Just finished watching Death Note and I have to say I was pretty disappointed. The ending just felt rushed and didn't match the rest of the series in terms of characters and depth. Not sure if the anime had a different ending to the manga but still.

I think once it was clear that Light had been found out, Ryuk simply killed everyone in the building after a lengthy discussion like the one at the end. He could have then taken the death notes and with no one knowing about them any more gone back to the shinigami world after his "holiday". The last scene would just be him looking down on the human world with that usual stupid grin on his face, having a chuckle and then "accidently" dropping his notebook again.
