The Australian Cyber League is pleased to announce its first ever online competition for Starcraft 2. This will reward participants with valuable season points that will qualify players for the ACL Gold Coast Nationals event. So warm up your micro and get gaming in preparation for a very important event!
DATES & TIMES
Group Stages:
- Tuesday December 13th. 8pm AEDT (Syd, Mel), 7pm AEST (Bris), 5pm (Perth).
- Wednesday December 14th. 8pm AEDT (Syd, Mel), 7pm AEST (Bris), 5pm (Perth).
REGISTRATION
Please register for this tournament via the event's landing page here
FORMAT
The competition will have open group stages to any player wishing to participate. Some players who participated in ACL Regionals will only be required to compete in the double bracket elimination. The amount of pre-seeded players, and double bracket elimination specifics will be announced later this week. Be sure to check back on this space for updated tournament details.
SEASON POINTS & SEEDING
For those that could not attend an ACL Regionals event, if you finish in a points attaining position (1st - 32nd) you will receive 150% of points. If you did attend an ACL Regionals event, you will receive 100% of points allocation.
These points will combine with your ACL Regionals points (if any) to seed your ranking at the first Nationals event on the Gold Coast. The top 16 players, by seeding points, will be invited to compete here in the Pro bracket. Please bear in mind that an Open bracket system will be in place at the Gold Coast (but again to limited numbers).
Is the pro bracket and open bracket exactly the same as MLG or does it differ in some way?
Similar concept. Anyone can rock up on the day and participate in the Open Bracket.
The top ~4 players from the Open Bracket will join the 16 "Pro Bracket" players during group stages.
Cool, cheers. Do you know how many points or about how many would be needed for top 16?
Difficult to say... all I can say at this stage is that the guys who picked up the top 3 spots in each of the regional events (mOOnGLaDe, tgun, Jimdiddy, TargA, iaguz, MaFia, techtron, Pinder, SenSei, PiG, Bielsko) are at a significant advantage right now. Essentially everyone should aim to achieve a high ranking in the Online Event if they want to squeeze through! Keep in mind that participants who missed out on a Regional event will receive a 50% bonus to their points earned in this Online event. Don't expect to see this happening too often in the future though, we're just being a little more forgiving since we didn't give you guys a lot of lead time.

Yes. Whilst you can only secure points from your best Regional performance, Online events will stack.
Keep in mind that during our next league (after the Gold Coast) i'll be revising the points & Online event format.
ACL = Australian only
APL = Anyone in the WORLD can play
JazBas, you're more than welcome to participate in the online qualifier, as we'd like to include New Zealand as much as possible, but we haven't decided how to accommodate you for the Nationals yet. This came up briefly at our meeting on Sunday night, however we didn't actually reach a conclusion.
"if" I get through the qualifiers, will I be able to get accomodation+flight, just accomodoation, just flight or none? could you let me know ? thanks
I'm not 100% certain on this but unless there's preference givin to overseas players, afaik you/your team have to pay your own flights/accomo to the event.

This begins in 2 days! EVERYONE should be signing up for this, whether you came first, second, last or didn't even compete in the Regional qualifiers. This is essentially free points!
When do we find out what night we have to play it's leaving it a bitttttt late, kind of holding off plans for this.
Also seeding into the double elim, huh?
Groups will be published tomorrow afternoon, so unless you specifically asked to play on Wednesday, everyone should be prepared to play tomorrow night... just in-case.
Also, you're in the same boat as techtron - most likely seeded directly into the Double Elimination bracket due to your placement at the Brisbane Regional event.
EDIT: Just to clarify, I would have liked to give people more notice but unfortunately there's no cut off on the registration form, so I'm keeping peoples options open as long as possible. So keep signing up people!
Ok i'd definitely prefer Wednesday night too. Even if I do get seeded into the double elim based off my offline result, i'm under the understanding that it would be better for me to participate in this to get more points to be seeded higher, correct?

