A rare and exciting opportunity has presented itself and I’m creating this thread to try and gauge the interest of people who would consider getting involved. This is still in the early stages of planning and nothing is final. I hope to receive more feedback and interest to see if it’s worth further pursuing this idea.
At the start of the year my family moved out and put our very large home in Chelmer Brisbane, onto the market. With the majority of my family reaching the age where we are moving out, my parents decided they no longer wanted to live in such a big house. However the house market, as many of you would know, is not in the greatest spot and our house has been unable to sell and my parents are worried that they will have to move back in. So we did some brainstorming and the idea came up that we might be able to start a gamers’ house.
Basically the rooms for rent will be:
The master bedroom (2 people)
5 single bedrooms (5 people)
1 large single bedroom (1 person)
1 long double room with 2 doors, one on either end, where a cupboard or something will be used to split this into 2 rooms (2 people)
Out of the 5 levels of the house, 4 of them have a bathroom, so each bathroom will be shared between 2 or 3 people, but no more then that.
There are 2 kitchens, a couple of lounge rooms and dining rooms. And lastly an extremely large room where we will be able to set up enough tables that people can bring their own computers and set up a gaming room.
So basically there is space for about 10 people. I’m still in the process of finding out what the city council regulations are for how many people you can have living in a house, but the more we can have, the better. By having a large number of people living/renting here, it means the cost shouldn’t grow too high once split by so many people. At the moment (and I re-emphasise this is all in the early planning stages so nothing concrete), we are looking at paying a base rent of about 110-130 dollars a week for the single rooms, the double room downstairs will be a bit cheaper and the master bedroom upstairs will be costing a bit more (but can be split between 2 people).
If these plans do go underway we will be upgrading our Internet, most likely to the fastest possible, to accommodate so many people using it at once.
Lastly we are literally across the road from the train station, a 1-minute walk. And 15 -20 minute ride to Central Station as well as walking distance to Indooroopilly Shopping centre.
I am fully aware that this is a far-fetched idea at this point in Australia E-Sports, but as I mentioned earlier, I consider this to be a really rare opportunity to explore this possibility. So if any of you would be interested, either living in Brisbane or not, leave a comment so I can see if this is an idea worth developing further.
Holy jesus christ that looks amazing!!! Seriously hope it all falls into place and you get 10 people that are willing to put in the hard work to make it worthwhile, goodluck

Cool my idea is trying to get a many starcraft players involved as possible then extending it to other PC games such as LoL
Only problem is sticking with Sc2 in Australia there wouldn't be many "big" Teams with alot of Sc2 players in them that could support the costs, Maybe iM off the top of my head.

Well thats why it doesnt have to just be Teams, looking for individual players, if a team does come then awesome if its a couple people from a spread of teams, awesome as well.
just make sure you get 3 internet conenctions preferably two is the absolute minimum needed, but preferably 3
you need 1 connection with no download limit but the download speed isn't important it is only usef for when you download games / movies this can be adsl or adsl 2 this helps to not slow the other connections
then you need 2 cable connections so that people can all be gaming at the same time
Hope it all goes well

How many siblings do you have?
It's practically a suburban fortress :|
2 older sisters, 1 older brother and 3 younger brothers, both parents and we use to also have my grandmother and a couple exchange students living with us at a time.
lol as little kids we would play games with it beeing our fortress :P
When Ali approached me privately about this, my response was like, "If 90% of the Nv guys weren't at uni interstate, I'd pay for them to all live there" 'cos **** it looks like an amazing opportunity.

Just a reminder to every one u dont need to be a full time gamer to stay here. Im both studying and working atm and still plan to be heavily involved with the gaming, as long as u can support ur self and keep up with the rent, what ever we end up deciding to charge, then every thing should be awesome

I'm curious, what is street parking like around the area. I don't plan on moving out yet but I am betting some of the people who have cars would be interested in how 10 people each with their own car would manage to park.

Yeah we were talking about this in the chat tis morning, There isn't enough parking for every one to have a car. However on the other side of the road is a train track (from the train station that is a 1 min walk away) so that is all public parking along that side of the road, so between the 2 spots in garage, 2/3 in front of our house and 2/3 on the other side of the road we should be fine
early estimates are around 130 a week for the single rooms, though will change depending on how many ppl are allowed to stay by council regulations, and once we get the final cost of internets and utilities.
basically as long as we can get my parents around 1000 pw they are fine to let us do this
Wow friggin amazing house! Now just need Dot to transfer to a Uni in Brisbane and can w00t all the way up there! We currently pay similar rent for a piece of crap house that's falling apart .
Best of luck with the project!
Even if you don't get serious sc2 players in, having a house full of gamers is always fun! And with what you're asking on this place I can see it filling up really fast!
I am very interested in this as i am looking to take a year off school next year. but someone will have to help me find a gaming visa -_- or whatever... pm
Ali, if you hire me as the house cook I think that could work. im a chef atm in canberra.

