The laptop I play on has made it impossible to stream (only an i3 processor) using Xsplit, because the computer just overloads and crashes completely after ~30 seconds. I'm gonna give OBS a go using this guide and what kind of functionality I get. Thanks fenner!
What is the difference between the base resolution and the scale down?
Base resolution is what it captures at, so generally your monitor size - no need to change it unless you're playing SC2 in a small window or something.
Scale down is the resolution that it will reduce the initial capture to then encode and output
I tried it out, all the same settings as xsplit; my stream quality (frame drops) was worse. It was weird because everything seemed fine on my end, and as I said, the exact same as Xsplit. I started dropping the bitrate down (normally on xsplit I use 580) and took it all the way down to 400 and it was still really shonky. I guess I'll stick with Xsplit, if it ain't broke don't fix it in my case it seems.
So is OBS better than xspilt?
If so what are the benefits and disadvantages?
From my experience (assuming you get all your stream settings optimised), OBS is much less taxing on your CPU so you can get higher quality stream without taxing your CPU so much. If bandwidth is your limiting factor obviously no program can help you here, that's just the downside of living in Australia.
At this point the only advantages I see to xsplit (I have an xsplit licence) are more features in regard to using multiple scenes, more compatibility with add-ons and playing videos on-stream, and compatibility with dxtory. So it really depends what you are trying to do with your stream.
Keep in mind though that OBS is free and, being open source, there is always the possibility of it improving over time.
I would just like to say that Open Broadcaster Software is now officially in beta!
After patch 0.471, the developers of OBS declared it was officially in beta.
Also a very very very useful feature they have included is the
Settings Estimator! This helps you find out the ideal broadcast settings for streaming. http://obsproject.com/estimator
So under the recommendation of Ante, I tried out OBS few weeks ago. It worked real fine for me and I fell in love with it once i clicked start streaming.
Unfortunately, I realised that whenever I start gaming, be it sc2 or LoL or even wtever, my stream would hop between online and offline. I don't know why is it happening at all. Even when I tune down the quality of stream, it didn't help at all. I mean, I got quite the nice internet connection (well, its way better compared to my last internet provider) and I have no idea why is this happening. I even tried using the recommended settings by the estimator yet it didn't work.
Can any experienced OBS user help me out? I am stuck with xspilt at the moment T.T
