[ITHelp] TPG + ISP's

Anyone in the Brisbane area use TPG as an ISP?

Whats your thoughts? do they route to SEA servers through US? Whats the ping like to the KR servers?

I'm currently with iinet and like them, however TPG are heaps cheaper...

had this dilemma recently, After many advice on facebook I chose to stay with iinet. Some poepl get good deal with it if close to exchange but most have complaints of bad bandwidth, d/cs etc. etc.

Hey man,
I don't use TPG personally, and I never would.

For some people they say it is really awesome but for others there are heaps of problems such as over-saturation of their DSLAM which leads to bandwith issues.

It's sort of a gamble but that is why the cost is so ridiculously cheap.

I am with Internode in Brisbane and they have amazing service albeit their plans are a bit sucky. Lucky for me I'm on an old plan so I have a pretty good deal.

tl;dr
It's a gamble but it could pay off going with tpg

I personally hated TPG, random disconnects and every time you ring they were absolutely hopeless.

TPG: Sank u for calling Tee Pee Gee this is fasdhfkolhfoeahgae

Me:

Hi fasdhfkolhfoeahgae my internet is not working at the minute

TPG: Ok we send de engineer to premise in next 5 working days

5 working days later usually bugger all will have happened and I would still be offline

Im with internode now and they are really good so far.

TPG are a budget ISP whilst iinet and internode are premium ISP's

stick with iinet if you are into gaming. besides having the option to turn interleaving on or off you pay for what you get.

Personally I've never had any issues with TPG and connections at the place where I'm at now.

However that being said, in the past 2 places that I've lived, I had disconnects like every 5 hours or so and had to reset my modem, etc etc...

Have to say that TPG is good BUT it highly depends on where you live :S

lol not sure if that helps alot :P If I were you, go for a better provider to avoid all the issues that I had.

General feedback I hear is that TPG's support lets them down (massively long wait times for service calls, even moreso than the other non-Telstra providers, horrible phone support) and they are a pain in the ass if you move or change your service in any way, however I hear mostly positive feedback about the actual service.

iiNet are MASSIVE (second biggest provider in the country from out of nowhere, bigger than optus) - I would feel confident going with them, and probably would be with them had they been on the scene when I got my connection. Also, their privacy policy is pretty awesome and they stick their neck out fighting evil censorship legislation. That makes me love them.

Internode are worth considering because they are another supporter freedom of internet, and I believe they support eSports in a big way, with some cool features like Day9.tv being unmetered.

Unfortunately iiNet recently bought internode out so it is likely to adopt their own principals

Internode is one of the best choices for a gamer I believe.
A lot of stuff relevant to gamers doesn't count to your downloads. Day9 VODs don't count, and playing on Internode hosted servers don't. (Source, CoD and all that good stuff) Plus a whole lot of free content available as well.

IMO they sound worth it

I was under the impression the Day9 thing was for iiNet, and Internode actually DOES count Day9 vods to usage.

iiNet bought out Internode anyway, I guess that deal will be moving along to us Internoders :P

Oh your right, looks like MLG is free as well for iiNet.

I have used tpg for about 6 months now.

Haven't had a single issue. No dropouts, no down time, never had to call support (so I am unaware of the support staff), not to mention have won multiple awards http://www.tpg.com.au/awards.php etc etc.

Good and consistent speeds. (currently on adsl1 and syncing at full possible speed)

Provided nobody else in my house is downloading anything (if they do, I just mac block them for a while) I never have issues .

Cheers,
Fridge.

Thanks for the input dewds, I suppose I could live with 100/100 at a slightly more expensive rate than unlimited on TPG. Considering the area I live in Brisbane I imagine the DSLAM would be getting completely smashed by TPG customers, lots of highrise apartments etc. in this area... My iinet is also pretty awesome.. I get like 20mbps pretty consistently... I don't really wanna jeopardise that lol

I used to be on TPG, its great moneywise. Its also great if you dont mind dc'ing every 2 minutes, calling customer support who says the problem will be fixed in "seven working days" and then seven days later say the same thing. Oh did I mention the constant dc's?

Stay away from TPG....far far away

EDIT: This experience brought to you buy brisbane, queensland

In my experience, the quality of your actual ADSL service is fairly consistent from ISP to ISP, and is more dependent on factors like your router, quality of internal house wiring, quality of the phoneline to the exchange, and the distance to the exchange. The ISP can't really control any of that, and 99% of speed or sync problems are caused by that.

Customer service and price are where ISPs are set apart - TPG is renowned for not having great phone support, but their reps on Whirlpool.Net are great, and their price is pretty good too.

I was with iinet for 3 years paying $90 a month for 200gb/200gb Naked DSL, and now that we've moved house we're going onto TPG's ADSL2 + Homephone Unlimited plan for $60 a month. I can live with poor phone support for unlimited downloads and a homephone for $30 a month less.

Haha, probably a bit of an exaggeration I think. But you are right - a lot of issues are caused by what you mentioned.

Doesn't change the fact, however, that TPG is reknowned for over-saturating exchanges like no tomorrow

I was with TPG all of last year. I think my connection dropped out twice over the course of the year? Speeds were decent and never had to call customer support.

Would take them again over Allegro in a heart beat. But I have no choice where I am now t.t

Can someone tell me if this is even a thing btw?

When I first moved in, I got my net connected, everything was all good. Fast speeds, low ping to SEA server(!), everything was peachy. About a week later, me and my roomate began experiencing frequent disconnects (like to the point it wasn't even worth connecting, cause you got kicked off every five minutes, then had to wait fifteen or so before it would reconnect).

We rang them, and they didn't know, engineers were looking at it, yeah yeah. A few weeks(!) went on, then I found that I couldn't even dial my connection. After calling them, apparently something about my computer causes the entire apartment building I'm in to disconnect, so they suspended my connection. And they don't know what. It still isn't fixed.

I feel like a jerk haha, but does anyone know what it could be?

Winning.
