Ok....
Who are the players? 24 pools of 6 or less? We could possibly manage that if all SC2 players in New Zealand were invited.
Where do the invites from previous competitions fit in?
Overall some more explanation would be good.
As much as I am a fan of those doing anything for the community and creating events for us to play, especially here in New Zealand I feel there are some major issues that need to be addressed with the organisation and hosting of this tournament.
As you may be aware I recently joined Team Iris (New Zealands first professional SC2 team) as part of their Media/Promotional side of things, but THE FOLLOWING VIEWS I EXPRESS ARE NOT THOSE OF IRIS AS AN ORGANISATION, NOR OF THEIR PLAYERS OR MANAGEMENT. They are my own views which I have agonized of hours to put into a diplomatic post.
All information was taken from the following sources:
First I will take time to address the structure of the tournament itself:
Tournament Structure:
Stage One: (Online)
Players will be split up into 24 pools of 6 (or less), and will compete in a Round Robin tournament.
2 players from each pool will advance to the next stage.
Players will be seeded into each pool based on their Battle.net SEA/NA ranks, keeping the pools as even as possible.
Realistically this is completely unnecessary. Twenty four groups of six is a 144 person tournament. This is a highly questionable. There is no need for two separate online qualifiers. New Zealand Cup is a great example of this, with Spartaz desperate to fill the pools and during pool play there was plenty of no shows. One online qualifier should be sufficient, with sign ups open for two weeks, then pools determined from there. An online event is much easier to run than an offline tournament and splitting it over two stages is highly unnecessary.
Stage Two: (Online)
Players will be split up into 4 pools of 6, and will compete in a Round Robin tournament.
2 players from each pool will advance to the next stage.
Once again this is totally unnecessary, take the top two from each pool from the first stage and seed them directly into a bracket using challonge. This will provide the participants for your offline event. There are plenty of people in this community who can help you do the bracket properly so those who already played in the group stage will be on opposite sides of the bracket. From here you can play out the tournament.
Stage Three:
Finalists will face off in a double elimination style tournament at our live Auckland venue.
See above. there is no need for so many groups and so much confusion. Have one online round of pool play, determine your top however many players and those are the players for your offline event.New Zealand does not have enough high level participants to warrant the format you propose.
Also:
- Seeding from the ranking on NA/SEA rewards the players who play mainly on these servers and is not an accurate representation of the top level players. Most of the GM an M players spend the majority of their time laddering on Kr and many not on SEA at all because of lag issues.
- How will the seeding be done? Will it be based off ladder points for each server, or ladder rank obtained? Will it be based off SEA or NA and will Bonus Pool accrued be taken into consideration for seeding purposes? Players need to know what the seeding outlines are so they can get onto the relevant server and ladder now to have a better chance at obtaining a good seed for the event.
- No date has been given for any of this Online Qualification process. How much notice will the players be given of when they need to be available for this event?
- During pool play will the games be best of three?
- Considering the map pool, will their be vetos? If so how many? What will the starting maps be for each round? Why is the map pool so small? What exact versions of the maps will be used? Will Antiga Shipyard feature gold bases? If one MLG/GSL Map is used, will all the maps also be MLG/GSL as to keep consistancy? Or will Blizzard be providing updated tournament issue maps for the event?
Next I will address the announcement:
FREE ENTRY
Final stage will be held live in Auckland on June 2nd
Live bands and entertainment
Prize pool TBA
Flights & Accommodation provided for finalists residing outside of Auckland
Two winners move forward in competing in Blizzard’s World Championship Series
And more!
1 - When will venue be announced will it be an R18 venue or will it be an PC cafe many underage participants are likely such as IrisPetraeus who is 15 years old and cannot be in an R18 venue, yet you plan to host live entertainment, which will not fit into a PC Cafe.
2 - Why has the prizepool not been determined, its my understanding that you have been talking to Blizzard about this for some time now and I am sure they have outlined to you what the prizepool they will be offering is.
3 - When will all this information be announced? The sign up opens in four days time and currently those entering know basically no information about the tournament except that the 1st and 2nd place winners will qualify for the SEA Blizzard event.
4 - Players outside of Auckland will be supplied with both travel and accommodation. Will players in the Auckland region be supplied with transportation to and from the venue or reimbursed for their costs? It seems unfair for those who live in the host city to bear the costs of their travel while those from outside the region to have all their costs paid for.
5 - When will all the times/dates be announced for ALL parts of this event, many participants will need to take time off work or have University exams they are preparing for during this time and need to have decent notice to apply for time off or to reorganize their schedules to accommodate for the qualifiers.
At this time I am asking you for full disclosure to the community of the details of this event. You have announced that the offline event will be held on June 2nd 2012, and sign ups for the online section are in four days. The participants are still missing vital information for this event and NEED to be informed.
I am sure you have my contact details and can contact me with any concerns about this post, I would prefer if however you responded here so that those participating can have these questions answered.
An update has been made to the same URL adding more information in red, be sure to check it out.
And don't forget that registrations will open from tomorrow!
I think it's good, potentially have to do 15 games of SC2 on one day, starting @ 7pm would be too much.
it works for some people, but for 2 fri/sat/sunday nights in a row you have to be at your computer, that is unbelievbly annoying for a lot of us. I work nights quite often and will have to take 3-4 days of work off just to play in 1 tournament TT. Also they managed to clash with xgTL ((which was announced frist) ) which means all Iris players will have to reschedule on fridays
Emails will be sent to all eligable and registered players tomorrow, be sure to check your mail!
Just incase anyone missed it, the prize pool has been announced, $2000USD!