for the most part yes, every thing that you see in the photos are still here, thinks like desk and all that when it comes to setting up the gaming room not sure yet what we are going to do with that, if its getting real desk, getting ppl to bring their own desk, or just setting up a bunch of trestle tables.
But as is every room has a bed and either a built in wardrobe, or one that we have put up, we got lounge and eating areas all set up. so as i said for the most part yes it is
Omg that's a glorious looking mansion you have there!! And the rent is so cheap!!!! Makes me want to relocate to australia and set up a sc2sea office..... And rent out my sg flat which is 50x smaller than this but can get 2k aud a month lol funny how different prices are! That's a real possibility in the future tho.
Yea as piggy said they don't all have to be pros, just casual will be nice, ure bound to get heaps of applicants so quality control a bit and fill the house up with awesome people! Gl with this, great idea
To Rossi: It is super cheap compared to Singapore!! That house would be 20k AUD minimum / month not 4kish if it was here haha. still can't believe how cheap it is omg !

Most definatly interested .. Again as ia ma bout to finsih my final year of study for my diploma i wont be able to make any garentees but most definatly interested!
Ali make it from "gauging interest" to officially taking applicants, here are the requirements etc.. and ill FrontPage it! Let's get this gaming house going just let me know when you're ready

yeah we are still long ways to go till we get to that point. but ill defs let you know when we getting all official and you can news the hell out of it >.< :P
I would seriously contemplate this if I lived in Brisbane. Such an insane opportunity if it is done correctly not only because of how cheap it is relative to the facilities.. but being able to share such an experience every day with similar minded people cray cray!
Loving the reactions from every one so far, wasn't expecting so many people to be so interested and have already had a people PMing me with their interest
Just out of curiosity is there any one whos got a Girl friend or any thing that might be intersted in moving in to the Master bed room, basically it will be priced alot more expensive then a single room, but cheaper then 2 rooms, so if ts a couple moving in then the pricing is ideal
Yeah just want to remind every one that the rent is A) a rough estimate, I will be doing my best to keep it as low as possible and if we cant get the large number of ppl staying in the house then that should be able to
and B) that its not including bits such as utility and internet yet that will rise it a fair amount I'm imagining.
My parents arnt looking to make a big profit from this, which is why the rent can stay low, we just need to get enough income from it to cover the cost of keeping the house with out them living in it them selves
if i wasn't stuck in high school i would definitely love to do this this is a freaking awesome idea! so jelly, maybe i will go to uni in brisbane if this is still up

This looks really sick and I hope you get enough people to get it rolling, looks like a sick good place to live. If only this happened in 3 years time x.x.
What do you think of people maybe coming up for say a week or two? just as like a temporary stay?
Yeah alot of people seem to be showing some interest in this idea, and it is something I had previously considered, an idea was turning the big long bedroom (that i was going to split into 2 smaller bedrooms) into a bunk room of some sort, chuck in a couple small dodgy bunk beds for when ppl want to come stay for a week or 2 of training in the house. Would most likly charge a nightly fee for those people.
A couple problems with this idea however include: Turning that room into a bunk room means thats 2 less rooms for us to be renting out each week, (or we might even split the room into 2 and rent one of the rooms then bunk up the other one)
Makes things abit more tricky with council regulations
and people would need to bring all their own equipment for the time they plan on staying here, cause we wont be able to provide computers or any thing.

hmm yeah... i would bring my own computer up anyways all i would need would be a bed and a desk =D then im all set but just keep us updated and we'll see what happens

My jaw dropped when I saw this thread, this is amazing, however financial stability in an area foreign to me would give me second thoughts. Anyone in Brissy that is looking for a rental, look no further. Wonderful deal, and best of luck!
@PiG: Screw the council! Tbh just don't tell them you need to have massive parties for any1 to care unless it's a gated comm...
yeah was very tempted to see what bits we could skip out on, but i really want to try and do every thing by the books and nice and professional so that this can A) stick around and B) don't risk the massive fines if it fails.