I dont think you understand what 'seeded through to double elim' means.... ya dumbass....
As far as my understanding, tuesday/wednesday night is a qualifier for the double elim bracket to be played this sat/sun. However if you've got a high placing in one of the offline events already, you wont have to play tuesday/wednesday because you'll be seeded straight into sat/sun.
Whatever position you place on the sat/sun will determine how many points you get from the online qualifier... Then your points from the offline event are combined with your points from the online event to make up your total score (and for those who never attended an offline event, their total score is simply 150% of their online score), and that decides whether or not you qualify to ACL gold coast.
Actually now that ive typed it, it is actually kinda confusing, but hopefully that all makes sense and hopefully my understanding is correct, someone correct me if it isnt ;o
edit: so basically, in my understanding, me and you wont have to play tuesday or wednesday night at this stage as we most likely placed high enough in the offline quals to get seeded straight into the Ro32 double elim bracket on sat/sun.

I believe this is correct because I asked Vanzr (sorry if I spelt your name wrong) about this at LanSmash yesterday and he said pretty much that.
So this is kinda like a mini MLG played on seperate days? Who ever gets out of group stages goes into the finals brackets with the already seeded players on the weekend?

The MLG analogy is pretty horrible... but yeah the other thing you said is correct by my understanding (again stressing my understanding, should probably wait for dox or someone to come along and confirm it before you take it as 100% truth cos its somewhat confusing.)
ok this is starting to confuse me, i thought dox was talking about seeding to the finals @ GC in january. When will they be decided? Cause as far as my understanding goes I was under the assumption that top 3 at offline events would be good enough for the finals. So we get special privileges for the online tournaments for our results offline, that doesn't seem right.
I have work tomorrow night until 9pm AEST, there is no way that I can come late is there? :S
I can put you down for Wednesday, if that's more suitable?

It's pretty straight forward, it's the same way I ran the IPL Australia qualifiers.
Group Stages -> Top players from each group advance to the Double Elimination bracket.
People who have performed at the Regional Events have already shown that they're likely candidates to advance from their groups, so by seeding them directly to the Double Elimination bracket, it gives other guys a better chance to advance from their groups (and encourages them to participate).
There are two ways to accumulate points for the National Finals:
1) Attend a Regional event
2) Attend an Online event
Both of these methods stack, essentially allowing you to accumulate more points for participating in more events. The top 16 players with the most points after the Regional & Online events will be invited to the National Event at the Gold Coast on Jan 21/22.
There will also be an Open Bracket at the Gold Coast where anyone can rock up and play.
If you'd like more info on this, I'll happily explain once we've made it through the Online event.
Also keep in mind that the Gold Coast event is only the first National event of 2012. We'll also be in Sydney and Melbourne 3-4 months later, with a "National Finals" being held at the end of the year as well (location TBA).
So essentially it works like this:
2012 League 1:
BNE Regional
SYD Regional
MEL Regional
ADE Regional
Online Event
Gold Coast National Event
2012 League 2:
BNE Regional
SYD Regional
MEL Regional
ADE Regional
PTH Regional (hopefully)
Online Event (x3)
Sydney National Event
2012 League 3:
etc...
Your comment that top 3 being good enough for the finals is pretty much correct. But you will continue to accumulate points for the entirety of ACL, not just this one league. So you always want to ensure you get points any way you can.
Take a sick day / ask for work off / create a clone to work that day
Taking a sick day is kind of hard when i live at work (Long story lol) seeing as i've worked 15/16 days the last fortnightish i could probably get work off/create a clone, the only problem is that the ethernet cord runs through the doorway of the dining room to my room (I live at the pub) so old mate Kimbo, the publican and boss would get annoyed one day i'll be able to practice then play these events.....untill that day i shall sporadically ladder badly and attend minimal LANs in Adelaide when i can scrounge a weekend off lol