Why would this be a problem? Petraeus won't make it to the finals..
and PLEASE tell me this is double eliminations. Single elimination for something this important and big is just plain stupid (just reminder as every NZ tourneys I've been to were single elim which is understandable but not this one.)
edit: I saw double elim just now great
@pet what you on about?

Yup British citizen; NZ resident. :/ Can't even play in the Euro qualifiers because I don't have a Euro account; I have SEA/NA due to being a NZ player. The sooner Global Play comes into action (ie, HotS release), the better; especially for players like Crimson and myself.

Was quite upset when I heard that mate
But I do acknowledge rules are rules but to be honest it isnt in the heart of eSports.
Emails will go out to all players in the next few hours with player match schedules. Hold Tight.

This is not true. Where did you find that?
Sorry it was a joke, I figured people would have known because nz has only had 4 terrans play in tournements and 2 of them aren't eligible because they don't have citizenship, so that prize scheme would be beyond rediculous. Sorry if I legitimately concerned anyone.

Nah I met him online in a clanwar for ESEA on my NA team vs Light (kawai's) team and found out he was from NZ and apparently he's "better than jazbas". Funnily enough Mafia who's also in my NA team got matched vs him and i observed the games, mafia won 2-0 but he is decent and he's GM on NA and his friend said he was smurfing on SEA and gave me his account and he was like rank 50 GM with 35-1 stats. His friend said he got the account to play in WCS new zealand specifically. Interests me to see how he will go!

wow would be cool if he is means we have more talent than i thought anyway :P
Kiw has his own TL wiki page and went to like 3 MLGs i believe! Hes definitely going to be a strong contender for this tournament, 35-1 is impressive as hell. I only wish he posted sometimes here. LOST SON OF SEA

Nice find! I told his friend about sc2sea.com because he was telling me that his manager was trying to get ahold of JazBas for a showmatch "best newzealander" but couldn't find him anywhere (we were both observing the games). Hopefully he pops up sometime soon

My ZvT is terrible... I hope he doesn't enter lol ><
He played Terran in the clanwar. According to his wiki "On the KR ladder, he was consistently ranked masters as Random." So who know's what race he'll play Haha.
As far as I know he lives in Seattle but comes back to NZ every few months he was born in NZ and he's 17 years old haha.
About a month or so ago Xeris asked me who was perceived as the best player in NZ, I told him JazBas, and he asked me to hook him up with Jaz's team manager so they could put together a showmatch for the title of best Kiwi. I dunno if anything eventuated 'cos I've been offline pretty much ever since that conversation.