That's very professional of you!
In my own experience I've found most of the rich and successful people in this country break all the rules and do whatever the hell they want. But then again maybe you need rich person lawyers to do that. Either way this house makes me wet, will be a cool gamer hub I hope!
I currently live in this house, am a causal gamer, uni student who also works, also brothers with Ali, and it is a freaking awesome house. I do not drive yet I am able to get wherever I need to go because public transport is extremely accessible with trains being literally 3 houses down and across the road, you do not hear any noise despite living on the main road and near a train station, also 15 min walk from indro shopping centre, but main thing is that it is awesome living here and there is more then enough room for this if it goes though. And if it is allowed with council.
So keen for this if it actually goes though. Will actually get into SC2 more :P
how open are you towards 'drifters' I guess, I'd *maybe* be keen to have a look at this as a short term thing, defo not to live as I have other commitments, but depending on who else goes in, I would be keen to try it for a month or so~

umm unsure yet. like I said we will probs be having having people coming for a week or 2, where instead of paying rent I will figure out a nightly fee or something. But as for time frames of a month or so, I think ill have to decided that one once its up and running. hard to tell with out being able to see the space that will be left over and all that
Oh my god! That has is absolutely amazing and to think it could be used as a gaming house gives me nerd chills. I live in Brisbane so if I'm able to support myself I will definitely make the move into your proposed gaming house.
You could also possibly look towards getting sponsors to help support it if for example you have a team staying there, or if you get it up and running and demonstrate how much work you're putting in to help Australian eSports. Large companies would be CRAZY not to get behind it.

Problem with this would be that the sponsors would require some form of advertising for their money. So their logo while streaming for example. But then you will have to get permission from the player's other sponsors for this to happen. Gonna be really difficult in reality.
The only other way that I can think of to give them their exposure would be to have it independent of the people in the house. So for example, they would get exposure from a HSC-type tourney if that turned out to be viable, and maybe something like a weekly blog for the house and that kinda thing. Would be difficult to accomplish I think.

A HSC like event, as people are saying, would really promote esports in Australia.
If it got some coverage on TL as a legit tournament with some international players (with SEA players ofc, or even just SEA) that would be the coolest thing everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Yo Alpha, keep us updated on this as time progresses, I'm really interested to see how this all pans out :P
OK heres an update on plans and progress so far., plan atm is that if the house doesn't sell by the end of September then it should be all ours.
we have been doing some more budgeting and decided on a couple things, We will be getting multiple internet connections, 2 or 3. That we be getting a set amount of money for utilities each week instead of at the end of the month ( this is just the easiest way with so many people), if the utilities bill goes way over the budget we have given our selves then we will split the difference between the rest of us.
That we will all be putting in small amount of money each week to help pay for house hold supply's such as garbage bags, cleaning products, toilet paper ect. And a small amount of money each week which will go to a cleaner to help do things like sweeping, mopping, wiping benches/dusting, cleaning widows ect (not there to clean up your mess you are responsible for that).
Atm we are looking at somewhere around 170-180 per week for all those cost together.
We are looking atm at getting 8 people in the house (9 if 2 people take the upstairs bedroom) and 1 bunk room. the bunk room we are planning to get a pair of bunk beds, and this will be where people will be able to stay if they choose to come visit the gamers house for a short period of time, example an intense training week before a big tournament.
the one I'm looking most forward to is setting up the gamers room
here we will have enough table space for all the people living in the house as well as some extra for people who have come to visit and train. looking at setting up a couch and a TV where we can set up a xbox 360, and some other consoles just when you need a break from sc2.
Like to remind every one that this is just planning still and nothing in concrete but so far its looking great
I'v had a great response from people so I plan on working as hard as I can to get this up and running and then continue that hard work as manager to make sure it runs as smooth as possible, and we can really show how awesome Australia and SEA E-Sports can be >.<
I'v had a lot of people PMing me their interest, so once its finalised I will be putting a application form out for those who continue to be interested. And for those of who don't make it in, or cant come to live here just remember that there will be space to come stay and visit and have a try of the gaming house experience.
you should see the 260/wk i'm paying now for the small dickhole i'm living in
man, I live in a 2br apt for 1700/month T_T If I lived in Brisbane I could just have the master br to myself and be happy for like a third of what I'm paying now!

Well, some disappointing news for us but some good news for my parents.
About 3 days before we were set to pull the house off the market (at the end of September) the real estate agent let my parents know that he had a very interested buyer, and as of today the final contracts have been completed.
So unfortunately (and I'm really bummed about it) the Brisbane gamer's house will not be going through
Was awesome to see all the support by every one for the ideas, I got somewhere between 15-20 people already applying for it or showing serious interest, before I had even officially announced that we would be able to do it.. So if any one ever gets the chance to do something like this I suggest you jump on it.
I really hope that I will have the chance to be able to do something like this in the future and I will grab the opportunity if it ever comes.
I feel happy for my parents sake, but very disappointed for something that really coulda been amazing in Australia ESports.
