The OP was complaining about using scripts to macro your gear switch to a hotkey using 1 of 2 programs.
Autoit or AutoHotKey
From reading a few pages of the post, it doesn't seem like its a bannable offence for using a script since macro keys on keyboards and mice works essentially the same way.
Anyone tried using them? Primary Gear to MF gear in a flash!
TBH, I really want to test it out.
This is a really interesting thread and diserves attention.
I really dont know where I stand on the matter other than to say I do agree with the fact that Blizzard needs to make a decision one way or the other.... if they are happy with allowing macros then it should be included in the game.
If they are not happy with it, then make a ruling and start using the ban hammer.
To be honest, and correct me if I am wrong but didnt D2 (& D1) have the quick gear switch already hotkeyed to 1 and 2. So you could basically have 2 sets of gear and switch automatticly through a single key stroke. This 3rd party software may just force Blizzards hand to make a call as to whether they will introduce it again or not.
Blizzard's stance on macros for Diablo 3 is that they have to be 1:1. As in one button press does one action. I am pretty sure the gear switch macros being discussed a while ago were not allowed under this. It was in the Blizz dev AMAA on reddit a while back (I think) if you want more info.

Yes, D2 had 'w' as the weapon switch, so it would switch the two hands only, nothing else. I have no idea why they got rid it. In terms of whether it fair or not, if you can do it using functions that blizzrd give you, then its fair. If you can't, then it should be bannable. That way there is an even playing field for everyone.
Switching to MF gear as a melee is so difficult and way riskier compared to our range counterparts. We risk getting 1 shot with no option of shooting from afar. =/
1 button switching we let us change gear at the last possible second.

You can always run into range before switching gear, just like how ranged players have to run further ranged before switching gear. Sure, you lose maybe one swing or two. But it's only 'way riskier' if you foolishly maintain melee-midrange distance while switching gear.

Totally don't get what you just said. Run into range before switching gear?
That's what I DON'T want to do.
Changing to MF gear essentially means I can't DPS and risk getting 1 shotted when I go in and try to land the killing blow. Too much HP left after changing into MF gear means I definitely cannot kill it.
I pretty much cannot change into full MF gear and survive killing a mob at close range.
Ranged heroes get to switch into MF, and can still kite mobs and DPS from a distance. Melee cannot afford to do that. Even if we can (Ignore Pain, Serenity), we have a very small window of opportunity.
This game inherently favours ranged characters no matter how I see it. =/
Well, the last few days, even when i swap to MF gear before an elite/champ pack dies (im at 310%). Im getting 1 or 2 rares 50% of the time, mostly its blues... Whereas before itw as 80% of the time i'd get 2 rares, or 100% of the remaining time 1 rare and 1 blue.
Blizzard have nerfed loot drops to increase the value of items for RMAH. However, the real winners are the people who "exploited" farm spots (which blizzard should have never nerfed) and got tons of loot before they were nerfed as well as gold farmers who botted (the 100 accounts ones, not my 1 account one lol) and bought up all the items driving inflation higher on the gold AH as well as hoarding the best items for, you guessed it, the RMAH. Wow what a long run on sentence.
Back to macros. I dont think MF gear is that important anymore, considering it doesnt effect drops as much cause the blizzard d3 division have no clue what they are doing (i was going to say wankers). So the need for a macro to swap gear isnt that great.
TLDR: Blizz fucked up MF on elite/champs and doesnt do anything on bosses (5 stacks of neph works only), so macro not even needed.
EDIT: Although, it is wholly possible that my luck (RNG) has just been terrible...story of my life really.

I think this is only for movement and abilities, the idea being that you can't have a single button that you spam to play the game for you.
I think it's fine to switch gear with a macro, and honestly, I think Blizzard will build something into the game for this at some stage so that everyone can do it.
Just for everyone's information, a friend of mine from their OC offices helped me ask around on their stance towards macros (be they via 3rd party software/scripts or through programmable mice and/or keyboards) and the response has been no it is not allowed.
Whether or not they can detect and/or intend to ban people over using such macros I do not know. The risk is yours to take.