EDIT: SenSei beat me to it!
Make him go beat IrisAnother first. He has no results in tournaments why would he even try to have a show match for the best player in New Zealand when he hasn't won anything lol
Even if he beat me, Another or w/e doesn't mean he can be the best lol results means everything! (Another taking down NZ cup, Auckland lans, Pet coming 2nd in those + SEASL qualifiers, me winning some tournaments etc)

Hi eSportsNZ coordinator/organiser, can I please request my match at 5PM to be moved to 6PM today? I have a family commitment that I won't be able to get out of until 6PM.
I am in pool 10 and my in game name is KFCTrinion.
Thank you

It's looking likely that if I do have a game today I would need to postpone it to tommorow due to internet issues. I would try to contact my opponent myself but for obvious reasons I can't do that.

edit:2 players from each pool will advance to the next stage.
Players will be seeded into each pool based on their Battle.net SEA/NA ladder points, keeping the pools as even as possible.

Arrange our scores so we will meet next round? Then we could have our epic bm battle.
Sorry to theJOKER for missing our games. Really sorry to have wasted your time, I thought I only had one game to play on Saturday (but it was Sunday that I only had 1 game).
If you would be kind enough, or would like to, I'm free to play the games at time of your choosing.
I'm not sure who my opponents will be yet, but for this friday and saturday I will be unavailable to play for awesome reasons. Would it be possible to move our games to Sunday or another time? I could also play early on the saturday.
The organisation for this tournament screams "bitten off more than we can chew"
My rep comment was "So true".
I was under the impression that the organisation wasnt solely run by one person. Come on guys step up please this event is for the future for New Zealand eSports and for the community. Each Member of your team really needs to take on this massive responsibility.
Here on out, please guys make that change! I know the level of organisation an event like WCS requires. I can understand. Do it for the eSports community!! Keep on top of things guys, I know you have it you (:
To whoever im playing on saturday my 21st/22nd is this saturday night has been planned for about 3 months so i would like to reschedule the time off as the match-ups arn't out im letting everyone know and I don't expect anyone would force a walkover as your all awesome dudes ^_^ hopefully match ups are released asap.... on a side note who else is gona be sleep deprived from d3 just me? :P GL HF GG
We apologise for the delays, we have announced the players moving into the next round, but had given players one more day to respond with match result issues before announcing the new match ups.
A large number of players were absent on Sunday, and a large number of games were rescheduled over the weekend before announcing the new match ups.
Stage Two Match ups will go live shortly tonight.
Players who are requesting rescheduled matches for Stage Two, your opponents will receive an email requesting the reschedule, but it is up to your opponent to approve this request.
Remember this is the largest StarCraft II Tournament in New Zealand, the rescheduling is not designed for convenience, but rather to assist with important commitments due to the timing of this event with Universities.
Thanks to all the players who attended Stage One of the WCS. Stage Two will be announced and detailed shortly (tonight).

That's cool I understand and I apolgise for saying stuff too harsh.
But just one thing, please reply to every posts and email asap and keep your eye on this thread. If we knew rescheduled matches on Sunday and etc were issues, we would've been more calm and patient but we can only do that if we know. So keep us informed day to day of what you guys are up to or the process, or at least reply to the questions!
We all appreciate your work towards this BIG tournament (biggest for NZ at least) and what we say towards you guys are only to make things better please understand that.
Hi there guys I'm sorry for the delay, we've had a little problem tech wise. We've had a few computer problems and long story short we're down one laptop ... which is naturally the one that we were currently doing the website changes through. However we've got our tech monkey on it we'll ensure it is all sorted and emails sent off by tomorrow (Thursday 17th) at 9pm by the latest.
Once again sorry guys for the inconvenience and hopefully things will all go smoothly from now on, if not either one of our representatives or I will make sure to keep you update with how it is currently unfolding.
The brackets are now up on the website found here, for each pool you're required to play your round 1 matches on Friday, round 2/3 on Saturday and round 4/5 on Sunday. Any and all updates for the brackets will be on the website and I will keep you posted here if any major changes are made.
If you have any queries/concerns, feel free to ask away here or send me an email (David.Heilbronn@gmail.com).
Regards,
David
Edit: Also the outcome of the first stage has been updated and is found here, if a more in depth account of games of the games from the last stage is required I can provide that if needed (but it is a tad long).

