Tasteless' level, he's great to listen to
However game analyis: Kelly > Tasteless.
I love him, but the amount of things he says that are just plain wrong does get to me sometimes!
Sometimes I even feel Kelly is better then Artosis at focusing on battle positioning when he seems to ignore it, though overall he is the starcraft knowledge-god and a great zergtoss.
But overall I agree give it time and Kelly will be a great all-round caster
Her doing an interview with moonglade. Moonglade seems like a pretty decent guy and I wish him the best of luck. Kelly on the other hand is abit awkward at times.
'How do you feel about the initial flaming on TL?' 'I feel very happy about it!!'
'How have you prepared for your code A match on friday? Brian you are like the worst question writer on earth. Of course hes been practicing.'
First off, congrats to Kelly for getting the gig, and all zee best in this new experience.
Next, I echo some earlier comments where it'd be good for the viewers if the commentators don't simply state the obvious, but instead 'paint up' a story to 'mess up' the viewers' imagination. Tastosis and Day9 were masters of this 'commentating' skill and I suppose it'll take a bit of time to adjust to a different level of commentating, as portrayed by Kelly.
She's still young, so she can only get better, especially her diction and clarity. Less slurring, less 'kentang-slanging', and more emotions into her casting/commentating and she'll do awesome.
I like how you lot fill it up with criticism and i get labeled flame? XD
Your post was nothing else than you telling us about your latest masturbating habits. Keep it to yourself, we don't need to know. Now, Mr. Fap, meet Mr. KY, have fun and GTFO. Thank you.
A Singaporean commentating in one of the world's biggest computer gaming leagues is getting flak for her supposedly incomprehensible pronunciation.
Ms. Kelly Ong, 21, is the only Singaporean working in the GOMTV Global StarCraft II League (GSL), a large tournament-based league held on location in Seoul, SouthKorea.
With 64 international gamers and $$158,000 in prize money for every tournament, it is broadcast on GOMtv.net six nights a week. It is now in its 6th season and the International GSL website draws 100,000 viewers daily.
The GSL claims to be the highest paying tournament in e-sports. Its commentators are a mix of nationalities, from Korean to American to Singaporean Ms Ong, who is better known by her handle kellyMILKIES.
Her appointment had itself generated controversey, with numerous gamers protesting over her "thick accent" and saying in various forums that she is "difficult to understand".
She has been on the job for more than a week and the criticism, mainly from Western gamers, has continued to pour in. One Singaporean poster even accused her of having a fake Australian accent.
However, other gamers have defended her commentating style.
In an email interview with LifeStyle, Ms Ong said that she received many "horrible, horrible emails" even before her first broadcast. But she is unfazed by the more extreme comments, "It's just the Internet talking."
"I think the spotlight is on me because I have an Asian accent and I am female. That makes me an auto-target in a male-dominated environment."
She points out that she has previously worked with British bosses "who did not have a problem understanding me from day one".
Ms Ong, who was handpicked from hundreds of other commentators, or casters as they are called, is relishing the opportunity to work with the big boys. Signed up for this season, she is currently casting three games a week with a co-commentator.
She does not want to disclose her salary.
"GSL is the pinnacle of professional gaming, so to be able to be a commentator here has been phenomenal," she says.
She started gaming competitively in 2005 through the ubiquitous Counter-Strike before moving on to casting. She has also competed in and casted regional tournaments, such as the Colosseum Singapore SC2 LAN.
She completed her secondary school education before dropping out of a private diploma course to work.
Local gamers told LifeStyle that they could not understand the furore over Ms Ong's accent. Game developer Joanna Lee, 31, gave her a seven out of 10.
She says: "Kelly's pretty all right, except for her pronunciation, but I have seen worse. Maybe they are just not used to the Singaporean accent and are being a bit too critical.
"Female gamers tend to attract more attention because the arena is male-dominated."
Gamers say:
Mog[skynet] from Arizona:
I watched that whole replay and I think my ears are bleeding. There are parts where she's not bad, but when she starts trying to explain strategy and/or tlaks fast, I can't really understand her.
zedman1991 from Seattle:
I didn't htink it was TOO horrible, but she definitely needs to learn a bit more about the game. Some of it was unintelligible, and some of it wasn't really correct or was missing some important points.
BryanTan123 from Singapore:
I have no respect for u Kelly Ong. Your faux Australian accent is ******* irritating. U haf no right commentating in Code A.
An1Ma from the Netherlands:
Though she is not speaking English fluently, it is good enough for me and her looks are great as well.
Thowky in Britain:
She's not the best caster in the world but she's decent enough and her accent really isn't as strong as people make it out to be, certianly not as strong as a lot of UK and other accents I hear on a daily basis.
Lol she gets criticised for having an asian accent by Westerners, and when she tries adapting that accent she gets criticised by asians for having a fake aussie accent....
We can fix the ST Life! article. If we show overwhelming support for Kelly in well-worded forum letters, there's a strong chance that the positive reactions will be published in this coming Sunday's Life!. Please do not tarry writing the letters, and send them in by Tuesday or Wednesday. Please send them to Nicholas Yong at nicy@sph.com.sg regarding 'Game Off for Asian Accent'.
Some pointers: Article balance, unfair/ unbalanced headline, un-nationalistic headline approach to the issue.

ke_ivan, the article is fine, there's nothing wrong with it. The story wouldn't be picked up if it was just about Kelly going to GSL -- but criticism about the accent is, considering how the Singapore government is pushing for 'better english' campaigns. This is probably the main reason why the story was able to get there in the first place.
I think people shouldn't look at this article so negatively. What I get out of it is:
1) sg girl has accent
2) sg girl gets flamed
3) sg girl gets a prestigious job despite the accent
4) sg and sg girl still wins
No offense, but no need to go all out white knight to the writer for writing such an article.

True, the article was balanced, but the headline was not. I was quite angry when I read the headline. The Sunday Editor was trying to sell papers with and provoke debate with that headline. I think there'll be people who will agree to the flaming. We should be the ones who "balance" it. Like SC2, you can't just think of the article as is, but the repercussions if they did promote forum replies. With forums open, you'll not only have linguists battling it out, but also people who already don't agree about her casting. We should show our support by pre-empting this and writing in. That's all I'm saying.
Has anyone watched any GSL Code A lately? It's getting better.
I thought Kelly has improved her 'stage presence' and has better diction of late. Still a bit of slurring once in a while, but overall, a whole lot of improvement from the nervy first few installments of the series. See guys, she can only get better~!
Oh, and do attempt to connect with Doa (who's not too bad either) with his corny jokes, otherwise you're making him look bad, when you don't play along~
Kelly just Tweeted - "You can't touch me because I am so high up above and you are so far down below. When I am flying, I feel nothing - I am invincible."
Hey, welcome back. I'd like to thank you for your heartwarming PM. Sadly, I have to decline your offer once again... Have fun getting your message edited/erased for the third time
