I Stole my first nickname "Hitman" from an old school game called Mech Commander (god that's embarrassing). Hitman was some minor character you picked up a couple of levels into the game. I think he wore a bandana, and at the age of 12, people who wear bandana's were cool.
A couple of years later the game Hitman was released. Which is fine... Then Hitman 2... then a ******* Hitman movie based on the game.
And suddenly people are like "Oh, Cool name. I liked that game/movie"
To which i would reply "It's not FROM that game...it's from another...different game. One that you probably haven't heard of"
Making me sound like a video game hipster.
But seriously Hitman became nearly impossible to take. I became Hitman_1234 Or _Hitman_.
In real life you have things other than your name that identify you, your face, your voice but online your name is the only part of your outward facing identity. It felt like I lost my identity a little bit...
So I abandoned "hitman" and I turned my name stealing to literature.
One of my favorite books of all time. Enders Game by Orson Scott Card. It's a little confusing explaining why but the sister of the main character uses a pseudonym to publish works, and hold debates on public forums. The name she choose was a Greek Philosopher/Statesman. Demosthenes.
Now i know Demosthenes probably isn't a super unique name but it's a slight more unique than 'Hitman'.
A couple of days ago I heard that a Ender's Game movie is in the works. And rightly or wrongly that sent a wave of panic through me.
I'm still trying to decide if I should be worried but im interested...
Has anyone ese had similar stories? Maybe you really liked the name "Player 1"?
