This guy describes Jace much better then I could, discussing a newer version of Jace, Jace, Memory Adept. (a common theme of Planeswalkers is multiple versions of the same character, ie, 3 versions of Chandra, 3 versions of Jace, 2 Ajani's, 2 Sarhkon Vol's, 3 Garruk's, 2 Lilliana's, 2 Elspeth's. Each planeswalker is different but you cannot have 2 of the same on the field or else Legend rule triggers).
I quit magic last year some time, but have fun you guys! =)
Main rule change is that combat damage no longer goes on the stack. You used to be able to react to combat damage, now you can't. Honestly in the new sets it isn't a huge deal, because there aren't cards that you would really want to use right before damage goes on, you can just Giant Growth your dude after blockers are declared. Basically as soon as you say "1 point to Deadly Recluse and 3 to Giant Spider" the damage is applied.
Oh and you'll need to learn about planeswalkers. (unique/legendary) Permanent cards that do all kinds of crazy things and have loyalty counters. You can use 1 ability per turn as a sorcery at the cost of loyalty counters (some abilities add counters, some take), when your planeswalker is out of loyalty counters he goes to the discard pile. Any spell that can target a player can target a planeswalker (but you must say targetting my opponent and redirecting damage to his planeswalker), and when you attack with a creature you must declare if you are attacking your opponent or the planeswalker.
Removed from the game = exiled
The board = battlefield (so instead of "as enters play" its "as enters the battlefield")
I'm keen to play as well, but I haven't played for years (since Mirrodin). I'm keen for either the draft idea or legacy as suggested, but I'll go with whatever is going. I would prefer less options because it will be easier to read up on what decks that are even viable nowadays and then go through the cards etc. Also, depending on what we will play in the end will determine how many images (.rar files) I download from the links suggested above. Going with legacy might mean downloading a TON of sets.
I happened to bump into a MtG tournament a few weeks ago and started chatting to the dude there to find out if anything changed... and yeah, damage on the stack (mog fanatic now apparently sucks) is gone amongst other things. Those planewalker dudes look confusing but are apparently really powerful.
man, i've downloaded 20 sets already... and i haven't even started tried to put something together. i hope i like the deck i'm gonna try because i have no idea if its any good!
Hey if iaguz wants to go in instead of me that's for the best I can't commit to playing that late every week lol. Cause I get up at 4 30 for work. I'm still going to download and catch up on the rules to play if u need an extra prac buddy lol but yeah weeknights that late start to get difficult sorry, cause I know the games won't end till 12, I always miss out on the good stuff due to work
Wow also ping to pull out my actual cards to find out when I last played cause I think it was well before any of these decks lol. It was about 7 years ago lol.
I still kept all my magic cards in a nice little box and haven't thrown them away. I played casually for about a year a LONG TIME ago and my prizes cards were a seira angel and shivan dragon which probably are terrible but they were the best i managed to get lol! i also bought a "pro deck" which had this really awesome "milestone?" idea of grinding out your opponents deck till he had no cards left and you win. basically had lots of red/white pacification spells and it was so fun to play
I've neve really played much legacy... only really standard/extended when I was active. It's a really big and rather complicated format with a lot of decks, and a lot of complicated combo decks which are relatively easier to play than to counter (even with the right cards to do so, there are somewhat specific things to hit with targeted discard/counters). So I don't really want to bother with a legacy format, mostly just because if Iaguz knows the format well enough to just pick a deck quickly like that, I don't think anyone has the time to learn the format well enough to beat him consistently.
As for drafting... just use ccgdecks.com and just make everyone post their game logs etc. so you can be sure they are using the decks they drafted. The attachment shows the deck id and draft id and stuff that you get from it. It also lets you export your drafted deck straight into a MWS deck file.

I believe it's better we start by one or two drafts sessions using ccg website http://ccgdecks.com/board/profile.php?mode=register . So we will learn how to use the software, try to remember/learn the rules.
Once these drafts sessions are completed, we will decide on a date/format for our tournament.