hey guys, i thought you had to be a NZ citizen to compete in this?
Pretty sure. Because I know Targa wasn't allowed in Australian WCS because he wasn't Aus citizen.
And also, are New Zealanders living outside of New Zealand (I think KnightLight lives in USA?) get flights and accomodation to Auckland for the lan finals? (Just curious!)
edit: Last question was just a curious question I got nothing against it! (Maybe a little jealous lol)
Last edited by NvJazBas; Thu, 17th-May-2012 at 6:40 AM.
And also, in the OP it says "Players will be seeded into each pool based on their Battle.net SEA/NA ladder points, keeping the pools as even as possible." for Stage two and it doesn't seem like so. For example, irisPetrause is ranked higher than flaunt or another yet he is not seeded and is in my group instead etc. Maybe double check on how you guys generated Stage Two please!
The brackets for the second stage are based off performance in the first stage of the tournament, unfortunately it seems there was a copy paste error and the blurb on the main page for stage two is the same as stage one. The current brackets still stand as the tournament structure, so please disregard that small blurb about being based on SEA/NZ ladder points and my apologies for any confusion caused by this mistake.
Regards,
David
Edit: As for Syk's citizenship I'll have a look into this for you Another.

This is great thanks for keeping in touch
Might want to have a look into everyone's citizenship. It would suck for one some players who miss out on Lan finals because of the non-citizenship players who weren't "suppose" to compete anyway.
And also, answer my question on NZers living outside of NZ please!
The final players for stage 2 of Blizzard NZ Nationals are XGKingJazbas, eXeOdysssey, IrisAnother, IrisFresco, IrisFlaunt, afhraitTOT, TheGoonSquad, ToRTrusty, Orangeyness, Cryo, IrisPetraeus, MichaelS, aLtstallion, AgUy, Rumpleteazer, inFiFinest, Kowi, Ngenhazelsix, TTD, cruxCabracan, SIN, RyDeR, Hydrus with FaDeMuss taking Syk’s spot due to a technicality(thank you for pointing that out Another).
This is a shame as I would have liked to ensure that all previously disqualified players would have a chance at competing for the spot that was originally Syks, but the time required to objectively nominate a new player is not doable in current timeframe and wouldn’t be fair to preparing fellow competitors. As a result FaDeMuss shall be taking Syk’s place as the second seed from pool 9.
In response to Jazbas’ question, flight costs for people outside of New Zealand will have to be reviewed on a case by case basis, and in most cases we could only subsidise the flight to the equivalent cost of a domestic airfare for the overseas finalists. We would also provide accommodation in group lodging if they were to attend.
In addition we have gone through all current citizenship papers again that we've received, but we'll make sure to double check them again in preparation for tomorrow.

Thanks so much David! Its great to have answers finally!
I've added a bit more detail to the starting post and some updates on the prize pool as well. I hope that helps.
Also for the top 8 of this qualifier tournament you will be required to show your citizenship and age via scanned passport or other verifiable information to proceed to the live event as a participant.

