I want to break my hotkey setup for more flexible army control, and have been failing to do so.
My current binds:
1 - main army, or sentries on guard at main early game
2 - HT or colossi or mommaship, or early game harassing party and poking/scouting stalkers.
3 - all warpgates, or in PvZ, mapcontrol phoenix/harassing voidrays.
4 - all nexus
5 - tech production, all stargates and robos
6 - observer/warp prism
7-8 - other observers or important mapcontrol units, like DT-s, or harassing zealot party.
To navigate around map I use double-hit on Hkey to recall a group. For example, I hit 4 twice to get to my main base nexus, and navigate with mouse scroll from there to respond to drops, order upgrades, build pylons etc.
In the beginning, I also use 1 and 2 to bind important probes (scouting, or current building probe).
I'm fine in PvP and PvZ due to low variety of units, especially in PvZ, when I don't use warpgates till like min 16. I can easily split army between 1 and 2 and have a good grip over it.
However, in PvT lategame, I have hard time controlling my stuff when army has both colossi and HT. I am now binding gateway units+colossi to 1, and HT to 2. But in combat, if I have to pull colossi back, I make mistakes like pulling whole group 1 back, or not selecting all colossi, and end up dispositioned.
I want to break my binds without breaking my fingers, and I want to free up 1-3 for army, and relocate production to 5+ for all matchups. I've tried several times in custom games, and it feels so stupidly hard. And I don't dare to do so in ladder games, because there is already enough things to do other than thinking about where did all my warpgates go.
I suggest what I did when i completely changed my hotkeys as Zerg. Queue up in custom lobbies and practice macro games against very easy computers using only your hotkey style. I picked it up quite well in a few hours.
You would probably be look at a new setup of:
1- Main Army
2- Collosi or others.
3- HT or others.
4- Warpgates (alternatively, you could change the binding of your 0 key to ~ to allow 4 to be used for your army/production structures as well!)
5- All nexus
6-tech production/all stargates and robos
7- Observer/Warp prism
8-9 anything else
I hope that actually made sense and helped out a bit
The best way I found to do this (and I did this recently) was to bang out a whole bunch of customs vs a very easy AI. You never get attacked but you can practice build order and hotkeys until you feel comfortable. It involves a lot of repetition which can turn off some people, but it's necessary.
Alternatively, search for YABOT in the custom maps and try a few popular build orders with a check list and a timer right in your face to try and optimize your new macro hotkeys
I think W selects one warpgate with a cd up, not all. I might be mistaken, but I remember there was some reason I went on to bind all warpgates, not use the blizz custom key.

And you can use your location hotkeys to view them to chronoboost.
That'll free up a hotkey for you.
Don't think that's breakable for me after 4 years in wc3
Thanks for replies. I guess grinding customs is the only way.
I want a setup something like this
1,2,3 - army
4 - all warpgates
5 - all nexus
6 - all tech production
7-8 - mapcontrol and drops
Btw, do any of you bind a building pylon at zerg's natural to quickly check on % completed, so you can cancel it? I started doing that, and it frees up a whole lot of apm to macro at main without looking at zerg natural

A large amount of alcohol can make you forget in some cases hotkeys, where you live, what danger signs mean as well as state and federal laws.
My best blackout was when I woke up from cold at 6 am in an empty townhouse of people I didn't know, sitting on a toilet and hugging my guitar. Last thing I remembered from that night was going to a pizza place at approximately ~1:30 am, already totally smashed. 2nd best was when I went snowboarding while drunk up in Alaska and fell from a 40-ft cliff at high speed, landed chest-deep into snow and broke the board that didn't belong to me.
