Possibly a bug. I've got a bug where i have to find a book for this dude, except the cave I have to get it from has an impassable wall. I can see a hole in the wall, but i can't jump up to it. And clairvoyance just says to walk into a wall. It looks like that it's one of those exit rooms, where you come out after finishing the dungeon, and you can't go back. But i had a look around outside, and I can't see any other entrances.

Level 30 something melee character, 20 something mage and 11 or so Archer.
It's repetitive after with multiple play throughs, I don't have the patience to finish one playthrough without trying each style. Currently I'm leaning towards just finishing it on the melee one, though I did the whole College quest line on the mage that I didn't on the Warrior. Alas, alas.
Google the Skyrim wiki if you hit any bugs. I got a bug in the big Markarth quest and I had to 'cheat' my way through it with the console.
Also, how is Ulfriic a really bad person? The only way I would accept a "he's a bad person" argument from him would be if his pro-Nord manifested itself as a kind of other race hating nationalism. I get a slight undertone of that but not really enough.

You only like him because of his beard.
I'm inclined to see Ulfric as the better of the two evils purely because he seems less of a dictator and more-so race-favoured.
Speaking to people in the city gives you the impression that he isn't accepting of other races as he doesn't openly support non-Nords, but he doesn't massacre them.
Nah it's more to do with what the people in the town are saying. Basically that he only protects the Nords from bandit attacks and not all the citizens of his land. Then when I walked into his court and heard the conversation about what their war plans! Both sides sound like they want to destroy my home of Whiterun!
So I feel like I've got to choose between a racist and a dictator. I just wish I could make Jarl Balgruuf the next High King!
Imperials are tough bureaucratic your-classic-roman-empire guys. They understand something about tactical warfare and don't take any bullshit. Solitude is also clean and good-looking. And face it, young female imperial countess is much more attractive than an ego-powered racist machismo whiner.

Buy a house.
As far as I am aware you have no guarantee that items will still be where you left them, unless they are in your house. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though.

I've dropped some shit in a box in the thieves guild area and its been there when i get back (i put them in the chests)

If you get a follower you can unload a lot of the heavier stuff on them, that's what I did with my housecarl.

I also did that with mine, made her my mule.

Azz had a chance at this one point in the game where he had a nexus and 6 probes. But he found a way to **** it up from there 3 times in a row - Iaguz
Seems -way- to easy to collect lots of useful items without getting enough gold to buy a house, then :/
I assumed places like the chest in my room at winterhold would probably be safe, but just wondering.
I've read many posts of guys seeing your dumped stuff still around in certain areas. In some cases I would agree, randomly dumped/dropped items still seem to stay there after a while. However I've clocked enough in game hours learn this is false, as I've lost all my dragon bones and scales in a chest, which is in the house of my dead follower. I thought they were safe seeing everything still there as I stocked at least 20 dragon bones, scales, ebony ingots and stuff. Then one fine day as I checked in, everything just disappeared.
One way like Maynarde said would be to dump everything with your follower, but if he/she dies you have to collect all the heavy loot from the body
I know we can reload and try not to have our follower die, but in certain fights versus difficult enemies we have saved the game at a point where it is almost impossible for the low levelled follower to survive. (I fought a ice troll (master difficulty) on high hrothgar while I was level 8, my lydia and I died at least 20 times before I found a way to survive it, but no way to let lydia survive)
(Followers' levels scale according to our character's level when we first meet them, but stays there. Hence a follower you met at level 10 would stay level 10 even when you're level 50, and in Skyrim most of the enemies level up as our character levels up as well)
Erasmus there is a way to buy a house without spending any gold, search youtube for it, its doesn't use a console command to cheat, but just exploits a bug in game. It involves pushing the person who sells you the house near a dresser or cupboard. Initiate the conversation to buy a house, confirm the sale, then right before the gold is deducted open the drawer and throw all your gold into it. This lets you buy something without deducting any gold.