Has my opponent "Hydrus" gotten back to you about the reschedule for tonights match? (friday 6pm)
If not and I am in danger of a walkover from him not approving a reschedule I will most likely have my shift covered from the possibility of this.
Although I do not want to do this unless he is NOT approving my reschedule request and that i must play TONIGHT.
Please get back to if he has contact you, otherwise I am very much in the dark for my situation. Or someway i can contact him.
I only have a few hours to know this, which kinda sucks since the brackets were only released last night and I will probably have to get work off anyway since no update about reschedules has been made. Another point will be me getting work off tonight to play, and consequently i have a reschedule but have not been notified, which means im getting work off for nothing. An update within the hour would be ideal but unlikely....
I just saw OP and it says lan finals in 2nd of June??? When I asked admin he said 9th??
Please tell me its 9th...2nd of June would be horrible for all Uni students which is probably me, TheGoonSquad, and Stallion. Even 9th isn't that great but 2nd of June...?
Edit: I got confused. Admin said it was 2nd, I had a schedule conflict on 9th so I asked. Sorry.
Ps. 2nd,9th still not the best dates..why not during the semester break..?I think its around mid June~end June? Surely it can be delayed a week or two..?
Last edited by NvJazBas; Mon, 21st-May-2012 at 6:51 PM.
Yeh the 2nd of June is the current date, it was decided upon with Blizzard and is currently locked in as our date for the tournament. It unfortunately can't be changed but was the most advantageous date for uni students out of the two dates we had choice over.
I don't have the current ETA on the flights with me currently but the bracket should be updated quite soon within the next day or so as that is quite easy to do. I'll keep you updated and should have an answer for you over the next two days.
okay thanks, will be good to see bracket early so we can prepare as much as possible : )
Also, hope the bracket will be generated according to what admin said before some of our stage 2 games!
Winners of each group gets 1~4 seed (group1 gets highest seed, 2 is 2nd etc), 5th seed goes to the next highest wins out of 2nd places in group (9 wins) and if few are on same wins, higher seeding group (eg if group1s 2nd place has 8wins, group2s 2nd place has 8wins, group 3s 2nd place has 9wins, group4s 2nd place has 9wins, than 5th seeding would go to group 3, 6th to group4, 7th to group1, 8th to group 2 etc)
The tournament is double elimination in its style and the current starting setup is as follows:
Left side of winners bracket -
1st seed - xGKingJazbas vs 8th seed - SIN
4th seed - Kowi vs 5th seed - aLtStallion
Right side of winner bracket
2nd seed - IrisAnother vs 7th seed - IrisPetraeus
3rd seed - Rumpleteazer vs 6th seed - TheGoonSquad
With the winner of 1v8 playing the winner of 4v5, and with the winner of 2v7 playing 3v6. From that point onwards the winners of each go to the winners bracket final. All other contestants who lose their games in the winners bracket will be dropped to the losers bracket and will have to work their way up from there. For the smaller details of bo3/bo5/bo7 etc will come hopefully tonight or tomorrow, and I'll continue to chase up the flight details.
Regards,
David
Edit: Also I require you guys to send in all the replays of your matches for Stages 1 and 2 to David.Heilbronn@gmail.com. Thanks in advance .

Good luck boys, time see to who "Best in NZ is yo"
yeah I was contacted RE this "show match" thing as well, pretty much had the same opinion as Jaz, tournament results speak louder than ladder/ once off show matches, try actually being part of the NZ scene before boasting you're the best I say
glgl once again boys hope to meet the winners when they come to Aus for the Oceania finals

As I posted above I believe we will be getting the flight details done over the next day or so, and that will most likely be the deadline for Rumpleteazer's decision. However I am not directly involved with flights so take everything I say with respect to that with a pinch of salt.
Awesome updates, it looks like things are coming along nicely for the final event!
I can't wait to see everyone there, its going to be so so cool! Weeee stallion is coming up again!!!
Sorry for any posts made in this thread where you thought I was attacking you, sometimes frustration can be hurtful and it was only out of angst which I made those remarks!
You guys seem to have really stepped it up and I hope this event runs smoothly as it will be awesome for NZ eSports!
Yeh that was just a temporary bracket as I was at uni doing revision for a test but I thought I'd get out a quick bit of information for you guys. The real bracket will be going up very soon .
i'm keen to come and watch this where abouts its the location exactly?
The corporate box, it looks like a glass building sort of thing which has media design school written either on it or close by. It's about half a block away from the massive bungee thing on albert street. in auckland
I do believe he owes me a beer after that CH, where I predicted good ole Jaz to take that LAN
As much as I'd love to attend, last minute flights to NZ are quite expensive, on top of that I am casting Sunday night and also need to setup on Monday for xGTL :P
Just waiting on xsplit to get the cast up and running, if you are in Auckland get down here to The Corporate Box and see the guys in action! Come say hi to Flamga and I we will be here casting up a storm!
